Warning! Don't screw your only chance of Step 1

Got my step 1 score couple of days back..
Havent been able to show my face to anyone..
94/220.. DISASTER..
I am FMG who studied seriously for this exam for a whole year..
Really wanted surgery.. Dreams down the drain..

Stuff u shudnt do..
1] Dont take more than 6 months.
2] Dont review textbooks.. worst possible waste of time..

Stuff I shud have done which u shud do..

1] Book the date first & then start studying.. Give it on that day no matter what.
2] Do Uworld at least twice properly & nbme forms.. Its worth it..

Last of all remember u only get this chance once in life.. Dont screw it up like I did..

Congratulations!! I know it's not the score you were expecting, nonetheless, a good score.

Thank you very much for your helping words. In fact, I'm also one that likes to use textbooks, and my prep time is long, yet not intensive, totally spaced out. Slackin' big time, so your words have opened my eyes.

I think you can show your face...lol. . Don't worry, God is giving. Proceed with doing your best on all the other stuff involved and hopefully you'll make it into surgery. I personally heard a story of a friend of a friend that failed TWICE and got into surgery. I was surprised myself, but I guess she had other stuff to back her up, and so can you.

How was your prep like? What were NBME's predicting for you. Please provide info on your prepping experience. TY.

My nbme s n uworld predicted it around 240s..
I swear my exam wz tuff..
I got an asterix in immuno, renals, pulmo, repro..

Lost big time in cardio.. My most strongest prep..
This exam is kinda crazy.. The stuff I did in last 2 months didnt help me at all..

My biggest mistake is that I ended up going thru kaplan n my notes more times than required..
And in the end when I decided enuf is enuf to go n give the exam I ended up not completing uworld the second time..
Well wats done is done.. Need to think of wat to do next..
All the best to u..

Default Did you?

Did you take any NBMEs before the actual test? If you did, how was the score?

I don't think thats an all that bad score, though it isn't great either. According to NRMP's charting outcomes for 2011 mean for Step 1 score was 227 for FMG who matched; and most of them scored between 211 to 230. Which sets you right in the middle of the lower half.

I advice you to do some research on the matter and weight your options. There are a lot of things that you can do to improve your application. So don''t bail out on your dream of becoming a surgeon.

Congratulations! You scored in the 90s, which is a big thing! I know you're sad you didn't get a higher score that you wanted but you gotta look at the bright side here - you're in the 90s regardless!! And that counts for a lot!

And also, thank you for passing on advice to us who haven't given the steps yet. I'm planning to give mine in July next year, God-willing, so I need all the advice I can get.

A question: You said we shouldn't spend a lot of time reviewing Kaplan/notes. I take it that means I shouldn't *read* them too many times, rather spend more time practicing questions in Qbank, UWorld and NBME? Is that correct? I'm asking 'cause that's my preferred way of studying too, rather than just reading my notes. I've seen it's easier to learn things when you solve problems than passive (or attempted 'active') reading!

I could punch you right now!

congratulations. It is a great score, 90ties.
I know some dudes who scored in 80ties and got into surgery in NY.

Just shut the books some day and get some clinical exposure, meet ppl and u'll be golden

again, congratulations on your first accomplishment.

If you are putting yourself down this much, you are making yourself a sitting duck for ridicule by residency directors and others. I think your score is awesome!!! If you don't have confidence in yourself, how is anyone else going to have confidence IN you? I got 221/94 and I am very proud of it....I gave it my best, and under the conditions I did my very best. Repeatedly on this forum, I see people letting others judge if they will or not get into residency. Honestly, unless someone is a pro at this process, I cannot imagine how any one predict what ticks the residency director on or off. There is no set formula. I have family members with 82's-85's getting into Internal Med/Surgery/Neurology....mostly all FMG's. Not everyone can or will get a 99. The fact that you got in the 90's is really great. If this is what you really want to do, you will push forward no matter what and come back to face Step 2 with a vengeance and kill it. Good luck to you and honestly cheer up you did great!

I agree with fsh08.
Your score is good.
Keep on working hard.
By the way that of setting date before exam it varies depending on the person.
I did my date once I started doing good on NBMES, not before.

Default ...and you didn't screw it!

94/220....WELLDONE!
You are still in the race. Nothing's down the drain. You can still go for surgery.
Now concentrate in your step2 and if you can improve on this score then, you will be set. Just get some USCE in surgery and try to make contacts, you will get it. Don't give up now, this is just the start!

Well, my rationale for saying that is that its human nature to put things off..
And I am a big time expert at that..
Unless u have a set goal u dont tend to get absolutely serious abt the exam..
Once u have a set date u can plan things out & no matter what u wud want to finish ur part each day.. If ur plans are realistic of course..
& most importantly all my frnds who set a date abt 1 month after started studying knew their pace & were able to go ahead with their plans perfectly even if here n ther they did miss a few days overall they were able to cover whatever they wanted to..

Ure absolutely right.. My way of studying is absolutely opposite..
I tend to keep going back to my notes & reviewing them..
Its a gr8 way too to annotate ur uworld special points along with every topic in kaplan & goljan & read them.. But due to sheer volume even though u remember the stuff u feel like u dont.. so u tend to go thru them many times..

I do feel that getting a gr8 score in usmle doesnt absolutely define how well u have understood the topic or how gr8 a doc ure gonna be..
I know I am gonna get a lot of criticism from everyone & Usmle s r still the best & one of the most toughest basic science exams in the world..
But I know of ppl who r absolutely good in subject but do cave in to this exam..
Its amazing actually.. But giving a mcq exam is an art in itself..
some ppl master it others dont..

So to summarise remember that this exam is more than just understanding the concepts involved.. It involves applying those concepts in a mcq format which is an entirely different game altogether.. For that u also have to get in the groove of solving a lot of mcqs which of course comes by doing a lot of relevant questions.. U world shud suffice..

Thank you so much for the insight and the advice!! =) I see your point about the mcq exam being a challenge and something to *consciously* prepare for, especially the kind of varied questions that are set in step 1, with charts, graphs etc.

Thank you for your help! And all the best!
