Default guidance for USMLE journey

Hi,
I am from India graduated in 2014 and planning to apply for step 1 this june.
Initially I started preparing for indian exams and then decided to take usmle so in this confusion I have lost almost an year doing nothing but studying..and looking at the forums I got really scared as gap in the resume could turn out to be a disaster.
so i decided to join work in some hospital until i give my step 1 .
it would be of great help if any of you could tell me if its a good idea to join work and study or finish of with step 1 and then build up strong resume to cover up my break of 1 year.
And i would also be grateful if someone could tell me if its better to apply for research programs in india or in US ??

thank you for your time

Depends on you. If you think you can handle the work pressure, yet dedicate time to study, then go ahead. But USMLE is a one time thing for IMG's really.
I graduated 2015 March. Step one this Oct, and personally, I wouldn't work and study for this exam, in particular.
