Thumbs Up Step 1 Experience...May help some

Hey everyone....gave my step 1 last week....just thought i could give a brief summary of what u could expect in the exam...a brief one coz i really cant say how far my prep was sufficient until i get my results...this is just to help a few aspirants who are in the same position now as i used to be..!!

Total prep time was too long...Serious prep was for six months though coz i just managed to read KLN off and on for an year or so...So by the time i started my serious prep it was almost completely new..so let me post the serious part of it...

Prep time:6 months
1st serious reading of Kaplan Step 1 Lecture Notes (in fact the 2nd one) along with videos for the first time n not to forget GOLJAN RAPID REVIEW for PATHOLOGY:3months
Uworld with revision of KLN: 2months
last month: FIRST AID along with UWSA and NBME..could manage only 2 readings of first aid in a month....

UWORLD (1st time,random,timed):79%
UWSA 1 (4weeks out):730/259
NBME 11 (3weeks out):620/250
UWSA 2 (2weeks out):800/265
NBME 7 (1 week out ):610/247

So from my real test experience i learned that FIRST AID IS THE KEY..if u r in ur last month of prep don't bother going back to KLN if u find them cumbersome...trust me...EVERY LINE IN FIRST AID can b a question ...a few questions r from nbme...n i recommend u guys to do at least 11 n 12 online..

UWORLD for gods sake do it timed n random...thats the best way u learn time management...n as everyone says its a very very gud learning tool...so plzzz spend those bucks to do nbmes n uworld online ONLY...

Initially i thought i could post my experience after my results...but decided to do it earlier so that this little piece of info might help a few...

This community was a booster for me during my prep n at times when i was low on my confidence ...i definitely owe a lot to it...

even the day before i wrote the exam i could find a great thread which did serve to boost my confidence n decrease the tension which i tried to follow to the max...

finally guys STEP 1 is just a test of ur stamina till the end...u need to last till the end of 8 hours n that's the biggest challenge...the questions will be mostly similar to the ones u have been doing in uworld nbmes n directly from 1st AID...so try to chill n be cool so that u don't spoil the exam at the end like how i did...

Any questions are welcome..

First of all, thank you so much for that wonderful post. I had a question regarding test prep. I heard from someone that you should do two nbme's in a row(because each is 4 hours long so both of them together is 8 hours). Does this really help? Or is doing 1 nbme fine?

Do you think Goljan Rapid Review is essential? I've been listening to Goljan audio but I don't know if it will be enough.

goljan rapid review is a must i feel...its not just limited to pathology it gives u a gross idea of almost the whole step 1 course...its just like another 1st aid...do give a reading if possible...

well!!i found behavioural sc was much much easier than those uworld questions or nbmes...direct without confusing options..even stats were simple n direct ones ...like cal sensitivity positive predictive...as simple as that...but dont go with that attitude to b on the safe side...anatomy n neuro of course we cant guess the mris n cts bt they r mostly do able provided u know those kaplan cts in anatomy...

in one n half months probably i would go for two readings of first aid n a repeat o uworld quickly...atleast the wrong ones apart from the 4 tests i mentioned...do make sure u make a note of uworld points in ur first aid...

Default Thanks. Feel like I'm stuck in a rut.

Thanks so much for your post Sonu. Hearing how someone can get such great scores on the practice tests is always mind-blowing. I'm barely breaking 200 on my practice tests. It's really depressing. I have a 61% uworld overall, and lately am getting 54% on my practice uworld blocks, random, timed. I think I have been studying forever for this test and just set a date, in 3 weeks for the real exam. I'd love to get at least a 225. Feel like I'm stuck. I keep going through a cycle of studying hard then burning out this past year.
From what you wrote, it seems to me I should just do First Aid memorization and Uworld till the exam with NBME prac tests to gauge my score.
Well, any positive words from you will be appreciated.
Thank again amigo.

chill!!the exam is easier than we expect...keep the nbmes till the end...atleast do form 12 a week before ur exam...n as far as uworld is concerned learn as much as possible from it...it basically tests u on every concept...do it the 2nd time if possible...atleast the ones u got wrong..make notes from uworld in ur 1st aid...gud luck

a) How many times did u go through Fa and goljan respectively?

b) how many hours did u study per day?

c) did u take any long breaks( a week or more) in the six month period? and did u take a day off weekly or not?

d) lastly how were your basics when u started out?

abt biochem uworld tests basically every concept...i learnt most of biochem from uworld...it was more like a revision...micro was my strongest area...i knw its more of memorising thing..so stress more on bacteriology...pharma kaplan is the best...regarding the concepts videos were good...n the rest is memorising type..n yes uworld helps u in pharma too...

FA i read thrice overall n goljan RR once n audio once...if u r at the end of ur prep atleast listen to audio if thrs no time for RR...i worked real hard...all the six mnths REAL HARD...trust me the harder u work the more confident u become...i made sure i slept well the rest of the time was studies..had to forgo many things..initially 14 hrs a day n the last mnth 16hrs may b...bt yes i did hav a few distractions for a mnth atleast when i could not read well..n dont think its 14 hrs of concentrated study..nt at all...i take a brk almost every 20 30 mins..so chill...it depends on how comfortable u r..there wasnt any fixed brk time for me...yeah i used to browse go to a movie off n on n chat away for hours on fone...

i should say i basically strtd without any concept ..my undergrad was done with last min prep before exams..never did i hav a concept in any subject...the videos especially starting off with physio really HELPED ME..this was the 1st time in my life that i worked this hard...:sorry:

have my exam nov end. Have done kaplan noted thrice, Videos twice and still have some U-world left and half of FA. I did a mock test today (Uworld, 1) did really bad on it. Basically when I check the answers I know exactly what they r talking abt. Just that I cant relate and integrate everything in the question. So would like some suggestions regarding how to improve my mcq skills. I cant read anymore books cause I think reading kaplan thrice is enough.

u shud have completed uworld by now......i too completed it late and hence could not do it the 2nd time.......1st do uworld fully......u should hav done atleast 2 reads of first aid and uworld a minimum of once by now....so better late than never.....complete uworld fast and read every line of explanation......and every line of first aid instead of going back to KLN.....

i am a fresh graduate.graduated this year.but still please dont go back to any text books.i strongly recommend u start with physiology.the videos r simply great.thats where u get a basic concept.instead of going to text books spend that little time u can afford on revising KLN.
i will give you my order of reading.physio, pharma, goljanRR,patho KLN(unnecessary but a fast read will make u more confident),Micro,Biochem,Behavioural,Anatomy

I did Anatomy n biochem last as its purely memorisation stuff.BIOCHEM especiallyhope it helps

Dear Sonu,
Thank you so much for sharing your experience, I wish you the best result and score ever..
I just want to ask you, how did you studied Rapid Review Goljan book, was it helpful for your preparation? and what is the best way to study it along with the audio??
Thank you so much

i did rapid review over a real long time u cant do it along with audio there is a separate notes for the audio which i did while revising.i read RR for about a month though it can safely be completed in 20 days.it gives u a general idea without confining u to patho alone

Thank you Sonu for your help,
I have other questions( sorry for that:
Q1: the explanations in USMLE WORLD Q bank is taking so much time from me while I annotate the important items, what is your recommendation, how can I be fast...it is too much time consuming

Q2: How did you read the rapid review book, just quick look to blue margins along with the photo??or you read everything and all tables??

Q3:If I want to torture myself, how many questions should I totally cover with their explanations daily from any q bank I choose?

Q4o you recommend systemic study along with the q banks(like cardiovascular, respiratory..etc or discipline wise( biochem,....etc)?

Q5o you recommend UW q bank randomly timed or systemic or discipline?

Q6id you read the whole first aid or you just grapped what you felt is important from it??

Q7: Did you write your notes from q banks in a separate copybook or you just add it to first aid ?
Thank you sooooooooooo much, wish you the best luck, waiting for your kind answer, sorry for long questions, but I extremely need your help:sorry:

(4)Discipline wise
(5)Random timed
(6)Whole 1st aid atleast thrice.every line is important

Congrats on the result, and good luck for the CK and CS! Btw, what was your score?
