Arrow Step 1 Experience

Hey guys. So I took the exam today and thought i'd share my experience with everyone before I got my mark, as well as post my mark after for people to see how NBME's correlate and stuff.

Well, to be honest the exam is tough, but VERY doable. There are many easy questions that require no more than reading a question stem and picking an answer. There are also some questions that require about a minute. Lastly, yes, there are questions where you think twice about what they are asking and have no idea. Overall: you can do it! Don't listen to people who say its impossible.

Study time: 8 months. I wasn't studying hardcore for like the first four months so i'd say about 7 months of actual studying (attended a friend’s wedding for 7 days, random days off, etc.)

Materials: FA, Pathoma, UWorld, flashcards, Kaplan videos/qbank, UsmleRx (not all of it), DIT

I started my prep with a kaplan course. The course is decent, hits the HY stuff. It's very hard to actually keep up since it’s just information after information for long hours and I didn't know much for it to be a “review” for me. After the course, I started with kaplan videos + Uworld questions + pathoma for just the subject I was doing. I would annotate UWorld only into my FA and try to read the corresponding section to the video and questions. I didn't do an NBME initially since I knew I would be at a low 200 since the UWorld questions were destroying me. I finished the videos + 50% of UWorld + 1st read of FA in about 2.5 months. I then took NBME 7 and got 226. I was aiming for 260 and I knew this was terrible so I studied hard for another 4 months. In this time, I finished UWorld once (64%) and started again, pathoma again, DIT, and the kaplan qbank. I then took NBME 11 and scored 245. Much better, but still not what I wanted to be at. I felt like I knew so much more so I decided to take another NBME 10 days later to see if the score was actually where I stood. I took NBME 12 and scored 243.

I then realized I need to change my study pattern up since this wasn’t getting me to 260. This is where I added flashcards, UWorld for a SECOND time (78%), UsmleRx (hard only qs), and started reading first aid for a second time. I took NBME 13 about a month later and BOOM 260. Got very excited and knew I should book my exam ASAP. I decided to keep reading FA, started UWorld for a THIRD time, Goljan RR (read like 200 pages and gave up; way too much info and extremely time consuming). I took NBME 15 and scored 258 one week later. Took NBME 17 another week later and scored 251 (not sure wth happened here but I missed the EASY ones and got the hard ones). Decided to take NBME 16 as well as the Free 150 back to back about 4 days before my exam to mimic the ability to sit through it. On NBME 16 I scored 254 (crashed twice in block 4 and took away about 5 minutes; didn’t even finish on time and got most of my incorrect in block 4) and scored 90% on the free 150 (129/143).

In case somebody wants to ignore all that and just see my scores (in order):

NBME 7: 226
UWSA1: 245 (didn’t mention UWSA1/2 before but yes, I did take them)
NBME 11: 245
UWSA2: 260 (most people score very high in this so it’s pretty inaccurate)
NBME 12: 243
NBME 13: 260
NBME 15: 258
NBME 17: 251
NBME 16: 254 (crashed twice and took away time)
Free 150: 90% (129/143)
UWorld 1st time: 64%, 2nd time: 78%, third time it wasn’t fully complete but 93%
NBME 1, 2, 6 also completed but not timed or anything. Just learned stuff I didn’t know.

BIGGEST TIP: Do UWorld as MANY times as you can, whether you know the answers or not. It’s not about what the right answer is, it’s about knowing why the wrong answers are wrong. Our exam writers have access to UWorld and every other review book for that matter so it would only make sense for them to change up the questions and ask about one of the wrong answers. The best study tool is by far UWorld.

Sorry for the HUGE post. I used people’s experiences to my advantage so I thought I’d post mine to help somebody else out if I can. I will post my mark when I get it! If anybody has any questions for specific subjects, feel free to ask! I may not reply for about a week…. Leaving to Cancun for a vacation in about two days!

P.S. If anybody is at about a 240+ and wants to get to 260, I can tutor you. I can make you a schedule as well as go over any concepts you have trouble with and any NBME questions you may have. I am going to cover all the weird concepts tested as well (pelvic anatomy, incontinence, P450, upper and lower anatomy, & NBME questions that helped from old forms, etc.). Leave me an inbox message for prices!

About 2 months. I would take about 2 days to go over 46 questions sometimes. All worth it in the end in my opinion.

NBME 17 I took 10 days before my exam and NBME 16 + free 150 4 days before my exam.

Yes sir! About that much. Once again, I like to read every single word in every single question whether I get it right or wrong. I learned why the other answers were wrong and WHEN they would be right. Very rarely would you get a question directly from UWorld.

The exam is very odd. Some questions are simple and some are just insane. Overall, I do think NBME17 was just slightly easier than the actual exam.. Just based on the material and question length.

first of all congratulations for such a consistent performance and all the best for your score i hope u get your 260. i have 2 questions.

1. was firstaid + UW microbiology enough to cover all questions or we have to do kaplan to ace it?

2. is firstaid anatomy (histo and gross) excluding neuroanatomy and embryology enough or going thru 300 pages of kaplan anatomy is a must?

all this keeping in mind i m also look forward to a 260+ score.

thanks alot, your post was very inspiring

Default Thank you

Did you make your own flash cards or purchase them. If you made them, were they mostly promoted from uworld? Also, for anatomy and bio stats, is first aid and uworld enough? Thanks
