Try to master the areas you already master and try to know more on the areas in which you are weak, im on my final month before D day and all you can do right now is detail tuning and improving in those weak areas.
Keep doing questions and keep getting use to tiredness because on the real thing after 5 hours our brains would be all screwed.

Looks to me like you're on the right track! I suggest that you go for an nbme. You'll see from there where you stand in terms of the actual step 1 score. It will guide you what your next steps will be or what subjects you need to work on.

Angry :-( bang head against wall

hey guys,

how's your motivation doing? i'm pissed....totally...
done kaplan lectures, done fist aid twice, did kaplan qbank(72%), doing uworld right now (71% an 500qs to go), did kaplan Qbook, working on LWWs Neuroscience and Biochemistry, Robbins Review of Pathology Qbook and First aid A&Q. will be finished with all that by end of feb and D day on 26th of march...
i could bang my head against the wall...i don't get anything, i always make the same mistakes and everyone (since i'm the only one in a 100km radius taking the exam) tells me to slow down and enjoy life...why don't people get what depends on this?????

thanks for listening just hat to get this off my soul..

I don't know if it's just me but if you don't have time constraints, I'd suggest to keep the first few months of studying fun!

During my first reading of KLN:
I'd go to the gym in the morning, then, study in Starbucks for an average of 8-10 hrs. At the end of the day, after studying, I'd go to a bar to have 1 or 2 beers with my usmle study partner! I also party/go out with friends once a week. At first, my study partner and I can't believe studying for the usmle can be so much fun! Those were the happy days...

During usmleworld/revision of KLN:
I started my serious studying. Now, I pull off 12-16 hours of studying per day at home. But I still go out with friends once a week or anytime I feel like my eyes are melting from staring at the computer monitor too much.

I feel like I can sustain prolonged hours of studying without getting frustrated too much because I kept my first few months productive yet fun.

Also, I find that variety in my studying plays a big role (alternating book/video/uw/etc).

I also have a secret: I... study date! Hahaha... I'd invite my crush to study with me. We'd go have dinner then study at a coffee shop after. Sooo... it keeps my weekends interesting.
16 hrs a day!! sounds great!!can just pull off 8-10 hrs a day only.and yeah with V-Day coming near.....ur story sounds a perfect love story with the spice of USMLE in it.great goingall the best

Don't wry about what others say... People always say alot of things abt the exam... Just do the hard work that you are already doing and take the exam when you are ready.
Good luck

I studied 4 hours in the morning and 6 hours in the afternoon, im doing my social service so i have to accomodate to time and endeavors of my social service, but somehow i managed to squeeze out some time in the morning
Right now Im studying up to 10 hours during the week and up to 14 hours in the weekend, sadly i lost almost of all my friends and my girlfriend (back when i started studying, she is also a med student but didnt understood the sacrifice i needed to put.. so yeahhh.) right now i feel lonely because im almost isolated from the world but well.. sacrifices need to be made if one wants to rape this exam.

A big factor for me back then is that I study in a coffee shop. So, when I'm there I don't have anything else to do but study. I don't have my bed, internet, tv, etc. I barely even have anyone to talk to. I just have the table and my book. Hence, I am forced to focus. The strong coffee also helps to keep my attention going too.

I didn't mention it before but I also worked back then for 2 days in a week, so I make sure I maximize the remaining 5 days. When you know you have limited time, you tend to make the most out of it. It was a great motivating factor for me.

I saw your qbank scores in your previous posts. You're doing great! I'm sure all your hard work will pay off! It might be a bit lonely right now but the happiness of step 1 = 99 will make up for it.

I can't really study at a coffee shop where its so loud so I stay home and study. But you are right when you don't have anything beside you.. you have nothing to do but studying.
Thanks! You did motivate a bit to study though

I guess studying in the morning and then in the evening seems to be a good idea. It is when I sit infront of one book for 3 or 4 hrs I get tired of looking at it and loose it... I am going to try to do couple of hrs in the morning and then take a few hrs break and do it again at night. I study better at night so I should keep that for the intense/boring courses!
Aww! I am sorry that your gf didn't understand what you were going through even though she's in the same field. And lost ur friends.. It will all be worth it when you do well at the end when you do good on the step!

Yeah I highly recommend that, studying for more than 4 to 6 hours straight is not the way to go unless you put some rests in between, when i do that i try to go to the gym in between morning and evening sessions, just to avoid any brief psychotic disorder hahaha.
Yeah I know it kind of sucks being in my situation.. but hey that proves they werent my friends and didnt care about me at all

Haha! "brief psychotic disorder" I like that! I think if I sit down and study straight for 8 hours I will definitely get that. Alright I am going to try your technique

Don't wry. It happens with alot of "friends". You are right now you know who your true friends are. Don't put that into ur head now. You rather put some extra knowledge into ur brain that wryn abt them!

Try to do NBME and see where you are at.. And depending on that you can may be do FA again... Or see your weaknesses and focus on that more...

Hahaha! I agree! That was an interesting turn in the conversation. Is patho2012 going to give XpaezX tips? I can't believe I logged off too early.

@XpaezX: Not fair! Pvt msg? You just made us very curious about your answer. Anyways, just pm me (and suka) too in case you get her back in the end or you get a new gf. I'd love to hear a happy ending.

Yep! This forum has been a big help! Thanks to the wonderful people here.

My motto actually is: a couple of posts a day, keep the boredom away!

It has been fun talking to you, too. I'm sorry about the leg... Looks like it's a difficult time for you but, like XpaezX said, there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Also, I promise, studying for step 1 is actually more fun than ward duties.

In step 1, you get to sleep any time you want, surf the internet, just stare blankly on the computer monitor... and, of course, watch Kaplan videos!! My favorite part! What can be more exciting than that?! Lol.

Kaplan videos are like suspense-thriller movies for me... I can't wait to see the end.

Help

I don't know why that q came up. I am fed up with Behavioral Science, trying to squeeze all the pieces of rape, domestic violence, developmental stone, child abuse... up into my tiny belly and not to shake it up with movement (to regurg and digest them gradually and naturally) ... Then I read all the strong messages, including "brief psychotic disorders!!!" and "rape the exam!!!" and "lets rock!!!" which got me very emotional and unstable...

d_wiqed,suka: I guess, now you all know Xpaez 's action plan, whats your opinion?
I am j saying...
Happy & productive study, you guys!!!

LOL!! This is just the BEST thread ever!

Now, I am starting to believe that there are two types of usmle-takers in the world:

1. one type takes Anti-Depressants
2. the other type takes Anti-Psychotics

@ patho2012: We all know which group you belong! I can just imagine you going BOOM when you read all those "key words" you mentioned above. HINT -->

So, what can I say about XpaezX's plan? Hmmm... Let me see...
Oh, yeah right! I don't know his plan! He only private messaged you, remember? LOL

The only plan I know he has is in his earlier message in this thread (when he introduced himself) and it said: "My advice to guys is send all your gfs to hell..."

Do you think we can request a future thread from XpaezX entitled: "my step 1 experience" + "my lovelife included"? LOL

Mabuhay! I'm from the Philippines too.

I'm also targeting the last week of April to the first half of May as my test date. But I haven't scheduled my step 1 yet.

I might know you... OR wait... Are you one of my friends???

What school are you from? I'm from UST but did my internship in PGH. Did you also just take the August 2011 boards like me?

Where are you in your prep? I haven't seen you post your prep in this thread.

We might be able to help each other out. It's nice to bump into you here!

LoL! Steady state.

My prep with uworld right now feels more like, in pharma terms, Loading Dose. Coz it's my first qbank.

Can't help you there though. You're much more advanced in your prep. Uworld is your 2nd qbank, right? Let's see what the veterans will say...

Good luck!

--> very funny!! Loved that look. Well-described! We really do look like that when we start qbanks!

Although the uworld scores can really be a pain in the ass, don't let it determine your overall mood about step 1. A 99-er once said that the only thing that can really predict where you are now is nbme scores -- not qbank scores or score correlators.

If you really feel like you're going nowhere, well, this may sound crazy but... why not take an nbme? An expanded one. It will make things a LOT more interesting.

Then, from there, work on your weak subjects. Finish uworld. But at least you know where stand and what your goals are (i.e. improve this/that subject). When you take another nbme, then, you'll see progress.

It will be a shot of adrenaline for you. But at the same time you'll see for yourself that you're going somewhere.

Anyway, that's just a crazy idea. Let's see what the others will say. =)

i think 55% is a really good score to start from friends of mine had the same problem last year with the 2008 version but their scores improved really fast...

I did say it was a "crazy" idea, right? Lol!

Anyway, I do hope we have the veterans/gurus' blessings. Guys where are yoooooouuuu...

What I gleaned from previous threads is that:
nbme 7 -> most accurate predictor (there's a poll; it won)
nbme 11 -> it has long stems

Which one did you buy that has an expanded feedback? I'll start with that. But if both have expanded feedback, I'm not so sure. I know step_enhancer took both. I think what she did was 7 then 11. She posted a thread about it last week. If you have further questions, maybe we can ask her.

Good luck tomorrow on the nbmes!

What's the equivalent in the 3-digit usmle score? I haven't taken it yet but I read that you can convert it to the actual usmle score.

Yep! I saw in step_taker's conversion table in a thread here that it's 214.
That's great! In the old 2-digit system, that's practically >90 already!
You'll have no problem making it to 240 in time for your exam!

Congrats!!

Hehehe... If you noticed in my previous posts, I don't know how to put links when I post a message. Lol

But I saved the table and here's the attachment.

For the thread, I just typed "nbme" in the forum search and stumbled upon it while looking through the threads. It was easy to find.

I tried looking for it again.

It's in the General Topics Recommended Threads. The title is "NBME scores Prediction and Correlation" by Sabio.
(Yep, my bad. It was posted by Sabio and not Step_taker)

You can use advance search and type in "nbme" and "sabio".

Sorry... I really don't know how to put links here.

Wow! Mabuhay! hehehe..Yes I also took the August 2011 boards. I'm from Davao Medical School and sadly I'm the only one from our batch interested in taking the USMLE. It's nice to bump into you here too. I hope we can help each other out if we ever make it to Step 2 CS (for practice).

As for my prep, after passing the boards I took two months off then resumed studying full time November, on and off during christmas to new year then full time again. I'm using the same books (FA 2010 with annotation, Snell, Katzung, BRS patho, Kaplan biochem, Kaplan & BRS physio + Kaplan behavioral science) and the same study method I used for our boards (12 hours total per day, 5-15min break in between while listening to kaplan audio, 2 hours exercise/meal/tv, answer 100 questions before sleep, 6-8 hrs sleep)

The only difference is I read Kaplan books at the same time and write down what's not found in our usual review book to my FA. By the end of feb I'll be done with my 2nd reading, I'll do usmleworld by then, and afterwards from march to april repeat over and over from cover to cover my first aid 2010 and my revisions.

Good luck in your exam.. I know you'll do well as UST is the top medical school here with hundreds of board takers and only 1 failing last august 2011 (that's no small feat). Hope we make it to the other side of the bridge

How long did it take you to read it? And how was it compared to path BRS or Kaplan LNs

You have been doing pretty good. So you should just go ahead and take the NBME! Think about the advantages! You take it now and know how the real exam might be (close to it). And if you do good then you are already in the right path. If you don't get the score that you get then it's still good for you because you can realize your mistakes and correct them before the actual exam. Try to get over the fear now and do it because you don't want to have this fear before the actual exam...
Good luck!!

Eventho this question is not addressed to me ill answer as i have read all 3 books.

BRS PAthology is extremely sexy and well written and has the facts you have to know.

Goljan is good but its long and has awesome images but thats about it, Im a medium reader and it took me one month to finish Goljan from cover to cover.

kaplan pathology simply sucks, both the manual and the live lectures... as plain as that.

Also learning pathology from Qbanks its way better, at least for me. Ill also follow your suggestion and ill take an NBME... may the lord have mercy on my poor latino soul

@Infinity-MD

Sure! That'll be great. We can be usmle buddies and future CS partners. I'll keep you company if you don't know anyone else taking the usmle. I'll pm you and you can add me in FB.

Thanks for the compliment! I'm sure you'll also do well because step 1 is about hard work, and preparation. The med school is just an added bonus.

I read almost the same books as you did for the local boards except that I used usmle Road Map for gross anatomy, Lippincott for biochem (selected chapters), Kaplan for pathology, and preventive medicine Pre-Test for biostat.

After the local boards, I read the Kaplan books and Goljan RR until mid-December. I only watched behavioral science videos. I studied 4-5 days/week then because I work and go out a lot. I had a 2-week break during the christmas holidays.

By January, I started with usmleworld. By March, I'll be doing my revisions and watch kaplan videos for selected subjects. Then, simultaneously or after, kaplan qbank. Then, 2nd run of usmleworld.

I admire your 12-hour study method. Yep, that's the way to go. That's also my plan for my revision days.

Good luck! I wish you all the best!

Do BRS pathology only, goljan is overrated and believe me.. its extremely hard to read because its way loaded with info...

BRS path has everything you have to and mUST know, and also it has questions at the end of each chapter, which is a nice feature.

If you do have goljan or have it downloaded the only thing i would recommend is:
Read from chapter 1 to chapter 8.
Look at all the images.
read the charts of the respiratory, cardiovascular and neuro sections only!

Dont do kaplan.. poorly written, misses information and has some mistakes, better spend your time reading from reliable and awesome sources.

@XpaezX: BRS patho -> sexy?

@suka:
I LOVE Goljan patho... How come lately everyone else doesn't? Without the audio, it took me around 2 weeks. I think the audio will make reading it easier. The lectures are good. He is amazing at integrating concepts which is what we need for step 1.

Goljan Pros:
- Peace of Mind (bec everyone else read it )
- Audio (you can follow his audio based on the book)
- There's also Goljan slides (it's like an atlas) that you can follow along with the audio. The pictures are a big plus for the exam.

Goljan Cons:
- Frustrating if you don't like it
- Time-consuming if you don't like it

My suggestion:
If you can't stand it that much, read a book that you like. Whichever it is. XpaezX is right. The qbanks are overloaded with pathology questions, you'll get sick of patho. If people think Goljan is detailed, there are tons of info in qbanks that are not even in Goljan! Usmleworld is like a separate patho book. Just make sure you do extensive notes when doing the qbanks.

Goljan is good I didnt say it wasnt, i just say its overrated.
I didnt talk about the audios or the atlas both of which I already did and have, Suka asked me about the book only, which is nice and has awesome images but its hard to read even if you like it. But you are right one must find peace and pleasure when reading a book so its really a personal desition

Actually, I do agree with everything you said about Goljan, BRS patho, and Kaplan. I like Goljan patho but it's like the other overrated book (FA), it has its flaws. I just thought maybe Suka doesn't know about the lecture and slides yet so I included it.I guess I did look a bit like an overzealous defender of Goljan in my previous post. Sorry...

I haven't really looked into the audio or the slides. I just have the RR book and I don't know I guess the way its organized and stuff... I just never liked that book even when I was taking Path 1 and 2 in med school. I read the Big Robbins for Path 1 and BRS for path 2.

I'm a non-video, non-audio advocate too.

I know, bud, what you mean. That's why it's sooooo laaaate in my prep that I'm only starting to do videos (physio and others).

Just try 2 hours of the audio and see for yourself. That's what i did. I then thought he was amazing.

I came across a pdf form of the slides, I'll pm them to you just in case you'll need it.

@XpaezX: Thanks! Yep, I better get back to uworld after this. I haven't met my daily quota of questions yet.

A 27-year-old male presents to the outpatient clinic with atypical chest pain. He also complains of palpitations, light-headedness, and tremors. ECG reveals sinus tachycardia. Laboratory studies show negative urine metanephrines and normal TSH levels. It's February 14 and he says he just came from dinner.

Peripheral blood smear is shown in the slide below.

What is your diagnosis?

Hey everyone, I've been checking out this site for a while now, but don't really post much/ My exam is coming up soon - end of March and I've been studying for a while now - on and off. Its been about a year and it really depresses me how far behind I've gotten. I've gone through a few things in my life that have disrupted my mental focus, and have slacked off a bit too in the past. Lately I've been feeling a bit depressed, but have been consistent with reading 10 hours a day for the past 2.5 months.
Anyways, I'm half way through my first read, have gone through 40 % of uworld, made tons of notes in my first aid. I don't think I'd be ready by my exam date honestly (last day of March) compared to what I've read on here - how many times students have repeated reads. Does anyone have any advice for me? I really don't want to think about applying for an extension - I've already extended my 3 month eligibility once, and with so many family members and friends waiting on me, I am really feeling like a failure to take even more time. Any honest thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated, thanks in advanced.

Hey u and me seem to be on the same boat:P..but am still obstinate enough not to postpone my exam...still a long way to go..mine is on 2nd april..well the number of reads of FA is generally 3(vide recommemnded threads where such a poll has been put up)..now try solving at least 2 blocks of qs everyday(with their answers explanation of even correct qs)..and u can master uworld in 20-25 days..still u have thus another 20 days to go..and believe me second read of fa will be quick and 3rd even quicker,in between a couple of NBMEs and UWSAs here and there and well we can definitely do it..am trying my best shot with a broken leg..and am sure u will be able to do it too with ease..gud luck

LOL!

Since you're my friend, I shall sacrifice a virgin on Zeus' altar for you.

So how many virgins do you think it will take for you to get a 240+?

That's a great idea! How many do you think it will take?

I live in a small pacific island. There might not be enough women here.

Do you think virgin chickens will do?

I think I can also offer a goat.

Lol!!
Now the conversation is turning 'juicy'...sacrifice for marks!!r not our sweat and tears we r shedding for usmle(and of course after uworld solving)'virgin'!!can't they suffice as sacrificing materials!!well i dont know much about my religion let alone others but if these 'virgin' sacrifices dont suffice well then i will really get angry with 'virgin's:P

Ok! We'll have to wait for XpaezX's initial score then.

I hope he does get a high mark!

XpaezX is a great guy but I'll really feel sorry for the virgins, chickens and goats.

LOL!

Thanks! And must be difficult with a broken leg. Will it be healed by your exam date? How many times have you gone through the FA ? My goal was to get my first read of kaplan done by the end of the month, and then review twice more within the last month. I took the kaplan course about a year ago, so its more like a second read but honestly have forgot so much. I've been incorporating DIT lectures each time I go through some of my FA, it helps, but takes a while to listen to the lectures. Have been trying goljan audio as well, I really can't stand the book, I started with it initially and it was just too time consuming for me. I find kaplan patho and the goljan lectures much better

This has been the greatest challenge in my life, and being already being prone to severe anxiety, preparing for this exam hasn't helped much. I've been getting less sleep each day too - with the thoughts of this exam circling my mind all throughout the night, but I bet that's pretty common, even the normal person would be experiencing high anxiety levels for this exam. I've been trying things like St John's Wort and have been trying to get more daylight now, since I believe I'm also suffering from mild Season AD. Working out did help me relax in the past, but I feel I no longer have time for that. I'm more of a night owl though, but have been trying to change things around. My exam isn't far off from your date. I really can't wait to get this exam done with, and successfully too, because being isolated from the world is tough. Goodluck to you too!!

Hi! Advice on...? That's a bit too broad. You might want to be more specific. Anyway, look up the Step 1 experiences link at bottom of the main page of the forum. There are tons of great advice there. If you have any other question you can't find the answer to, feel free to post a thread and ask.

Default Apriiiiiiiiiil aaaahhhhhhhhh

April will be the month of Honor/dishonor for me!

I'm constantly getting 50's in UW, so hope that will get better soon or i might just have to commit suicide!

20 days left for UW!
After that I'll spend 4 weeks doing a focused review of FA and it's annotations (from KLN and UW) only!

Wish u guys all the best!

If your scores in uworld won't get better then you're going to commit suicide?

Dude, that's too early! Wait after you first nbme... Then we can plan your euthanasia together! LOL!

I'm just joking! But we can make a thread here on what's the most painless way to die.

It's just going to be like any nbme discussion...

Google it, there are Goljan slides that go great together with his audio. I think it is pretty much golden (audio+slides)
