Unhappy US IMG Failed and feel hopeless

I have never really tried forums before, but I just feel so depressed and lonely after failing my exam...with a really bad score I have no excuse I studied for a year and maybe that was my fault, I forgot the the things I have studied...I am a mom and my husband and I were going to some problems, he was verbally abusive and he makes me feel low, I want to try again, I am studying again. I lack focus...I feel like I have to be a super woman to pass this exam... I just want a little light, a shed of hope, and people going through the same situation as me. I did my BS in health Science and there's no job out there for me I lack the experience because I went to medschool...I feel ashamed and embarrassed to tell any of my friends so I am posting here or else I'd go nuts.... I feel nobody can understand me.....

Sorry to hear what happened to you. Try to solve mcqs and read first aid daily regardless which topic you are studying meantime form notes. Stick to one source of notes like kaplan or whatever and throw away all other distracting notes.

i can see that you are so hurt don't give up...believe me you can do it many people also have problems in their life but they decide to deal with them and solve it ..talk with your closed friends, family, people you trust and remember it's only a test so what if you failed !!!that doesn't make you a bad person or something to be ashamed of ..you just make a plan and be calm and smile and say ill make my best to ace this test and try to study from your heart and live with your means try to find a work even in Walmart so what!! ..be strong to make a change in your life ..
people here are very helpful just ask them anything and they ll help you..

Thabk you very much guys for the support... I am still studying and I went also to look for a job, I found one and I have an interview tomorrow its far from our coursr its working for shisheido. But my husband just asked me if this will be good for my career, I would only get $12/hr 30 hr/ wk work. Now I am confused, he wanted me to work and now he 's saying this. I know it will also be harder for me since I have a baby..Today I also asked even for a volunteer job at a research facility, and they don't even have a volunteer program... It will be less time for me to study if I do work, but I just don't want to feel so useless and low that I have no money...

Hi Janice,

I am understand how you must be feeling after failing your exam. I still have to start my 3rd year of medschool and I failed my step 1 in September. I am still trying to pick up the pieces! You know, you always hear people saying "oh dont worry it's just one exam, people fail exams all the time, just move on and look ahead!" ... They are right in saying that move on and look ahead because what has happened cannot be changed. But, for me, my exam was a HUGE thing going on for me in my life. It seriously made me depressed hearing that I had failed it! It wasnt "just an exam" for me, it was a lot more than that! Anyways, I do believe that everything happens for a good reason .. still trynna find the good reason for failing my test though lol ... But no matter what, do not put yourself down. I too was thinking of working and forgetting about medicine as a career but I am going to give it one more try.

You know for this exam, you really gotta give it your all! I am not sure if you can balance your studies, baby (family life) and working at the same time! When I thought about working, the only thought I got was then whats the point of rewriting my exam ? I might as well go all out one LAST time and study my ass off. So, I signed up for a kaplan course and am planning to rewrite my exam. I am hoping to finish DIT within december so I can start Kaplan from January and finish writing this exam by April hopefully. You should make a definitive plan as well, and it might be hard to stick to it but make sure you try!

Don't give up! You have a lot of support

GooD LUCK!

Thank you so much!!!! I emailed the interviewer and just made an excuse that I thought I'd be getting a commission...I was so torn, but I think you are right well I thought of it also, its just sometimes when me and mh husband fight about money whenI feel sad... I want to pass, Just like you they don't know how this has affected me, my self esteem, my future, my dream... Maybe we can help each other... I also had my exam last september and till now My motivation ran low... I am an fmg so My chances for residency becomes slim, but they said... We truly fail
If we give up already, and never trying is weakness, and I know I am strong... I grew up in life strong with all the hardships I have been through.. I may be emotionally unstable due to some childhood psychological issues I tend to burry deep down in my subconscious and still rise up to any challenges... I hate failing I hate rejection, but this is a challenge I must overcome... Great scientists never got inventions right and perfect the first try, so I guess we have to try and try..
Thank you so much for your post... By any chance where did you get the DIT, will you be able to send me the videos?

Hi Janice,

Sorry for the late reply..I agree with everything you have said and yes at this time we have to be strong and move on and look at the future and decide whats in hold. I remember this quote from somewhere and it goes something like this - "you can't change your fate but you can decide your destiny" ... so you know, just work hard and decide what you want to do ! If you ever want to talk you can send me a PM and I'd be more than happy to talk.

As for the DIT videos, it is illegal to download them but there have been a few threads where people have shared them! I am sure if you search for the DIT videos in the forums you can find something. The files are just too big to send over the internet or skype. It will take days, literally! May be you can try to google them .. I am sure you will find them. I just want to be on the safe side and don't think its a good idea to put the exact links here lol

Hope that's ok. Take care and Good luck!

hi friend
I read your story of life and felt somehow connected .I myself am a married IMG , once in a while I have the same problems with my husband.he is a good man but sometimes his words hurt me and I feel I am verbally abused by him.For a physician who used to live proudly in her country and everybody used to respect her this new situation sometimes really hurts.that's life ..I also failed step 1 and got the score 1 month ago ,it was 186/74 and at least I am happy that I did not pass with a low score and i have the second chance to apply for the exam...try to be strong ,i know how difficult is not to be able to make money and be financially dependent to somebody who sometimes makes you feel low,,to me any physician in the world has a strong personality other vise couldn't be such a successful person in life...we gonna take the exam again and prove everybody including ourselves that in any situation we are able to do our best.regards

You can get anything on the internet these days, even though its illegal. They call that piracy.

As for ur husband, show him the divorce papers.

Default Empathy but Solved it Finally

I empathize. I had failed as I underestimated this BEAR of an exam that requires two full years of practical and curricular knowledge. Although initially awry (eg too much focus on UW and Kaplan by rote memory), I find a productive personal helper that literally (for the insane-but -non negotiable of fourteen K/step i.e., one hundred per cent guaranteed) navigated me clearly through the USMLE miasma.
(PM me if you need relevant information there.). Yes now with passage I am in a "brand new realm," with many residency offers.
