GIT Percentage of reabsorbed bile salts?

While studying the pharmacokinetics of a new drug, a researcher finds that serum levels of the drug are much higher than expected. The drug is eliminated from the body in bile, so enterohepatic recirculation is suspected as the cause of the elevated serum levels. What proportion of excreted bile salts are typically resabsorbed via enterohepatic recirculation?

A. 0.05
B. 0.45
C. 0.25
D. 0.95
E. 0.65

Hey thanks for bringing up this Q.

I think most of the Bile is reabsorbed in the ileum: correlate this to Crohn's disease where there is fat malabsorption due to loss of bile in stools as it is not reabsorbed in the ileum.

Smile The answer is D

About 94-95% of bile salts are reabsorbed in the small intestine, about one half of this by way of diffusion in early parts of small intestine and the remainder by an secondary active transport in the terminal ileum......!!!!
