Default IMG What to do

Hello,
I am an IMG from the Caribbean (UWI Mona Graduate). Let me just say that you guys inspire me, I may never meet any of you but when I needed advice or to just read about the people who got into the system, this was where I read many posts.
My preparation started Mid August last year for Step 1. I studied hard, wrote my exam in March.... Got my result yesterday... Got 231. Very disappointed.
I want to do Spinal surgery which can be approached two ways. Through Ortho or Neurosurgery. Problem is that those two do not accept much IMGs if any at all. So was going to try for General Surgery and possibly transfer? (in a perfect world). However 231 based on what I've read is not going to cut it even for General Surgery.
Really considering just throwing in the towel and starting something else. I have read about the research option etc. But that is simply giving your time (and youth) to something that may just be overlooked by a Program Director. I would really like to hear of a living example... Something I could model my approach after. Because I am very close to calling it quits.... I am not a quitter, but putting in time and effort behind something that may never prove fruitful is my biggest fear.
Any advice will be appreciaed

I had a friend that got 204 in S1 from SGU who completed a family practice residency and then did a urology residency at the same institute after getting to know the urology PD and doing lots of urology research during his FP residency.

So there is always a way if you are determined to be in a particular field (maybe exceptions to some of the super elite ala derm or plastics).

Don't give up.
