Well I have never handled my stress in the best way and I'm known for asking help to motivate me in this journal.....
My fellow forum frnds here have helped me a lot in coping up....so f u have a frnd who s very close to u then share ur frustration with them...go out...party hard...and then come back and think that u can actually party this way with even more satisfaction after u pass mle....
Just like quacky mcquacky said...less is more....I know of frnds who study so hard that they cmplt a subject in a week max and I take around 20days to do that....reason??? I can't handle a lot of hrs studying...I take many breaks in bwn....and that actually helps me to conc better....of I try to rush it just cuz my frnds r doing it I end up reading passively.....so now which one sounds better???? I accepted the hard fact that I'm very slow but I'm happy now....u must put constant effort and try to check what is it that is holding u back????? Work on it search for ur weakness and mend it......
Keep trying....u r unique in ur own way nd try not overwhelming urslf with busy schedules....indulge in any kind f activity for at least 10min everyday....I do zumba and u can find interest in sumthng else
Don't let ur negative thoughts pull u down in this last moment....u have worked hard for it and nothing can stop u from achieving what u deserve
Gudluck

When you start to think this way, it's actually comforting somehow - you're preparing yourself for failure. Then, if you actually fail, it is easier to deal with the failure.
The best thing you can do is, don't let yourself think like this, a.k.a. fake it till you make it approach. It doesn't matter if you feel depressed or sad. Noone gives a ****. So go in front of the mirror and smile. Go out and get some sun exposure. (Sitting in a dark room all day is very depressing...). What I do is, I put some upbeat music on, dancing like crazy. Maybe you have some other way.
My point is, you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. Little by little you start to feel more relaxed and it'll be easier to stay on track. (If you have serious problem though, seek help. NOW!)
But, remember to: sleep right, eat right, exercise everyday and take some time off every week for other - not-study, not-work, not-school related activities.
Last, make sure that your schedule is realistic. If it's too much for you to handle, you won't be able to stick with it, which leads to: frustration, burn out and depression. Less is more, never forget that.
Good luck.
Thank you for those encouraging words. It's comforting to know that there are many people out there in the same boat as me.
I was wondering if you can tell me more about your schedule. Have you taken any nbmes?
I am trying to do 2 blocks of uworld plus FA and some DIT videos in a day but you are right I do feel like I can't fit all that in a day and then I start feeling frustrated. Its better to do less and do it well rather than burning yourself out!
Good luck to everyone!!

Right now I'm mostly going through FA, trying to review my weak subjects.
I'm doing about 7-12 UW blocks/week, depends how much time I have. That's pretty much it. I've been doing this for a while. The scores are going up (slowly, but up), so I'm happy. if you have any more questions you can pm me. We are spamming a thread that is supposed to serve a different purpose.

Hi smita,
Firstly, I really appreciate your idea of starting this thread. This is encouraging for others too.
My timeline is similar to yours. About to finish my first read of kaplans.
Are you doing kaplan qbank online or offline? If online, then do you think its advantageous over offline?

You will probably benefit more from doing it online - you will see your scores over time, you can do timed, mixed blocks, repeating only incorrect questions and so on. You can do this too with your offline version, but it's probably much harder and time consuming.

There is also Kaplan Q book. It has questions, supposedly different from the ones you'll find in the qbank. I just skimmed through that book and the questions seemed a little easier than the ones in their Qbank.

Good luck!

Thanks quacky.mcquaky for your input.
The thing is, I'm a visual learner, I hate passive reading and it takes me a lot of time. I prefer videos & questions. Aim is 250+. I've already almost completed kaplan books & videos. Just started some online RX along with FA. Will finish this by October. I'm saving UWorld for the last phase of my prep Jan-Feb, will be taking the exam in Feb or March. So for the middle phase Nov-Dec I'm really confused if I should buy online kaplan (this would be my 3rd online qbank). Money is not a problem as long as the qbank is useful. I just don't want to waste it. I'm only worried about the minutiae tested by kaplan (according to some people), that might waste my time. But if you guys say kaplan is good I'll still go for it. Another advantage I see is the simulation test provided by kaplan that I can use at the end.
I do have the kaplan Qbook btw. I find it useful to understand some things that are missing elsewhere, but obviously the question style is noway close to step 1 I guess.

I've done all questions in Kaplan Qbank. While it's true that they test some not-so-high-yield material, most of the questions are pretty good. As far as the UX goes, Kaplan falls a bit short when compared to Uworld - it is slower, over the year I had a few problems that lead me to contact the support several times. However they are pretty quick to resolve all issues, so at the end it was quite alright. I also liked the simulation.
I think two qbanks are good enough to score high. (i.e., I believe, you can reach score 250+ with just one of them. I also believe that you can do all three and score well below 250).

ok i am done with renal....pathoma fa goljan audios...also kaplan and uworld
i scored around 73-75% in both
goljan audios doesnt include anymore than that which is there in pathoma....all the concepts are there...i just gave it a try after my first read of fa and boy it tells which particular facts are high yield...kaplan ques were very easy and i was not satisfied with the score but after listening to goljan and attempting uworld it felt good...it helped me reinforce those high yield points...

i did git fa today...strtd goljan audios and vl try to finish it today...my schedulde is lagging behind but im happy that i worked out a method for doing pathology....its either now or never right
so those out there who procastinate about finishing leftovers later.....and regularly have backlogs....plz finish them first...dont think that u can do it later...i didnt annotate kaplan qbank for a block or 2 and i kept delaying that and eventually my time just got wasted.....so just think that u must finish it and oly move on with ur schedulde.....
gudluck guys....we can do it

PS- Im already feeling sleepy :P

I think as close to the exam as possible would be a good idea, so I guess few days before (sometime in the last 2 weeks).

Hey smita.. Wanted to ask you a quick question what materials and source did you find useful when you were doing pharmacology and microbiology? Were Kaplan videos enough and FA?

for pharma kaplan and fa is more than sufficient.....i just did 2sections in pharma so maybe i cant comment much

as for micro...the immuno part is gud in kaplan...both videos and notes....as well as micro is concerned i think u can altogether leave the kaplan videos and follow oly the notes or cmmrs...i personally found cmmrs to be great....kaplan was okayish but i cudnt retain much
but the oly thing that vl really help u retain micro is by solving ques...so if poss dwnlaod kaplan qbank offline version and solve t...the micro part of t s very good

Keep doing pathoma. Goljan is overkill. You need to study FA. That's like 600 pages by itself. You don't want to add 700 more. As for histo slides in UW, I don't know if there is anything you can do. Needless to say: most of the time, they give the information away in thr stem of the question - I remember clearly a few times this happened: looking at the stupid slide for two or three minutes, desperately trying to recognize something familiar, just to get back to the stem to find the freaking answer. Yes, there are some questions where you need to identify the pathology from the slide. Fortunately, there are not too many questions like this. Pathoma is therefore enough.

Uh oh...I think I don't know the differences between rotations, clerkships, internships etc. Actually not so good. I didn't get enough sleep these last couple of days, so studying has been that much harder. But hey, I'm trying.
Anyway, yeah I'm still a student.

I took one NMBE 13 and my score around 240 but it was mainly guess answers... I don't think I'm prepared yet. So I decided to read First Aid a few times before the test... Also I'm doing uworld which I realized help me a lot to answer and guess good At NBME..

Let me tell you my crazy schedule...
5-6 am trying to be awake and begin reading
8am prepare breakfast and clean
10am back to reading mid while do laundry if necessary...
13 hrs snack before lunch
14hrs prepare lunch
Keep reading until 6pm
From 6:30 to 8pm uworld at least one 44 questions and review
8:30 -9-30 gym shower and review notes for 30 minutes and finally sleep to be a up at 5am

Today I'm reading endocrine, GI and hemato at First aid...
Hopefully something might stay in my brain...

How r you doing??? How's your NMBE scores??? When r u taking your exam?
hello lillybethcervant!!! i didnt take any nbme yet as im not done with my first read of kaplan...i hope i finish it by this month...
im planning to tak ethe beast by jan 2016 (hopefully)

Default Hello Smita

Yeah my days r long and crazy... However if I don't push myself no one will so I must keep going..

First of all I'm done with medical school and two years one internship and one free social work year required by my medical school.

There help us a lot to learn and reinforce the basic material... Last year I did one complete year of clerkship at a hospital in Los Angeles so that help me learn the REAL healthcare system and most common medication...
Then the wedding came around February and moved to Georgia... My husband encourage me to take the usmle steps....

So my study preparation started around last week of June 2015 until now..
First passive reading like enjoying any good story book... But then I started looking around researching on how to apply to take the test... That's when a cold water bucket woke me up... My medical school required one NBME...
I was not aware of what NBME was until then.
So I took my NBME July 13, 2015 since I needed to send the results right away to get all my documents going.

Another issue is that my school required at least 210 at the NBME results... Otherwise no documents until achieve the minimum score.

I honestly was expecting at least 200 or just to pass since it was not easy specially the first two blocks online I had the feeling someone was rushing me... Until mid second block I was feeling better.. A lot of questions I got right don't even know how just by luck I believe. However, I cannot take a real step 1 without being ready...
As soon as I was done the computer gave me the result and I was able to check my wrong answers as well. I got happy 😍😜

It was a wrong wrong mistake since I did GOOD I started wondering around and not reading properly or spending good quality of time reviewing my uworld Qbank... So, everyone learn by mistakes...
Therefore, NOW I decided to set my goal get up early do my reading, of course do all my duties as a newly wife and don't give up on my studies.

I'm scared the exam is expensive I cannot afford to fail... My husband is paying for everything and it won't be good.. Therefore, I'm pushing myself to achieve my goals...
If I'm not in the right path I don't know but I can tell u at least I'm trying my best....

:-)

yayyyyyyy done with pharma!!!!!!! was my reaction a few hours back!!!
i was in such a hurry to finish this subject that i dont knw what i did but i remember nothing.... nothing means nothing!!! i was listening to it in 1.5x speed which was decent but i was literlly stuffing the info into my brain even though i was nt concentrating just like stuffing abt 2 burgers (im a veggie so no ham :P...anyway this is not the point here) into my mouth even though im not hungry!!!!!
i was solving qbank and literally wasted 20min on each ques

lol anyways the damage is done and il try and review now from qbank and fa and refer kaplan when and where required...

so tip of the stEps guys....DO NOT RUSH WITH ANYTHING!!! anything at all....postpone ur xam if u have to but this is only chance u can read decently and when u r not interested at all....go and play with a monkey f u have to...but just dont rush with the subject
ok back to reviewing my questions.... gudluck guys....take this advice home otherwise.....well ur nbmes vl tell you....dont say that i didnt warn u then!! :P :P

Hey mcquaky, good to hear that you're done with your exam. Good luck for the result!
By the way, smita & mcquaky, what posts on the forum are you guys talking about, that forced you guys to stay away from it. Is it the ones that say preparing for x no. of years and still failed NBME? Or is it the ones that say they all got scores in 250s, 260s, 270s?? Or something else?
I just want to sort of get an idea what stuff to believe and what to ignore.

smita: do what you think is best for you including taking time to learn important subjects such as pharm. It's one of those things you have to repeat everyday or you'll forget simple things. I understand anxiety does play a role in everyone's studying so it's normal.

So far i think you're doing an exceptional job. I have been checking on the forums in my spare time (which is not much tbh).

mcquacky: congratulations on writing the step. i'm sure you aced the step & for now just enjoy the relaxation of no stress. Perhaps go on a vacation or just spend time with friends and family whatever you find comforting.

san.usmle: I can't speak for smita or mcquacky but the posts i ignored were the pessimistic posts or ones where you end up overwhelming yourself with resources and go into a panic frame of mind. Keep it simple. I read the ones from exam experiences with good scores to get a rough idea how i could adapt my study plan. Perhaps wait for smita & mcquacky to give their opinions as well.

I wish you all a high score on your step. You need to believe in yourself more than anyone else as that confidence will help you not only in this step but ones to come.

Hi...This is my first post here but let me welcome you to endocrine chapter with this HY concept to finish off your 1st read in your step 1 journey.

This concept is EXTREME SUPER HY for your clinical practice and any of USMLE exam. This is about DKA...

In patients with DKA, initially serum K+ levels are higher even though Total body K+ falls but as the defect in DKA gets corrected using insulin and IV fluids, serum K+ levels begin to fall. What is the concept behind initial high Serum K+ levels and later Low Serum K+ levels?

Hope you like this concept as a grand welcome to endocrines ! By the way I have just started my step1 journey with high targets and this is my first post and better place to begin my journey!

Even i hate biostats:-) Best source for Bio stats is kaplan and then practice lot of qs...try to understand definitions in and out and apply them in formulas. Now a days, boards are also focusing on testing our concepts testing our interpretation skills for a given data.

All the best guys !

hello dr270plus.....the concept is that administration of insulin drives K+ ions into the cells....hence k+ must also be administered with regular monitorings ... thank u for the post

Yes Insulin kicks potassium back in to cell, which results in fall in normal range serum potassium...

Try to complete steps as early as possible....can u tell me your assesment or uw step 1 scores, so far......applying or not by thus sept entirely depends on how you see the problem.....spread short term & long term targets for september and proceed accordingly....it is doable......gl

Definitely prepare for everything and take decision.....In india, single exam will settle things but in US multiple exams with good score and observership with US LOR helps but still no guarantee...need lot of patience but worth if you acheive it.......now a days step 3 is good for application but not must if you can get 250+ in both steps

Biostats is confusing at first, but once you learn it, you will easily get all the biostats qs right. Know everything that is written in FA cold. If you need more detailed explanations, UW biostats is pretty decent. But it's not essential. Use qbanks to test yourself. If you get a question wrong, learn from it. Make sure you understand the concept they are testing. You'll be fine.
As far as test is concerned, FA is more than enough. (at least for me it was).

hi kalyan
i cudnt agree more with dr270plus...

there i sreally no fixed time or schedule for the steps....at times we dont feel ready or may not get the desired score in nbmes and so ppl tend u postpone the exams.....hurrying is not the right thing to do.....if u can finish it by next year then well and good....otherwise do not try to rush things and also try to do observerships along with ur steps....it doesnt matter if u take time but the scores are very important and decide ur fate......take the best decision all the best

Yep smita....

Hope everything goes fine in our lives.....minimum target is to learn some new concepts as a routine in a day apart from schedule...

We are all mature enough to take decisions, but let me tell you something....

It is you who need to decide about your future and your decision should reflect your short term and long term professional and personal goals but you can always take suggestions from your parents and friends....

Estimate prons and cons and jump in to the feild...but once you enter just stick to it..good luck

Short term in the sense some exam in next few months
Long term means Completing exams and applying for Match and getting in to residency

Ok if you have any further qs, pls post separately as this thread belongs to someone's journal and i don't want to mix this with other topic...thanks

Avoid kaplan 2nd reading except Physiology but you can always refer kaplan lecture notes while doing qs or checking concepts.

My best ever advice, you will realize after exam is Stick with Doing Qs from Q Banks along with FA.....If you want high score stick with solving qs/reading explanations and reading FA and Referring ( Not entire reading) Kaplan notes. I belive q bank explanations teach you more and can retain more....

Hi Smita ! :-) I'm from Chennai, India. I recently came across your journal. I have been trying to form a proper study schedule but I'm one of those chronic procrastinators. Your journal really motivated me to start afresh. Thank you.

thank u mjaid for ur post ....it makes me happy when people post such stuff

so.....nov 11th 2015...
my last post was some weeks back i guess!!!
well i had clg annual celebrations and ws busy participating and enjoying as this is going to be my lst year in clg.....
i didnt do much but yea revised micro and behavioural....did uw biostats review...nd solved kaplan qbank for the same...

so i entered the next phase of my prep!!! i have started UWORLD!!!!
i did 2 blocks simultaneously and was expecting really really low scores....this is becuz i didnt exactly revise things properly and wa really tensed.....got a 57 and a 52%........low i knw but trust me guys i was expecting even lower .....im not concerned about my scores as of now and will start assessing it maybe after 25blocks....
so started reviewing my questions.....started making a uworld journal...(most importantly i hope i stick to it cuz i have this bad habit of leaving stuff midway)....reviewing is taking a lot of time but i guess initially it will take time and things will speed up later....
so gotta get back to explanations!!! all the best guys
take care

Hi everyone....I don't know if anyone remb me...its been a long time..
I had many breaks in bwn my prep due to personal reasons
I started uw in the end of Nov and scored 54-64% random timed unused....I continued solving them but during Dec and Jan I got distracted compeltly and my prep came to a halt....I decided to take nbme 15 offline just to see where I stand and I gt 152/200.... Its nt gud but then I had solved oly 48% of uw and so I thot its a gud start......I strtd preparing hard since Jan 17th....studying system wise now cuz I feel I compltly forgot evrythng....started dng pathoma dit .and system blocks in uw...scoring 68% literally in every block....bad again but still I kept gng....nw I gave nbme 11 and again I'm stuck with the same score.....I just finished my 3rd block and compared the ans key( apparently my frnd has done well in it with few mistakes so t was a reliable key) and made 37 mistakes till now....I don't know where this s gng and I stopped solving my 4th block....I can hardly read those questions on my screen....I want to give this xam by march end
Can anybody help me? Anyone who went thru the same?
My eligibility slot is till April but I dnt want to wait till april
