Arrow Failed Step 1 ...

Hey Guys,

I got my result last Wednesday and it took me a while to finally get the courage to write on here. I failed my exam with a score of 173. I do regret writing my exam since I knew I needed more time.

My NBME scores were awful -
3- 190
5- 240
7- 230
11- 290
12- 300

These are the NBME scores ... so in correlation to the Step 1 I was scoring between 155 to 180. Passing was 188. I kind of rushed my exam since I was getting burnt out but I knew what to expect as my result! It was a good experience overall and I learned from my failure.

As for now, I am not too sure what I'm looking at going ahead with this score since my chances of getting residency are bleak. I think its time for a career change but I am considering different options.

I will look into re-writing the exam after discussing with my school authorities and may be a career counselor on what to do next. If you guys have any suggestions please let me know

I would like to thank everyone from this forum for making this a delightful journey!

Don't give up! Try Kaplan, Falcon or DIT if you have not already.

I would recommend you to analize what u didn't like of your prep.

DIT suggests, to read the big books, kaplan for example, and read FA
Then do DIT... to really understand FA eat it, and know it inside out. Then Do massive amounts of Q's at least Kaplan and UW..

U are very intelligent, i read u around here, i know u can recover from this one. Good thing here is that u have a chance to get a great score.

Never give up

I m really sorry to hear that though, but u shud not lose hope.
I cudnt understand one thing, when your nbme scores were that low wat made u think u sshud go for the test.
I dont see any lack of potential in you but I think lack of proper judgment.
Pz fight.fight back with much more vigour and will.u ll see success.

I'm so so sorry.

May God bless your path and make it easy for you. I can only imagine how hard it must be, but like many others said "please don't loose HOPE"!! I can't stress this enough. It almost breaks my heart hearing you say things like "change of career". Give it at least one more shot. There are so many applicants going for it again. I think you have potential. If you do well in this and all the other tests and more, you will surely be able to shadow this. You're not the first, and for sure will not be the last.

Take a break. Follow your passion and never let go.

My prayers are with you.

I am sorry to hear you did not pass but I know how you feel. I too did not pass the first time, it was devastating but I got over it. And when I did pass (really well) it was well worth all the effort and hard work. I used my failure as a motivation to achieve my goal no matter what. Good luck to you and it will all work out for you.

Default It's still possible...

If you do well on the second attempt, you can definitely still get a residency. Get a tutor to help you understand where you're going wrong. That's what I did for Step 1.

You can do this!

m so sorry to hear that...i know its painful to fail the exam...but u shud not loose hopes....think positvve, its better to fail then to pass wid a low score like 75 or 80...so u hav a chance to work harder nd get close to a 99...
so review ur plan of action, what went wrong, nd restart wid a fresh mind, nd concentrate mor on ur weak areas and the high yield stuff..

Thumbs Up Thank you!

Thank you everyone! Seriously, THANK YOU so much for such amazing, inspiring, encouraging and uplifting messages and posts.

I know I had a lack of judgement and rushed writing my exam but there is no coming back from it. I have decided to rewrite the exam one more time!

I know it will not be easy and it wont happen in a month or two. I need to give it some serious time and study a lot and understand the material better. I know I have the knowledge and I am capable of getting through with this!

Your messages really encouraged me to get a hold of myself and start again. I have decided to take a little vacation to get my mind straight and once I'm back I will start again. I will make a plan of action, work on my weaknesses, use more resources and books to study better than what I initially did.

I am planning on working to support myself financially and volunteer at hospitals or wherever I get a chance to gain more experience. I will study a long with it. Even though its not recommended to study and work at the same time, I dont have many options since I need to be financially independent to get myself enrolled in a course like Kaplan or Falcon.

Last but not the least, I am GLAD I am a member of such a giving community! I thank you all for listening to me and giving me feedback on my situation. You guys are amazing.

What I have learnt from my recent research is that THIS IS NOT THE END. I will work at it again and try to do my best.

I'm soo happy you've decided to give it one more shot.

Your plan of action sounds great. Even if you do work, you'll be able to set some time for review.

Enjoy your vacation and know that this is not the end.

Dont be confuse, i think he means he scored 230 in NBME score, not actual usmle Score... which means 230=163 actual score.

Yeah Rulz is right... my scores for NBME that I posted are actual NBME scores not the USMLE step score. If you do the correlation then its not a pass in the actual exam.

GOOD LUCK! I'll keep you in my prayers! I hope you do good..how are your nbme scores ?

Yeah I basically studied Kaplan once and then did UW and FA multiple times but it wasnt enough. I am reassessing my study plan and going to restart fresh now! I am actually looking forward to kicking ass on the step 1 next time I take it. It really brought me down after I failed but I've recovered from it! Everything happens for a reason

m doing nbme q offline .. will do nbme 11 and 12 online at the end of my prep .. m mainly just focusing on kaplan lecture notes and videos coz they help me ... the better concepts the easier to kickassss step 1 ... so in my opinion rather than doing f.a do kaplan notes 4 to 5 times with videos atleast 2 times ... coz what i have learned after reading so many experiences that use that method which worked for u .. some of guys got 99 with just f.a and uw and i know one guy who got 228 with only uw ... so everyones story is different.... dont mindddd my prayers with u .. u willl do greatttttttttttttt ...

Default don't give up, revive your dream!

hey,
I am IMG, lived at small town. last year I also failed the step 1 once with score much much more awful than yours.. At that time, i did not know how to prep well.. i just step up for the exam. But it was so predictable, i got 147. And the moment was worse when i knew, every single failure at USMLE, it counted. I was so depressed, i barely still had a dream to continue my dream.

But now, i think i am ready for revenge, forget the past, step up forward.
Now i am more careful and better in prep.. I used many materials..UW Kaplan USMLErx, do NMBE...
My exam is at 24th this month, i hope i can nail it..

So dont give up, learn from what you've done wrong.... fix it..
You are not alone...
Ora et Labora

and Wish me luck for the exam.

Thank you JoPau777, I hope you do good on your exam! I now understand what you must have gone through when you failed the exam. Its a hard decision to make to rewrite the exam. I wish you all the best and hope that with your preparation you do really well!! Good luck!

It also helps to have them on my wall in my room right in front of me all the time! lol .. My gf was really happy to see all of your msgs as I shared them with her and she said "wow, all of these people literally WROTE ON YOUR WALL!" lol (in reference to facebook walls, you know ..)

Anyways, My current status is NOT GOOD. I am still feeling a little depressed, unmotivated and down about failing my step 1. I guess its natural but I am really down at the moment! My kaplan course starts in about a month and hopefully that will lift me up as I will be out of the house more often! Gahh .. and the winter season with less sunlight is quite depressing as well lol (seasonal affective disorder with adjustment disorder coz of a recent stressor?...MAY BE!) lol

Well, I would just like to thank everyone once again and hopefully I'll look back at this and just laugh .. I hope that time comes soon!

I am sorry to hear that you failed the exam. I think everyone already said what I wanted to say.. NEVER LOOSE HOPE and NEVER GIVE UP!
This plan that you made sounds really good. I know at times we all go through alot. If you need a break take it because you can't immediately start studying. If you need to work then go work except work at the hospitals or clinics which is related to this field so that you learn something while ur there.. Ye people say its not recommended to work while studying however sometimes you do learn alot by actually experiencing them at the hospital than just off the books. Just try not to work a month or two before the exam but until then just keep going.. when you think ur ready to take the exam take it. Don't rush it because of ur family or anyone else. Tell urself u can't make the same mistake and you can do it. We all make mistakes at times. And this is just another small mistake. But you have already realized the mistake that you made which is the biggest step towards success.
You can do it! "Hope2pass" Have that HOPE TO PASS! And you will PASS
Good luck!

Sukar! Thank you so much for your advice!

I actually didn't end up working and my parents were very supportive of my decision to rewrite the exam so I've been studying for the past 3 months including a 2 month kaplan course! I am back on track and studying and hoping to take my exam within the next 2-3 months!

Thank you for the good advice and all your work around the forums!

I'm not going to be popular for saying this, but... one of study's greatest time thiefís in the modern information era is too much time garnishing material and chatting in forums. I know it is great for asking questions and encouragement when youíre feeling down, but too much of it will destroy your study. When I see a post by someone saying ďIíve failedĒ and beside that comment I see 850+ posts, my first thought is Ďget off the forumí. Although it sounds like Hope2Pass has gotten it together, I know there are others falling prey to this. Iím speaking from experience here. When I sat the MCATs I lost my life to several MCAT forums and I found myself never achieving the grades in my practice exams that I felt I was capable of. I spent hours on the forum (under the guise of Ďstudyí) to the absolute expense of my revision. In the end I banned myself from the forum and within weeks my grades soared. Ultimately I got a very good grade and waltzed into med school. Some people have the capacity to socially visit a forum without it affecting their grades, to be the chatterers and the answerers of questions, but some of us canít. The key is to having the insight to know when you are that guy.

Sorry. I know it is crap, even a little hypocritical, to be saying this on an actual forum, but itís the truth.

This is for everyone struggling to hit that grade while procrastinating here - get off the forum . Pop back on if you absolutely need to ask a question or are feeling particularly low (ie. rarely), but read only the replies to your question, donít chat or read random interesting posts. What starts out as Ďjust a quick checkí often turns into hours. Ban yourself and focus on your study. Everyone on this forum will go their separate ways, but you will have to live with your results for the rest of your life. Come back and chat after you get your pass, but until then get out of here.

This is not intended to be an ill will or unsupportive comment, Iím not trying to destroy the forum, itís just a reality check to those out there who are just like me Ė chronic procrastinators. People like us need to take our liquor straight.

I told you this wouldnít be popularÖ

Thanks for this insightful post. I can't say which guy I am but I can definitely say that I have a weakness when it comes to internet. I recently decided to deactivate my fb and so I needed some website to visit regularly ... I chose this one coz its related to my studies! I do end up wasting time on here and call it "studying" .. I'll admit to that but at the same time I do a lot of questions and when I see something that I don't know I open up my books, research the internet and try and find an answer. It actually makes me read a lot of other stuff over n over again and helps me memorize things!

However, you're right as well! It's better to just get off the forums, focus on your studies and get the step 1 done and over with! Specially after I failed my exam last year, I needed advice and motivation and I turned to the forums. And for the past 2 weeks without having fb, I started going on here a lot! haha But, NO REGRETS, as I am getting work done and studying alongside

Hey Thank you for your encouraging words. What did you do differently? The first time I only did 60% of UWORLD so I feel that could have been a negative factor for me. THanks again

Default First take a breather, then Try again

My friend's sister is a Caribbean Med School grad and failed Step 1 the first time she took it and landed residency in Family Medicine in NYC. She finished last year and is now doing a fellowship (not sure in which field).

What do you think of taking an entire year off to just study for the exam. I'm up to take Step 1 this year and am considering getting a research job and taking my time to really learn the info since I basically crammed half the information and am barely making it through school.

Don't give up so soon. At least talk to people in the know about your options if you were to continue pursuing medicine. Do you have a problem understanding the concepts or it is just an issue of needing more time to memorize the information. If you can get through Step 1, I've heard Step 2 is sooooo much easier!

Hello everyone! I'm "new" here (well, posting but have been a member for a while, not active thogh). I know the feeling, I failed my Step1 too, that really brings you down, but as many of you had said we have to keep on going!

Default Step 1 failed

Hi.. Needless to say how sad i m right now after getting my score report which is Fail-175...

I am from india.. My step 2 cs date is confirmed.. which is 9th Oct.

Should i Continue with step 2 cs or i should repeat step 1 first?

Can anyone Help me with what should i do now??

I was interested in IM-->cardiology...

I am aware of the current competitive situation, just want to know is it still possible to get IM?

what are the only specialties i have now?? Psychy, Family med, neurology, IM??

What is the best way to overcome this failure to get into IM?
I mean besides getting a high score in repeat step 1 and then in step 2 ck.
- Observership vs Clinical Hands on to get good impression?
- research work or any publications?
- to get in IM after failed in step 1, what could be my step 1 score now?? 220? 230?

There are thousands of things/querries running in my mind right now.. so please dont freak out... I m sorry for asking about all these... but please help me get through this.

Thank You.

Thank You.
Hi,
I am really sorry to know abt ur score
Well IM has become competitive in recent yrs.....one of my seniors with 230 + didn't match into IM , so he applied into neuro next yr n matched at UAB!!!!
A failed step is a real deal breaker........ There are many people applying with stellar step scores and even they aren't sure of getting interview calls
So I would suggest that u sit down n think abt what u really want to do ....
If u r a recent graduate with a lot of money, u have contacts in us ...grt go ahead try ur luck ....ppl with failed steps do it every year n so can u ......
But if u r old ...like more than 3 yr since yog , or u Dnt have a ton of money , no contacts, then it's a tuf road ahead...
This is time for introspection and not some rash decision......
There will be ppl on this forum telling u to go for it....that there are ppl who have done it ....well ppl have also been on the moon , so does that mean u try that
Too....no.......... N there will be ppl on this forum telling u never to try after a failed step .......that it's impossible.......if man can go on the moon...then this is just usmle........the same thing....just the perspective varies......so access ur yog, financial status, family support and then u can decide on what to do next

Things u shuld know
No amount of publication, observership will cover ur step 1 failure......u will get screened even before ur application reaches their desk ...... N this will be there in many programs....be ready for it...
U need to pass all ur other steps in first attempt n step 1 with a good score in the next attempt ....another fail will kill ur application
U need contacts ....build them......they will help u pull IVs
Going from visa required to green card will be extremely beneficial.....if u can pull that
Give ur step 1 before CS
did u give nbmes before ur step 1?....when u prep this time go for the xam only when u r getting 240+on nbmes.......

Best of luck!!
Which college r u from btw?

I am from gujarat but i have done my MBBS from Pravara Medical College, Loni, Maharashtra.

Yes, before step 1 i gave nbme. i got 158,168,185, 209
same in UWS 1, 2
so i have decided to go for step 1. but now i m realizing my mistake.

And i m thinking to continue for usmle only if i ll going to marry some NRI n through that getting a green card and citizenship there after.

So, in that senario What could be my chances of getting into IM?? surely i ll give step 3 too.
So, tell me after all, should i hope for IM?
I m even considering doing Physician Assistant Course of 2 years additionally to get into IM.
I am 25 now. and ready to hard work for getting into IM. I want proper guidence not false hopes. And you gave some good advice there so i am thankfull to you.

I'm sorry, I don't understand why you're planning on doing step 3 if you have a green card.

I dont have a green card now.
But i might get one till i clear step 3 and apply for residency.

I just want to know, what are my chances of getting into IM, if i get a green card / step 3 cleared? I may have to wait for a year for residecy matching as i have failed once, but at least after that i could get into it or not?

Bottom line, i dont want to stop my career as a doctor. Preferably in IM but lastly Psychy would work too.

And in all these, what is the optimum way left for me to do so? How many years from now i should keep in mind before i get a residency..
Hope you are getting what i meant...

Thank you.
