RBC The mean red cell volume (MCV) and thyroid status!

Why is the mean red cell volume (MCV) increased in hypo- and decreased in hyperthyroidism? Anyone knows the mechanism?

some patient with hypothyroidism have pernicious anemia because of autoimmune thyroiditis.

However, the cause of macrocytosis in other patients is NOT KNOWN.
