Smile 220/81; Happy Thanksgiving My Special Step 1 Experience

I received my result yesterday 11/23, took my step 1 exam 10/30/2011 and had my baby boy 11/11/2011, all I have time for now is a summary, a detailed exam experience will be posted when I can squeeze some time. Here it goes....

First of all a big thanks to all the members for all lovely threads..really helpful..especially nativedoc2 and bebix!

Now about my preparation..
Time -> 4 months
Books -> See below
Qbanks -> UWorld (100% completed, average score-56%) and Kaplan (46% completed, average score 58%)

NBME 7 - 290/179 (20 days to exam)
Kaplan simulated exam - 190 (I think)
Free 150 questions - 75%/229 (5 days to exam)

Books used:
Rapid Review Pathology by Goljan and Goljan audios; read *2
BRS Physiology; read *2
Clinical Microbiology Made ridiculously simple; read *1
Langes Immunology; read *1
High Yield Pharmacology; read * 2
High Yield Neuroanatomy; read *2
Rapid Review Biochemistry by Goljan; read *1
BRS Behavioral Science; read *2 and Conrad Fischer book; read *1
High Yield Biostatistics; read *2
First Aid.....of course; read *5

I am an IMG, 7 years post graduation who has not practiced medicine since 2006. I have an MPH with CDC public health experience and interested in preventive/occupational medicine. I am married with a 5-year old son, and now 13-day old son.
This is an awesome thanksgiving for me, all I can say is that this exam is doable, people post experiences that scare others and in addition to reading the books and practicing Qbanks, confidence and stamina are just as important. If I could do the 8-hour exam at 39 weeks gestational age comfortably, anyone can! My husband and my 5-year old son were awesome in helping me through this stressful time!!! It was a lot of hard work but i'm so glad it paid off!

Feel free to ask questions !

I would say you should do the Kaplan bank, it gives you a different view. I feel the exam is more like Kaplan bank and the free 150, Uworld exposes you to a whole lot of questions which is good, IMO, I feel it makes you over-think questions! Also repeating uworld a 3rd time, is not really testing yourself as you already know the questions and answers! Even if you don't finish Kaplan qbank, try to take the simulation test! Good luck, I hope I answered your question.

b) question is: how many hours did u study per day?

June-August, I read 6-8 hours per day, took a 2- week break in August
August-Early September, 10 hours per day
All of September to early October, 16 hours per day
Last 2 weeks before exam, 12 hours per day

c) your scores improved enourmously in 20 days,,,what did u do in the last 20 that your score went from a 179 to a 220....(wow)

One problem I encountered each time I wanted to practice Uworld questions, I would have a panic attack, I was so afraid of failing the practice questions, and this always reflected in my Uworld scores which was frustrating. Of course when I took the NBME, the same thing happened and I knew this was happening because each time I took a test and reviewed the answers, I would see questions I knew their answers but failed because I was anxious. This happened so many times, I was frustrated. After I took the NBME I was crushed, I decided I had to build my confidence again- I am usually a very confident person,so this was all too weird. For 1 week after the NBME I didn't read, I started Kaplan qbank, did it in high yield mode since I didn't have time and took 5 blocks back to back each day. After every block I would count the number of questions I failed because I didn't trust my guts. My guts were right 99% of the time. These I think helped me understand the test taking strategies which is totally different from understanding the subjects and disciplines of this test! Not taking anymore NBMEs was a risk I was willing to take, I had regained my confidence and didn't want any assessment exam shattering it. I felt that after reading for 4 months and going through all the study material, I should be able to pass!
d) How many hours did u study/day?
I believe I answered this earlier
e) How were your basics when u began?
I didn't test my self when I started studying, but I started studying from the scratch because these were things I studied 10 years ago, and I had spent more time in public health since graduating

I hope I answered your questions!

Hello, meyore

Your story was awesome, Congratz for passing and having a new baby..

I wanna ask u a question. I just finished taking exam maybe 3 days ago, and i felt I've answered about 10 qs incorrectly, these were just the couple qs I still remembered. The rest of it, i forgot. I am afraid my chance in passing this exam.

How about you? did you feel the same way like i did? How was your feeling in waiting the result?

This moment is killing me, so freaked out..

Thanks

Thanks Jopau77! I must say that I remembered a few questions I answered wrongly, but for the most part I couldnt remember most of the questions after the exam. I spent most of my time catching up on lost sleep prior to my baby's arrival.
I felt occasionally that I would fail but I tried to occupy my mind with many other things- I have a busy life, so I used to have a few minutes before drifting to sleep at night to worry about the exam/results. Try to keep yourself busy, worrying will not change your scores, instead just celebrate that you have finally taken the mighty step 1, that's an achievement in my opinion!

I was 5 blocks from completing uworld when I started Kaplan qbank. I had the Kaplan qbank for about 2 weeks and had not used it. When Uworld was frustrating me, I decided to try Kaplan, also a few friends who are currently in residency programs adviced me to do Kaplan qbank. I could do only 46% of Kaplan and 1 simulation exam before my 1- month subscription ended. In addition I renewed my uworld for 15 days so I could complete it a 100% and go through wrong questions. I hope I answered your questions?
