My eligibility period goes until march 30th, but I'm not confident right now.. thinking about postponing in, but it's going to cost me some $$..

Well, I've been preparing for almost 8 months... but lately (last 2 months) I'm not studying at all I had problems with my ex-girlfriend and we are now trying to go back again... and study = zero.

I was always motivated and studying really hard, but now even If I have time (i'm on vacation) I dont feel like studying at all... I need more motivation... she is supporting me and stuff, but...

Well.. I'm trying to finish Goljan RR Patho book but it's so boring to read it.. it seems that everything is important and it's impossible to memorize... I read and after 30 secs I forgot what I've just read... I'm thinking about using BRS, dont know... or just listen Goljan Audio + FA...

Let's go guys!! Good study for everyone

Thank you for the advice! It's really hard to stay motivated when you are studying by yourself but we have to keep going.
I found a quote today that I thought was really funny:
"People often say that motivation doesnít last. Well, neither does bathing Ė thatís why we recommend it daily. óZig Ziglar"

LOL

hey man ! cheer Up !
I can understand you quite good why motivation is lost ! it has to come back!
Do goljan very wisely! if have time for ex. 7-8 hours a day, after doing one chapter in giljan, do Review of pathology q-s from robbins./google it/
you know about 40% of exam is patho and you need to put in it most of your work. Yeah it's true ..when you read you kinda don't remember anything of that stuff but people are doing so, you are not the one with this kind of problem
Do your best to score high !!!
have you tried to use Doctors in training ? these guys are doing quick review of basic concepts for the exam acompaning First Aid - only 15 days. you can google and download videos and all the stuff...

I have been wondering the same... I would love to apply for 2013 but I don't know if I have enough time.. One thing I keep telling myself is that I need to be prepare and not worry about if I can apply or not, I need to worry about doing good in step 1.

Good Luck!

Unhappy Feel you here...

Having the same problem. I'm about to finish firs read. I still have to read pharmacology, pathology and SC. I think that in 2 days I'm done with physiology but my head feels like "ventricular isovolumetric contraction". I'm taking the exam on April/27...

I know I cannot give up... maybe is just the melancholy of X-mas

Help I've heard...

5 months to prepare CK is more that enough. My friend did it that way, in 1 year he prepared step 1 and step 2 Ck. I am planing doing step 1 on april and after it, start with CK. I'll rest a few days an then start reading, not gonna wait for the results... I'm sure I will pass (The only thing I'm not sure of is... the score)

I haven't gone through Goljan Audio Lectures yet!! You can do them side by side with the book but most of the seniors suggest to do Goljan Audio Lectures once you are done with Qbanks, as It integrates all the subjects very well and you can draw maximum of it once you are done with Qbanks...!

Cool introduction

Hello fellow steptakers!
I just reserved a spot, the 31st of march!
It suddenly feels very real and i think i finally know what the panic attack everyone is talking about means!!!

I don't know if i will be able to do my CK in time for this year's match.
I think i can -a little more than 3 months- who knows!

After finishing BRS patho and physio, and KLNs for the rest of the subjects, i did FA once and am doing it another time now, hopefully will be done with the second read in a couple of weeks...after which i will start with UW

I used BRS and KLN for understanding FA only.
I would say my focus for the exam is only FA and UW and nothing more. I think it's enough, but who knows.

75 Days till my Exam.... ahhhhh!!!! (March 22nd)... Anyway, bookmarked this thread and will probably be posting an excessive amount given that I just deactivated my facebook (please /slap me when I get annoying)... I hope others will join in. I'm currently using FA, UWorld, Kaplan lectures, DIT, and Goljan... along with watching some old lectures from school to refresh my memory and give myself a little bit of a break. Focusing the most on FA, Goljan, UWorld... Secondly on Kaplan, and lastly on DIT.. although that might change. I already feel overhwhelmed and I am just starting. This is probably due to the fact that I just scheduled my date and am planning to start rotations on March 26th.

GOOD LUCK ALL and please keep posting helpful things... Also, let me know if you have a test date around mine and want to be study buddies... cuz i plan to hardcore this ish... Just to chat and stuff.. pm me if you are interested.

Time to do some Cardio...

DIT = Doctors In Training.... It's 15 days of 3 lectures a day (45 lectures) that goes over first aid from cover to cover... it's a good review if you have the discipline to follow it and you don't want to have to go over first aid by yourself.

when do you begin to take the first NMBE test mostly? And after getting the evaluation of my weak areas, where should I strengthen those things? Does FA help to do well on NMBEs?

hey guys!

I finished my basic sciences in may.

Did Kaplan live lectures 14 weeks in Chicago from June-September.
(didn't study too much outside of the classroom, tried to a get a bit more partying in lol)

Read over Kaplan on my own Sept-Mid Dec thoroughly and intensely.

Dec.9: I wrote a written NBME (my school requires my to pass, a score of 68%+, a written NBME in order to be eligible to write the step 1); I scored 59. That was my first attempt, we are allowed 3 attempts at this written NBME.

Mid Dec-Jan: I did Kaplan Qbank (completed 65% of the qbank; average score of 60%)

Early January I gave an online NBME (form 3); scored 290 (equivalent to 60% for a written NBME), but I did find this nbme more difficult than the written NBME.

Second week of Jan-Now: I started reading through the systems section of FA, an organ a day + Uworld questions (40-50 a day). I'm currently have an average score of 60% (~300 questions in).

I will be done FA organ systems by the end of this upcoming week, then I need to decide what I should do next.
Another NBME? Goljan? DIT? Pathoma? Read FA again?

Any and all input will be greatly appreciated,
Thank you.

Default will we able to go for the match ?

hey
count me in,i have been delaying my exam, had breaks and stresses through my preparation,so not fully prepared yet, but now (alhumdulillah(thankGod) things are better.if we go for step 1 in march ,my concern is will we able to take ck and go for the match?
if we motivate each other ,we can be alot of help to each other
also kaplan except patho ,that is goljan with audios and uworld and kaplan qbank and FA .i have used high yield in addition but not sure about using further ,we need to hold onto a kaplan and goljan for text books

Default This thread is like... some sort of social support =P

I just finished all Kaplan books without videos and I'm currently doing usmleworld questions. I'll do a second read of Kaplan and then probably do Kaplan qbank. I hope I'll be ready to take the exam in April. I don't want to prolong my studying anymore.

Hi!
I think you should still consider as if your doing the exam in march and study hard for it. I know its hard to deal with relationship problems and distracts us from studying but if you think about it we fight one day and then get back the next day... But the time you waste not studying is not going to come back. Even if you can't memorize stuff start doing questions and may be looking at the results will motivate you to study.
Good luck!

I'm almost going to finish RRP, but I think that is getting really boring to read it. My last topic is BS, and then... I hope that I will be able to read it all once more, (At least one more time)... my actual plan was/is to read all 3 times and then give 2 months to make questions. Are you in the same dilemma as I am?

Help Lets Rock

Hello guys, IMG from mexico, Failed my first attempt back in May 2010
Went to Internship and came back inspired to kick some ass and beat this god forsaken monster.
Right now I already finished Kaplan lecture notes and videos (2010) edition, Goljan RRP and audios.
BRS Pathology, BRS Behavioral sciences.
Already completed UWorld 70% first time 88% second time.
right now im doing kaplan Qbank average around 74% (halfway done).
Been studying my ass off since last july, average 6-8 hours on weekends up to 13-14 hours.
My advice to you guys is send your girlfriends to hell (last time i failed i ad 2 big problems, my grandmother died and my girlfriend at the time cheated on me).
Ill write my exam on march 16th (hopefully).
Im tired as hell waking up at 5 am cause im in my social service so that i can study at least 4 hours in the morning, sleeping on average 6.30 hours.
working out almost everyday for at least 1 hour to avoid falling into a psychotic episode haha.

Lets all rock and beat this exam keep it up guys!

I know what you mean. I remember when I read histo from kaplan, I was calling everyone ranting how absolutely boring it is! I was practically imploding. To think that histo was my favorite subject in college and in medicine! This book made me hate it. In one of the polls here, it's actually the worst section in the KLN series.

I toughed it out because, well, it's "kaplan". It took me almost a week to finish that section. In other subjects, in 7 days, I am probably finished with a book already (I don't watch videos). At hindsight, I should have read another histo review book because understanding concepts and retaining them are key to the usmle exam and this book didn't provide any.

I think you have two options:
1. You can go read another histo review book. Pro: Less frustrating. Cons: Do you think you have time? Reading a whole review book in this subject may make you dwell into unnecessary details. Mastery is key but histo is a low-yield subject if you're running out of time.

2. This is what I did. I got Wheater's Atlas of Histology (or any other histo book) from med school and just read the topics I found in histo KLN in the textbook. Just to clarify concepts. And then, I moved on.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

I usually only drink coffee in the mornings, afterwards I just use will and mind power to stay focused and with enough energy to keep reading and doing questions.
Remember that you need to have from good to above average rests, if not your only use your hippocampus to learn and we all know what happens there

Yep, I agree. When I was reviewing for my local boards, I was drinking brewed coffee every 3 hours. After 2 months, I switched to daily energy drink and coffee/iced tea. They were very effective. However, the week before my exam, even though stopped all caffeine (and energy drinks) altogether, I couldn't sleep. I was so tired and I had ugh, constipation, etc. My body was so crashed.

Now, for the usmle, I just take 1 cup of coffee in the morning and iced tea in the afternoon.

I personally don't take any caffeine to keep myself awake. Since I have tried several times when I was doing my basic sciences and fell asleep 30 mins after drinking them.
I think you need to get good sleep everyday. And if your not sleeping well then your body gets tired. So it's about time for you to take a nap and wake up and start studying again. If you think you slept enough then try to take a 5 min break from studying and do something that interests you (commedy video, listen to music) or even go for a walk in your house or get some fresh air by standing in the balcony.
Try to reduce on the caffeine! Be healthy and get more studying done

Is it a bad idea to do 10 UW Question bursts in a specific topic to review/break up the studying?

I'm sort of doing that myself. It's my second reading and the way I'm reviewing is, for example, I run-through immunology in KLN and do questions on the corresponding topic on usmleworld.

From my experience, it's boring just doing plain KLN reading and it's also tiring just doing usmleworld questions day-in and day-out.

Variety works for me.

If you're planning to use usmleworld as a learning tool (i.e. take notes from it) I guess your plan is good. However, if you plan on using it solely as an evaluation tool, that's different. But you have nbmes for that.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks, it does help. Sometimes I feel like I have ADD because I start with one thing and end up somewhere else, but I think it's more of a variety thing like you said. I try to mix it up; reading some notes/books, doing questions, watching lectures, listening to Goljan... I wish I could just put Goljan on at like 7 am and listen to him till 7 pm, but it either gets too boring, too overwhelming, or (most of the time) a combo of both.

I just want to share:

I am happy because I just found a cure to my insomnia!

(I have started to abuse anti-histamines lately to make me fall asleep. )

Nothing is more effective than... kaplan videos! Woohhhoo!

It's two birds in one stone: I learn and I fall asleep.

Hahaha! That's what I'm afraid of... I might roll over my macbook air and wake up with two Ipads!

I wonder if my parents will pay for usmle collateral damages?

I know what you mean... I am also tempted to buy the new one bec all the notes in my FA (2010) makes it look so disorganized. I just want to redo everything! Plus, I'm superficial. I feel that the colors in the FA 2012 would make me happy.

I guess my decision would depend on how much diligence I still have left when the time comes that I plan to do an FA overhaul.

If I feel too lazy to rewrite everything (which I think I will be after MONTHS of studying), I might just stick to my FA (2010) and make use of correction fluid/tape.

Hi, same here..I still use my first aid 2010 because it's full of notes from textbooks. In my opinion, new editions can't match my notes, and it's better to stick to an old book you know so well than go with a new and fancy one you barely know. Besides I have other review books to complement whatever is not found in FA 2010

Yep, you have a point there. There's a sense of familiarity (and hopefully, retention) that goes with using my FA (2010). That's why it's so hard to let go and be exchanged for the 2012.

Well i have through kaplan pathology only.didnot find goljan RR interesting.Dont know about pathoma..but must say a thing..if this is ur first read..or second..just go through either of them that will help u to understand the thing..Goljan is quite vast and so finally u have to curtail to review books like FA.and well there u will find all concepts rolled into one and can easily get a scruff of the UWORLD qs.HOPE THIS HELPS

Has anybody noticed any significant differences between the FA 2012 and the 2010 FA, if anyone has seen both?

All the best XpaezX. I know having a scheduled date can increase your adrenaline! But the brighter side is that it will help you get more focused and will help you study harder.

I guess the number of hours depends where people are in their prep...

I don't know if it's just me but if you don't have time constraints, I'd suggest to keep the first few months of studying fun!

During my first reading of KLN:
I'd go to the gym in the morning, then, study in Starbucks for an average of 8-10 hrs. At the end of the day, after studying, I'd go to a bar to have 1 or 2 beers with my usmle study partner! I also party/go out with friends once a week. At first, my study partner and I can't believe studying for the usmle can be so much fun! Those were the happy days...

During usmleworld/revision of KLN:
I started my serious studying. Now, I pull off 12-16 hours of studying per day at home. But I still go out with friends once a week or anytime I feel like my eyes are melting from staring at the computer monitor too much.

I feel like I can sustain prolonged hours of studying without getting frustrated too much because I kept my first few months productive yet fun.

Also, I find that variety in my studying plays a big role (alternating book/video/uw/etc).

I also have a secret: I... study date! Hahaha... I'd invite my crush to study with me. We'd go have dinner then study at a coffee shop after. Sooo... it keeps my weekends interesting.
