Is memorizing FAB classification needed for usmle step 1

I personally didn't memorize it. But I can assure you that there's nooo guarantee to what might be on the exam. Specially that there are trial questions on each exam!

For step 1 purposes all you need to remember (High Yield) is that:
M2: Auer rods and is MC type
M3: Commonly presents with DIC and is treated with Vitamin A
M5: is Monocytic and presents with gum infiltration
M7: Increased incidence in Down and children <3 yo

In case you think you can spend 2 minutes to memorize them, here's a nice mnemonic:
