Default Claw Hand

I am having trouble with median and ulnar nerve lesions on Becker lectures. It contradicts both FA and Kaplan. With median, Becker guy (Goodmurphy, I think) says that there is no such thing as a median claw with carpal tunnel syndrome and you get the hand of benediction with the proximal lesion + a little bit of clawing in the 1-3 digits due to hyperextension rather than lumbrical loss. He says there is no clawing with distal median lesions at the wrist (carpal tunnel) since the digital flexors are intact and there is no hyperextension at the MCP. FA says there is a median claw with distal median lesions. I do not know what to believe anymore.
With the ulnar. Everything is going smoothly until he says that there is no problem making a fist. Would not a proximal ulnar nerve lesion knock out flexor digitorum profundus to the 4-5 digits and cause inability to flex them? I can see how a more distal lesion would not cause grip problems, but what about a higher ulnar nerve damage? Is it flexor digitorum superficialis thats making a fist? I need your help, guys.
