Hey, I would recommend Kaplan Genetics. It's a pretty short and straightforward section. The professor really explains it well. Give it a shot. Good luck!

Hi Smita,

I think this journal is a great idea. I'm sure it is not only helpful towards to yourself but to many others who need that feedback.

As for people you find bothersome. First off, I have to be honest and say I don't understand the language you are using to refer to them. Perhaps because I am not familiar with that language. We all come from different parts of the world here so I hope you understand. I only speak english, some french and a little bit of spanish.

However, the gist of it is that they are bothering you instead of motivating you to excel in your step 1 studies. I would recommend either going to a library to study or if you have no other choice, just surround yourself with positive people. People that will help you attain the high marks you want. You will face people in life that have their own agenda. Either because they are unhappy with their progress or life in general or just rather see you fail than them succeed. Whatever the reason is, just do your best. I believe in you. Best not to dedicate your energy to negative people. studying for step is stressful enough. Hope that sheds some light on the issues you face. Keep up the great work!!!

The method I used to study 8-10 pages of First Aid or more was through Uworld (subject-wise) questions and also Usmle Rx videos. A study partner may also be helpful to you. People may put in 8-10 hours. out of those hours, it is very difficult to stay focused. Best not to compare yourself to others. We are all born with different qualities, traits and personalities which make us individuals. Just stay focused on your goals. For example say one day you can only cover 8 pages. You will know those 8 pages very well where as someone else may just briefly cover it and barely retain anything. Just keep going at your own pace.

please ask for any advice you need. I may not be on here often but I will check at random times.

good luck!

this is a great way of motivating yourself and others at the same time. really liked your thread. I've finished kaplan lectures and vdos, did U world questions. I feel like i don't remember anything I want to revise everything and take exam on oct-nov-dec. I am very lost. I need to know how to revise all subjects very quickly and effectively.
Any suggestions will save my life.
Smita your posts really inspired me.

I hope you ace your exam...Best of luck!

Default DrDee....

hey calm down!!! u r doing good nd also u have LOADS of time left.....dont book ur date nw...first do an nbme assesment and see wer u stand....if u score low and u feel u r not good with the concepts then give a 2nd read of kaplan by this month....next month do uworld again....annotate everythning in fa or in any other book...cram those concepts....i have heard dit is a good way to read fa so allot another 10days for that....again do an nbme...meanwhile keep reading pathoma(or goljan ur choice) ...it s all abt fa and uw....give ur xam in dec if u r not feeling confident....im sure u vl rock the exam cuz u r done wid the lectures and simply have to revise stuff again...but do an nbme first...that vl actually tell u wer u stand... hope this helps

guys, many people will come into ur life during this journey saying that usmle is impossible etc etc....me as a medical student face this prob everyday with Professors and PGs who know nothing but to discourage me saying none of their friends got into it...their frnds must've been &*#@^ who cares....whether or not we vl get into residency, no body knws....all we have in our hands are our scores and our hard work.....if u give ur 100%effort then nothing can stop u from achieving what u want....f@@@ those "frnds" of ur frnds who never made it into mle....they shudnt matter to us.....some people fail and some people find success...if we just waste our time thinking abt it then we r definetly doomed to fail.....so right now just think about giving ur 100%...and leave the rest to God....

I like your posts Smita and advice you're provided to other members on here. Keep up the great work and believe in yourself. I sincerely hope you all pass usmle step 1 on your first attempt with great scores.

If you do not, you can either take it as an opportunity or an excuse. That mindset will really determine how badly you want to be a physician.

Keep resources simple and don't overwhelm yourself and of course surround yourself with optimistic people during this stressful time.

good luck to everyone!

I havent done blocks per day but I can tell you this,

You should have total 2-3hours if you want to do a block in a day, first of all you do the block in the morning and keep it aside and then when you are done with all the questions then only go through the explanations,

If you try to do one question and read its explanation then it will take you forever to complete...so do the questions first, sit the answers later!

Default july 7th 10:45pm

did 1block of kaplan qbank- anatomy today!!!!

im planning to do subject wise blocks this week...vl do as many as poss
it felt new to solve ques....committed many silly mistakes, and actually forgot many important points even though i read fa again a few days back....but thisis a part of prep right? iam annotating stuff wich i feel i tend to forget easily, and stuff which i feel are new and important...
im using 2 different coloured pens ( to make it look attractive odrwise i feel bored to read them later :P...vl use 2 diff pens for uworld), and writing them on different sheets of paper which i intend to bind later to my fa notes...so that i can have enough of space for uworld!!!!

k then vl wak eup mrw mrng!!!!! goodnight fellas!!

Default july 8th....9am

did 1block of physio and half block of biochem.....vl finish it and do the explanation part in the evening....

the reason im not doing 2blocks of physio is becuz i felt that i need to do the explanation part of the tested block so that i can apply the concepts which i have missed in the next block...if one does 2 blocks of the same subject continuously then the same mistakes may be repeated and the overall performance many come down giving us a false perception that we have not done enough.....my opinion thats it
(i have made this point for those who are also planning to do subject wise blocks...gudluck)

yup....in fact all the "experiences" threads say the same thing!!!! cmon think it this way...the ques pattern is not similar (odrwise everyone wud score a 260+) but rather the concept on which they r testing u remains the same....unless u practice loads of ques u vl not to knw wer to apply ur concepts no matter how many times u read a book....that is why i have strtd kaplan qbank early....nd trust me while reading books i feel "yea right such an easy concept, why am i even readinng this" and when i was attempting a ques related to that i confidently answered them which turned out to be wrong and i was flabbergasted!!!!!!!!! but i maintained my cool nd kept reading the explainations!!!

people have been traditionally following uworld and kaplan.....everyone says the same thing after the xam!! tat thy vl fail....but many score approx their nbme scores itself!!!!

so dont get tensed at all...thats ur worst enemy and can hamper ur long prep!!!! believe me...u have lot of time still left and also done with first read, u r preparing fantastically...... just have some confidence... dont underestimate urslf

cmmrs has charts after the end of each chapter...go through them once or twice I think they will help

ok so micro review.....those out thr who are confused about what to do with this subj....well i dint find kaplan of much help....mayb i remb stuff vaguely but the notes were too boring and the videos tried to be funny but i felt i couldnt retain much...im doing cmmrs and fa simultaneously and found it to be of immense help...i would try to do atleast bacteriology( which im half way thru) and virology, considering they are the most high yield (due to time constraint)....
i would ask u to follow the videos if u r more of a visual learner, listen to them at 1.6x speed( regrt that i did this rather late) and supplement cmmrs instead of kaplan notes...
and of course....loads of questions too

gudluck all

Cmmrs should be your gita/Koran/Bible... In this case... Read the chaps quickly but mug up the charts nicely so that u remember word by word... And yes after that doing fa will finish ur micro... Best of luck S

Smita,

Hey I'm new to these forms and I came across your journal today and honestly could relate to it ALOT!!! I'm also doing my internship to so studying and maintaining my schedule along side my shifts are soooooooo annoying, you have good days and bad days more bad then good tho! Beyond frustrating if you ask me. So I've done Biochem and Embryo plus Histo, haven't gone thru Gross Anatomy yet i dont know why i just skipped it and started Physio lol dumb on my part but I've been meaning to go back to do it hopefully sooner then later. So i had a question, since i havent completed my first read i havent really done any qbanks or uworld questions. The most i do is videos Kaplan/Dr.Najeeb and FA and Kaplan lecture notes questions at the end of the chapter and aslo FA Q&A. A part of me just wants to get thru one read first and just focus on questions later (uworld etc) but then im also afraid that ill forget everything ive done.. What do you reckon i should do?

hi there!!! happy to see sumone who can relate to my position....ya i feel terrible preparing along with internship as i encounter my ups and downs literally everyday....but we must do our best right....
first....do ur gross anat....after u r done with ur physio just finisht...the more u postpone the less interest u vl develop (cuz funny im of the same type and i knw that feelin)
i generally finish a subject and also a first read of fa and i started kaplan qbank subject wise....im a kind of person who does a lot of passive reading and since it is one of the best qbanks i included it in my prep.....if u feel u too have this prob then u can definetly subscribe to aqbank nd learn to mould urslf to the exam pattern....
once u have decided, let me knw....i can tell u hw im trying to manage t along with duties

do what u feel is best for u....deep inside u must be knowing the answer
gudluck

I also get this feeling sometimes & im halfway in my preparation.I guess this s common during first read.Try to explain or discuss whatever u read with ur friends to get interest.Just go thru ur journal & that should inspire u to do more work.

Hi Smita,

Perhaps you should take a day off from studying. Seems that you are taking a serious toll on your brain. Spend that day writing down what you have covered and go over big concepts you have done with some friends. If you can explain it to them, you know it well and if you don't, perhaps your friends could help you out.

It is difficult to maintain that momentum while studying hard so maybe a day off will help you.

Day after that make a study plan and if you can incorporate some Uworld to see what is highly tested.

Go get some fresh air to reboot your brain. It just might work.

good luck!

Smita Di I am like 3-4 years younger to you and I feel confused whether I should say this or not...

I think you are not loving it....100%....because if you fall in love with your studies...that will automatically motivate you....I know this is tough in the real world but just think of the consequences of getting a 250...do they arouse you in any manner if so...try to love that score...think you will have to achieve it anyhow....then only you will be motivated like those who did 250+

and the answer to your question...did they sit all along on their pubic tuberosity....NO

They studied 2hrs but what did is retain it better than us because they loved it...so people like you and me have to put 2x3=6hrs only because the love is missing...

If somehow you can develop love for this exam and studies believe me you will succeed cuz you will retain better...

Failure is a better motivator than love...and I know ppl who did really well in their second attempt on step1...but I dont think you will need that...

Just chill relax meditate and read...and follow your plan...love what you are doing and be inspired by what you are doing...no one will need to motivate you once you start loving yourself and loving what you do...u will be ur guide...

Sorry if all of these sounded like some BS philosophical crap but give it a try

how did i pass med school wid good grades!!!! no idea
I know how you feel. Take a day (or couple days) off, clear your head. Try hitting the books then. Make a schedule. It's hard not to daydream, but not watching a movie is a doable task.
Just don't beat yourself up. What's done is done. Take a deep breath and make a reasonable schedule. If it's not working, try to understand what went wrong and learn from your mistakes. Be critical and don't make excuses.
Try to isolate yourself from distractions. Turn off your cell phone, use site blocker, make your studying environment as neat as possible to maximize your studying efficacy.
Take breaks. Sleep well, eat well and don't forget to exercise (just don't get carried away). Give yourself a break once in a while. Not a guilty one - a planned one. Try to have fun and relax once a week. Go out with friends, spend time with your family, whatever makes you happy.
You can do it.

the more questions you do the more your odds increase of scoring high...but Smita di keep in mind that there is also a limit to what you will be able to do and not...robbins is great for learning pathology we all know that but its huge and not usmle specific I guess...if you can then include it else skip it or leave it for last...

Btw 5hrs of pathoma is nice...are you taking breaks?
and at what speed are you watching... 1x or 1.5x or 2x...

and hain take breaks else it will be like the first day at gym...we do it all...next day we cant even walk!

Dont worry didi you will be able to crack this

If you need more questions for path, it's fine. It is not a must-have though.

Take care

hey smita, don't stress too much about your scores.
It'll go up, don't worry. The beginnings are hard. You need to push through to reach your goal.

I totally know what you mean. I was so upset this weekend when I though that my exam could be already over. Seems like no holiday for me this year. We are going to make it!!!!

So happy to hear that your prep is going well.
Take care

Mindset is important when reaching out for a goal. Negative thoughts and panic won't help anyone to get there.
Well, I plan to do it at the beginning of october, I don't have my date just yet. (I had to extend my eligibilty period and it takes a while). After that I'm going straight back to school, but this beast will be OVER!

yup u r ryt....negative thoughts takes us to no where....we must just try and try widout raising a possibility in the future after receiving scores that we cud have worked harder......so yes, this is the most important step in the ladder of success and it deserves our precious time.....
thnks again for helping me fight my pessimistic attitude and i also request everyone to do the same and feel the difference

gudluck wid ur prep mcquacky

Hey how is your prep going? I plan on taking it around October as well. But so far my nbme score hasn't been good. I have come so far in the prep but now I feel like I am burning out.
How are you guys holding it together? Stress is really getting to me now.

We all have bad thoughts and we are all stressed out. It's completely normal. But you cannot let that bring you down. I spent a few weeks unable to sleep going crazy that I'm going to fail. When you start to think this way, it's actually comforting somehow - you're preparing yourself for failure. Then, if you actually fail, it is easier to deal with the failure.
The best thing you can do is, don't let yourself think like this, a.k.a. fake it till you make it approach. It doesn't matter if you feel depressed or sad. Noone gives a ****. So go in front of the mirror and smile. Go out and get some sun exposure. (Sitting in a dark room all day is very depressing...). What I do is, I put some upbeat music on, dancing like crazy. Maybe you have some other way.
My point is, you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. Little by little you start to feel more relaxed and it'll be easier to stay on track. (If you have serious problem though, seek help. NOW!)
But, remember to: sleep right, eat right, exercise everyday and take some time off every week for other - not-study, not-work, not-school related activities.
Last, make sure that your schedule is realistic. If it's too much for you to handle, you won't be able to stick with it, which leads to: frustration, burn out and depression. Less is more, never forget that.
Good luck.
