Unhappy low USMLE step 1 score, non-US IMG..Am i totally screwed??

hi.

Im an norwegian IMG who wants to to residency in the US, but unfortunately I did not get a good score on step 1, only 81/198..soo upset about this

I want to to IM, or even FM if that is all that I can get..
I have plenty of clinical experience from hospitals in norway, and will be working as a doctor in norway next summer before i start rotations in US/canada.

Is it any hope for me at all??

Any thoughts, experiences with low scores and matching would be greatly appreciated.

didn't really do too many selfassessments..
Only one NBME, think it was nr 11.. just passed that one,but I took it quite some time before my actual exam.

My boyfriend and I are thinking about couples matching, could this possibly increase my chances?

My brother scored something similar in his Step 1, and now he's a Psychiatry resident in the US.

Some general pointers:
  1. Don't aim to excessively hard-to-get programs.
Get some clinical experience in the US.
Get letters of recommendations from US doctors.
Do better in your Step 2 CK.

Also, don't forget some residencies are harder to get into than others. For instance, Psychiatry requires grades much lower than Plastic Surgery.

Im planning to get clinical experience and letters next summer/fall..
i know that e.g FM, IM in less popular area might be an option, so that is what im aiming for. hopefully my working experience as a doctor will also work to my advantage

Your experience as a doctor in Norway is good. If you can get good US Clinical Experience then that will be a big boost for your application.
Now you have to get a good score on Step2. So work hard on step2 now and ace the test!
About the couples match, sometimes its helpful for the partner who got lower scores because if the other partner gets called for an interview, there is a chance that you could be called as well.
So you should never give up and try your best! Goodluck
