Smile Glomerulus Step 1 experience

Hey guys! So I have read a lot in this forum and it helped me A LOT, so I am going to try to contribute with my step 1 experience.

I am a med.student currently in my fourth year and so I decided to prep step 1 in my summer break and into the semester. I started my prep in the mid of July. My 3 month period was Oct-Nov-Dec. Initially I had my exam scheduled for the 10th of Nov. but rescheduled for 1.Dec since I felt I needed more time. BEST CHOICE EVER! So if u feel like u need to postpone don't hesitate, you know where u stand and u r the only person to decide when u wanna take this Big step.

I had bought FA like in May and tried to find out which books to buy. It was quite hard for me since I knew nobody who took the exam and I was pretty much alone for all those choices. So in the end I had quite a mix:
FA (Best book ever!), HY Behavioral Science, HY Biostats, HY Embryology, HY Immunology, Lange Flash Cards Biochem&Genetics, CMMRS.

For Phsyio, Anatomy, Pharma and Patho I used the Kaplan Step 1 Lecture Notes but without videos cause I really don't like it when people explain stuff to me I know this might sound weird, but I prefer reading about it by myself in another resource than listening to somebody who talks real slow and who annoys me.

I found this forum like 2 months later and started to panic cause I realized that everybody was watching the Kaplan Videos and used Goljan and so on. But then I calmed myself down and continued with my plan!

I think this is an important point: GO WITH YOUR PLAN , you know yourself best, how quick u learn and read and what u need in order to improve. I mean we are all med students or graduates, we know how to prep exams Anyway my message here: A lot of people post about the thousand of books they used and how absolutely essential they were, but just go with what u think is best and u will succeed.

So in the end I had read all the books twice, FA three times. I did the uworld qbank twice.
First average score 68% (timed , random) and second round 90%.
Then I took UWSA-1 Two months out 234.
UWSA-2 One month out 240.
NBME 12, 10 days out : 245.

Additionally to the books, I used Webpath and flash cards, which I wrote myself through the prep. Everything that seemed annoyingly detailed or to difficult, was put on a flash card. I revised them every night before going to bed and when I was in public transport or had time. This was really good, and helped me especially for biochem and microbio.

Studying for such a long period is extremely hard and I really advice to do exercise every day! Everyday I did one hour of exercise. It was MY USMLEFREEHOUR! It was really good, cause it was like a moment of the day where u could just relax and make your brain free.

After 3 months of studying, I had like a "down". I felt isolated from my friends and was just studying. So I took the weekend off with friends and we left town. It was really good, my energy was back and I was ready to continue my work.

Then the exam date came closer. I was really stressed for the last week but I managed. My family helped me a lot. 3 days before the exam I went through the list of forgettables. On the last day of prep I just read some high yield stuff and flash cards that I could not get into my brain (like amino acids or anti-arrhythmics ) and then I went to the test center.

I took a sleeping pill on the night before the exam and slept 7 hours. It was a good choice. Then I went to the center and started my exam.I skipped the tutorial since I had done in at home. The exam was btw. Uworld and NBME, not really harder. It is really doable! Most of the stuff is in FA, but in my opinion FA alone is not enough, but again I guess it depends on how u work I think what makes the exam harder is that it is so lenghty but I did a lot of breaks and tried to relax in those breaks doing some stretching exercise, eating and drinking. After 2 hours I got a headache and I had some painkillers and took them. I was really happy about that. So take some with u, u never know!

So that's about it I really think everybody that prepares this exam should be proud of their work. Its a lot of hours of studying, being at home and alone with the material. It takes a lot of energy and self discipline, so for all the people who forget to tell themselves that their work is great and admirable I am saying it: GUYS U R DOING GREAT! Keep up the work and u will rock the exam!!

Best of luck to everyone!

If u want information that I forgot, just reply to the thread or PM me, I will try to answer as fast as possible.

One advice what was the length of the question in exam, similar to NBME?

Also what about the Ct and mri were they doable with just the stem of the question?

Lenght was similar, sometimes bit longer sometimes shorter. But then I have heard from other people that their exams had long question stems. Mine was ok. I think u need to be able to recognize the structures on the CT and MRI, in my opinion the stem of a question was not enough. Hope it helps!

Hey Zohaib! I found Webpath real good, helped me a lot for the exam. So its good that u r using it. Some people need more time than other, dont worry about that, there are 1000 ways to achieve the same goal and the most important thing is that u achieve what u want! I have put all my score with time to the exam on the post. Hope it helps u!

Hey Sana99, as mentioned above I read FA three times, except for the biochem and microbio section which I read a fourth time, since they were my weak areas. My basics were good, or lets say "fresher" than for graduates since I am in my fourth year of med. School. I studied between 6-8 hours day. Hope this helps u!

I remember that you post on my thread about the flash cards... I'm so happy that you did so well... You are a big inspiration.

I have a question... The flash cards that you used were written on paper? Or did you wrote them on the internet? Do you have a link or something???

Hey I wrote them on paper. But there are a lot of programs which u can download for free on the internet and then do it on the compute. If you have an Ipad od iphone I think they have even apps.
A friend of mine uses this: Cuecard. He thinks its good How is your prep going? All the best!

Hey I wrote the flashcards by myself. But I posted a link with a computer program. About the breaks: I think it depends on the center. I went out of the room for my stretching breaks. Maybe you have to stay on the chair. Cant help you with that. Sorry!

My exam is in April/27th... I'm about to finishing my first reading of all the topics. I'm aiming to read all 3 times. If I do not have the time, at least 2 times, but for sure 3-4 times for FA... So far I have a 63% in UW overall performance but I'm looking forward to pushing up to >70%. I was just asking about the flash cards because I wanted to use yours ha ha ha...

Well man, nice you did so well. Wish you the best for the next step...

Thanks 4 all... I'll keep in touch with you.
