Default USMLE-Rx - first aid express or ultimate video series

Hi everyone, I'm just starting a 4 month long study period to step 1 & really hate reading through FA, its taking way too long. I'm thinking of buying a video subscription of either of the products above. when I inquired from their website they said that the ultimate videos are based on the 2010,2011,2012 &portion of 2013 books. I am studying from FA 2014 and wonder how it will work with the videos since FA got a major overhaul from 2013 to 2014 product. Has anyone used the express or ultimate videos with 2014 or 2015 FA and how lacking (if at all) did you find the videos? Just need to know if its worth the money ?

TIA

Default regarding usmlerx videos 2015 version

Hi,
The 2015 Usmlerx videos are very good for listening to along with the 2015 First aid book. The 2015 lecturers seem very confident in their lectures, that is, if you know what they are teaching, you will have covered most of the important things with understanding of the concepts. Unlike the code-language like writing in the book, they actually take the time to explain stuff in the 2015 Express videos. They add information, make connections, contrast and so on.
You can speed up or slow down the audio so that you can move at the appropriate speed for you.
Make notes of important stuff in separate notebooks according to sections.
Hope this helps

Thanks Dant for giving me an idea of what to expect! What I gather from your reply is that you are using the USMLERx First aid 'Express' videos. have you had any exposure to the 'ultimate' videos? And do you know if the express videos are newly updated for the 2015 FA book? When I inquired they just said the ultimate videos They are running a pretty good deal on the ultimate videos these days as opposed to the express but I don't want to buy outdated videos just because they are cheaper

Default regarding usmlerx express

Hi,
the usmlerx Express 2015 videos are fully updated to follow along with the 2015 FA book, the subscription does allow you to also access 2014 express videos, but as all the 2015 express videos are on the website, you don't need to hear the 2014 version unless you want to.
As far as the ultimate videos is concerned, I have no experience but having watched a lot of express videos so far, I don't think you will feel the need for more explanations than what the express 2015 give as they are really thorough, the 2015 express version is vastly more detailed and explanatory than the 2013 express version. For any additional details the wikipedia is great and probably all you will really need to go along with FA and that too maybe less than 5% of the time.
I think for a variety of reasons like increased competition, low satisfaction with the 2013 express version may be the reason why the 2014 and 2015 express are so detailed.
Note that it takes me around one hour or more per 10 minutes of express video as i write down pretty much every word, that is why please consider making notes for each section in a separate notebook rather than into FA book as the explanations are really detailed especially for biochem, physiology, pharmacology instead of directly into the FA book, at least that's my opinion.
You can test this idea by first listening to the physiology or pharm sections to see how detailed they can be.
hope this helps

Dant,

That is a great breakdown to everything I needed to know, I'm thinking of purchasing this mainly because I'm really slow in reading FA, and if they give good explanations that's indeed a bonus for me!

Thanks so much for making my decision easier.

goood luck with your studies!
