Smile Dhanush Step 1 Experince (249/87)

I am an IMG from India, these forums have helped me a lot in my preparation.
I thank all the people who have helped me in my preparation.
Here is my share to this forum, Hope it's helpful

It took me around 7 months for preparation:
First reading of each subject took around 8 days (kaplan), pathology took 15 in Goljan.

I tried to concentrate on concepts and tried to remember as much as possible at the first reading itself.
I found pathology very volatile and was almost mad at the end of first reading, but don't panic guys almost every one goes through this.

Later I revised both Kaplan and Goljan once..it took me one and half month..

USMLE World Experience:
Then came the uworld, it took me almost 2 months for first reading and 15 days for revision,,this was the best part in the entire usmle preparation.
I took uworld as a learning tool, there are a lot of stuffs to learn in uworld.
I did all the questions subject-wise, I felt doing each subject separately was better because the concepts are repeated many times it gets reinforced if done in a short interval of time..
and I wrote down a lot of notes form uworld which helped me a lot in revision.
I went through these notes whenever I got time..
uworld helped me in understanding the type of questions that will be asked in the real exam and helped me plan my approach.
I recommend that one should write down all the new concepts that one comes across in uworld and keep going through it whenever one finds time.

Later it took 15 days to revise uworld. Then I took my first nbme one month before exam NBME 7 - (235) , I freaked out a little bit during the NBME It taught me a lot bout time management

First Aid Experience
Then I read first aid once..it helped me to integrate all the subjects.
I guess we all have felt this::"we start with one subject, at the end we feel pretty confident in it, later wen we do 2 or 3 more subjects all the matter in your brain feels jumbled up, no matter how well we have read it the first time"
I felt the same even after reading everything twice, first aid clears all that confusion,
Don't rely completely on first aid, it only adds to your preparation, it is not the sole means to get a 99 at the exams as some say it is.

After reading first aid once I did one last revision of Kaplan and Goljan. It took around 20 days..in between I took NBME 12 (scored 240)

Then after completion of revision one week before exam i took NBME 11 (got 261)
then for the final week I read first aid..

Important Notes to remember:
* please don't read first aid before uworld, cos there are chances that you might over look minor things if you don't have a uworld knowledge prior doing FA.
* I felt doing uworld subject wise better. I managed to do 65-70 questions in a day and wrote down all the important stuffs.
* after doing my first NBME, just one month before exams, I concentrated on a set of questions or a few concepts in which I felt I was weak of which took a lot time to solve..eg;;--
#acid base balance
#questions on A-a (partial pressure) difference
#genetics(reading a pedigree chart{the faster u read the quicker v get to the answer})
#a read a bit for Conrad Fischer's book on ethics (Kaplan) there are some 100 cases at the end, I just went through a few.
#I repeatedly read a few tables which I felt were high yield
{substance abuse in kaplan, nephritic and nephrotic syndrome in goljan, crohns and ulcerative colitis in goljan, chemotherapy drugs in kaplan pharmac, tumor markers in oncogens etc...} I found these tables very volatile I went through them repeatedly.
*during the last few weeks of exam i concentrated on areas on which i was weak.

Exam Experience:

Be calm, manage the time properly
I went thorough the questions in the pattern they were given. Some prefer to do the easy questions 1st and then go to the tough ones, I feel its a waste of time and leads to unnecessary panic at the end of the block wen you are left with all the tough questions.
I took a break of 5 min after each block.

I got 249/87

Well guys I guess that's it....
If u have any doubts plz do ask,

And one more thing...guys am planning to apply for observerships and externships, so would anyone suggest any university based hospitals which provide observerships for IMGs!

congrats to your great score
i'm a bit confused...so far i only saw scores over 240 with a 99-two digit score. was the competition so hard? or is it the change in the two/three-digit-policy that now the two digit scores are lower?

step_enhancer

yeah 18-20 days is enough for a revision of uworld..n yeah timed mode is better, u ll get the real feel of the exam,,

n questions in the main exam r similar to uworld in toughness,,n yeah there ll be a lotta direct questions..
approx 30 questions in a block r easy,
some 10-12 questions r a bit tough.
n i felt atleast one or 2 questions were out of the world,i couldnt figure out wat exactly they were asking

in one hour of a block, o used to complete approx 27-30 questions in first 35 min.i was left wit atlest 5-7 min in the end for every block in which i reviewed marked questions.

keep the last few days ,,atleast 10 days to strengthen your weak areas n to study a last round of first aid,,
all the very best..

PS: and the user interface is same as that of the uworld, so u need not take the tutorial, thereby u ll be adding 15 more min to your break time

MedPharm

ya they hav changed the 2 digit scoring pattern.
so now a days its almost impossible for someone to get a 99
..
n if one has to compare scores, one should use the 3 digit scores..

n the competition is almost the same it used to be earlier..

have always been an enemy of this 2-digit-score-thing. i found an article where they say that they want to get rid of it in general...

thanx!!!
well u can manage without goljan RR,but u hav to do the pathology part of uworld well, wat kaplan pathology lacks is covered in uworld,,
if time permits go through the high yield tables in the goljan atleast..table for vasculitis in pg 152 RR
table of thrombocytopenia in pg 257
respiratory pathogens table in pg 285
ulcerative colitis n crohns in pg 348
urine analysis table in pg 394
nephric n nephrotic in pg 402
teaticular tumors in pg 427
STDs in 437
ovarian tumors in pg 460
islet tumors in pg 506
[all pg numbers r from goljan RR 3rd edition]
i found these tables to be useful..
do the pathology uworld very well,,that should be enough i guess,
good luck

hi,
plz see my reply to earlier post bout goljan notes,,well, i feel if one studies pathology uworld well , then goljan is not an absolute necessity for getting a high score,if time permits go through the important tables in goljan, the ones i hav mentioned in the earlier post. i hav a couple of friends who studied only kaplan for pathology n got a score above 240....

n i dunno much bout MedEssentials,,so i cant really compare it wit FA,,better see the FA once n decide for yorself,,i felt FA to be very good ,a lot of kaplan n uworld is covered in it in a concise way n it took me some 7 days(bout 10-11 hours of study each day) for 1st reading n bout 5-6 days for a revision fo the book,,
good luck

hi
i didnt get your question correctly..wen did u start studying, how much hav u finished..
emm, u hav 4 months till the exam..
if u stsrted preperation now , then i guess its a little tough to read 3 times kaplan n uworld..u migh wanna reconsider your plans,n one more thing, v all read at different pace, u might be a fast reader n u might finish it in 4 months, but do think bout your studying pace n manage your time table...

it all differs on our personal needs, sometimes how well we read matters than how many times,,
one of my friend read 2 times kaplan n 2 times uworld,,u should be confident at the end of the preparation that u hav given your best in the preparatiion,n u hav a good nbme score..

i ll explain my plan, adjust your schedule according to your needs,,
i took almost 2.5 months to study 1st 2 reading of kaplan, n took around 2.5 months for uworld..
n the third reading of the kaplan doesnt take much time..i did it after the uworld n i went through it very fast, giving importance only to the tough areas n high yield parts of the book.
i 3 reading of th books took:
anatomy 2.5 days
pharmac 2 days
physio 2.5
patho(goljan) 4 days
BS 1.5 days
biochem 2 days
micro n immuno 2.5 .
...

during the course of the study make sure u give the right effort in a right way,,wat i mean is,,dont take too much of stress n try to pack in too many stuffs in too little time, eventually u ll burn out n lose the interest, it is also important that u shouldnt study very slow also, even that would make u lose interest,.
the mistake i made was, i was scared a lot, fearing a low score despite my preparation , i postponed my exam 2times, (almost 1.5 months)
i was saturated at the end,if i had postponed it more i feel my score would hav dropped,,

so make sure u read it in a right way,,
all the very best..

Smile Thanks...

To complete my question. I'm reading pharmacology, I still have to read pathology (RRP), and BS (First time). I think that I can re read all a second time... but I'm not sure for is I can do that 3 times. Reading your answer makes me think that it might be possible... Right??? What do you think?

Thank you for your answer...

Default thanx a lot for the post

hey thanx a lot for dis really useful post..my prep schedule is sort of too similar to urs..actually its so similar dat its weird...
i have done kaplan 2 times bfre u world...also RR goljan... then revise approx 75% of kaplans along wit my u world (i had pretty weak basics)...just finished with my u world now...
i planning to give step in a sm 20-25 days...
i have read FA then very first time along with u world only...
it would be really great of u if u could help me out with few ques:

1.how should i strngthen pharma..i struggled with it in u world..and kaplan of pharm infact seem like cramming..which i struggle at?

2.i score near to 60-61% in u world but did took do LOT of notes...so do u think its a big problem or m i doing fine?...considering im aiming for smthing like your score..

3.what would u suggest i shud concentrate on now?

thanx a lot for dis post...its really feels good to see sm1 scoring so high wit prep schedule like yours

hi..
i guess v both studied in a similar pattern,,
1...
even i felt the same wit pharmac..i started my uworld wit phrmac n the very first block i took was quite depressing, i was quite shocked to see so much of importance being given to side effects n drug interactions,i was expecting more on mech of action of drugs ,...well its probably cos v come across side effects n drug interactions very often in practice it is tested so much..
n there is no easy way to study phrmac,,
n even i suck at cramming stuffs, n i had a hard time doing it,,
one way is,after i was done reading it twice, i concentrated to topics which i found more volatile..
eg..side effects n drug interactions of
* hypo lipidemic drugs
* antihypertensive -"-
* antipsychotic n antidepressants
* anti cancer drugs

i spent some time on these topics every now n then;,a quick glance reguraly is enough,,i spent about half an hour on these topics some 2-3 times in my last one month,,ie...1/2 hour in between my regular schedule..

2..
well if u havent taken a lotta notes its ok. its not a time to look back,,
wat matters is that u remember the important stuffs from u world.
just make sure the next time u read first aid u concentrate a bit more, cos it has covered a lotta uworld suffs in it,,

3.take an nbme first,
atleast an offline form..n in it if u get some 25 or less questions wrong from the 200, then its a score of 240,,n a score of 235 to 240 one mth before exam is good enough i guess,,
n around 245 just one week before is wat one needs if aiming for 245-250..
n bout studies,,,
n 322 questions in exam r not on 300 different concepts,, it gets narrowed to a few set of sections in the book,, n while doing nbme one ll know in which field one is weak(weak not necessarily means u get those questions wrong, taking a lotta time in answering is also weakness,eg..questions on statistics, pedegree charts n acid base diff n A-a partial pressure diff,,these take a lotta time to analyse so practice on them a lot)
time saved can be used to think on tough questions n to go through doughtful ones..
so one should make sure not only to get a question right, but get it right in time..
..

n u can spend time on high yield topics n tables in kaplan n a good revision of first aid..
all the very best

hi
goljan is a really good book,,its never a waste of time to read it,,
just make sure u hav enough time to reaad it
for me first reading took 13-15 days(9-10 hours a day)
second reading took bout 8 days
n a third took 4 days
n ya it definatly helped me..
u ll find uworld patho a bit easy if u do goljan before,
or if u dont hav time then do kaplan patho n do the uworld paathology well,
think n decide which one suits u best

n neuro anatomy i did just kaplan book n videos,,n for pictures
i reffered a few atlas,,(sylvius neuroanotomy n 3D stereoatlas)
to get a good picture of all the cross sections,,u ll get a soft copy of these in the net..
good luck

Thank you dr Hanush,
do you advice doing Q bank systematically or subject wise?
how long it takes from you to revise each kaplan book?
did you do Goljan audio? do you recommended it?
Thank you very much, happy new year

i did uworld subject wise,,i felt it better that way,,one subject in a short interval of time, it helps reinforce the concepts better than doing it system wise,
n i took notes in a separate book, not in the FA..at the end i had notes from uworld in a subject wise way, so i glanced thro it once while doing a kaplan revision.
..
n i read everything in goljan for the first 2 readings, not just the margins.
for the 3rd revision i read the important ones which i had highlighted during my 1st reading..n i didnt hav time for goljan audios, but i hav heard that they r good, so do go thro them if u hav time

n for the last mth of exam, i hav explained in an earlier post,,
here it is:-
take an nbme first,
atleast an offline form..n in it if u get some 25 or less questions wrong from the 200, then its a score of 240,,n a score of 235 to 240 one mth before exam is good enough i guess,,

n time i took for my 1st reading of kaplan n for the 3rd r explained in earlier posts,
my second reading took
around 5 days for each subject in kaplan.

please Dr. Dhanush,
one last thing, sorry for bothering you with my questions, you are our doctor star today !!

How long it takes from you to read each questions and write down the notes?, if had a question wrong did you go to review it in kaplan book or in first aid?

How many questions you were covered daily with explanations??
Did you like Kaplan Q bank?
Thanks alot buddy,

dont be scared, ya goljan s volatile n it feels lik hell sometimes wen one can remember stuffs from it,,but dont get your hope down,,just go through important tables n stuffs repeatedly..
its quite a big book n its tough to make notes of whole book..n its better to read it in book than notes cos one ll hav a pictorail memory of the pages wen done in book..get a highlighter n mark the important stuffs in it while u read so that during revision u can concentrate on it,,
n remember to memorize the disease presentations n any peculiar stuffs bout it,it ll be tested in the exam..especially tables ,read everything given in the tables n try to remember the any peculiar disease associations given in it,,i hav given a set of tables in an earkier post go through it n try to read them well,,

Thanks alot buddy,
hi
i did bout 60- 65 questions a day,,(12-13 hours a day)
those 2 months were the time i worked the hardest during my preparation..
a lot of explaination is given in uworld, most of the time its enough,, occasionally i wen thro kaplan wen i was not sure wat i read,,,
i wrote down a lotta notes n it definatly helped a lot..

i didnt do kaplan q bank..i didnt hav time
n most of the time wat matters is how well u read a question bank than how many,,,for me i felt uworld was enough,,n i hav heard its much better than kaplan qbank.

u ll lov the explainations in uworld, n while taking notes take it down as flow charts n diagrams ,, revision of it ll be easier than plain old text...

Please Dhanush,

Here is what I am doing, please give me your opinion of what should I do to improve and what the wrong thing I am doing: my plan so far is:

1.I did only one read of kaplan notes which I forget about 70%now.

2.But I am doing now systemic review with first aid and USMLE RX Q bank( like doing cardiovascular, respiratory.. etc) and I notate essential notes in a separate copybook.

3.at same time I bought UW and I use its explanation as a learning tool (randomwise) from time to time but AAhhhhh it takes so much time from me to take notes from the explanations..but I am on 12th percentile now only 36% correct and did not finish UW ( keep in your mind that I only read the material for one read and for sure I did not digest all the materials well and I am afraid if I will go and revise the kaplan subjects again I will not have time to do many questions which are very very important.....do you advise me to forget questions now and just concentrate on concepts from notes and Goljan??

4.At the same time I hear Goljan audio, and I am reading with it his rapid review Goljan book

5.From time to time I jump to kaplan notes book in any discipline and read a half or full chapter as a second revision( because I only read them once , as I did not do second revision of Kaplan notes because I want to do questions so they can help me to understand the material better like a learning tool.

I feel stucked and I am taking so much damn time, there is something wrong in my preparation

Please what should I do now to change what you think it is wrong now in my plan
Should I forget questions right now and just concentrate on Kaplan notes and Goljan by revisisng them? then return back to questions?

when you take notes from UW explanation? do you spend so much damn time or writing, (my hands hurt).
Thank you so much for helping me out:

hi, medicalsection;
emm..first of all,(its just my opinion)
i feel u r not yet ready for qbank..
ya , uworld is a learning tool but only wen ur basics r good,
i guess u hav forgot a lot from 1st reading, dont worry it happens to all of us..
upon that u r doing uworld in random mode..
so either switch to subject wise in uworld n revise the subjects along wit the qbank,or first finish off the revision n be perfect in basics n then switch to uworld..
wat i feel is, kaplan is for getting our basics straight, n uworld is for a detailed understanding of the subject..
if u done wit kaplan well u ll get around 55-60% in uworld..
so without firm basics if u switch to uworld u ll feel it tougher n it ll take a lotta time.,

one other reason y u r taking lotta time....
an lot of things r given in kaplan already as u hav forgotten a lot of it as u say u hav,u feel a lotta things to be new in uworld in u might be taking down a lottta notes,so ..
if i were in your position i would get my basics polished before jumping to uworld,,
without it if u continue uworld then there is is a fair chance that u ll be wasting a lotta time n stressing out our mind ,,
n one more thing,
work out a good schedule n stick to it,
from wat i read above , i guess u r doing usmle rx , u world FA n kaplan all at the same time,,by doing tis u ll be losing track of time easily n u ll stressed out a lot,
n,so do one thing at a time,
u can mix up subjects at the end during final revision, not now,,
there ll be one more problem if u do it this way,,
lets say u hav read a new concept in physiology today, ,,
n days later u suddenly remember it n u get some doubts, n want to look it up..,n if u study tis way u ll be totally confused where u hav read it,whether it was in FA, kaplan, uworld or rx..
i feel doing it sequentially helps better in remembering stuffs, but then again its my opinion,
some ppl do mix up subjects right in the 1st reading n they r pretty comfortable in remembering them,,
its upto u wat to do,i hav just said wat i felt.
remember kaplan is a foundation,if its firm it ll help u in better understanding n remembering uworld in also improve your pace..
good luck

n ya taking down notes from uworld takes lotta time, but v dont hav a choice..try to cover more matter wit less text, flow charts n rough diagrams r a good way of reducing text

Default kaplan notes

Please Dr Dhanush, you said in your post that read kaplan notes for the first time for 8 days for each subject, did you watch the video with it, how did you finish each kaplan book so quickly in 8 days, what was you way in studying the notes, since each book is huge and requires time more than that...

Thank you so much

hi,
i watched kaplan videos only for behavioral science..
i didnt watch it for the rest,,
n my target each day for studying was 70 pages in kaplan..
not every subject went at the same pace..
physio was quick,i could do some 75 pages a day.
slowest was micro/immuno, especially bacteriology,,,i could do some 45- 50 pages in bacteriology..
BS required videos n it went very slow 40 pages wit videos in a day..
pace also depends on whether one is still a student studying in 2 or 3 yr or is already a graduate,
being a graduate one would know a lotta concepts already n need comparatively less time than a student would need,
n lotta things matter how long v sit , how long v actually concentrated,,
i studied almost 9-10 hours a day.
n approx i took around 8 days per subject..
initially its tough to sit for long hours at a stretch, but gradually one gets used to it,,

n i am pretty lazy,n it was very very tough for me to study for long hours,,well then, the fear of an "uncertain future" kicked in n it made me study
n ya , its the interest in the subject that makes us study well but its definitely the fear of wasting precious time that makes us study at a better pace..

Hello, Dr. Dhanush

Congrats on your amazing step 1 score.....

I'm an IMG from india as well..preparing for step 1...

but my prep's not going too well..as i'm taking a really long time just getting thru kaplan videos and notes 1x.....

b/c lot of distractions in between...

i had a couple of q's... did you do kaplan videos and notes 3x?

and also how long did it take u to read goljan rr... did youread the whole thing? I'm getting freaked out just llooking at it... is it sufficient to just listen to the audios 2x?

how many nbmes did u do in ur total prep of 7 months? which are the good predictive ones of your score on step 1?? are all of them same?

did u do any other qbank besides uworld? i'm planning to do usmle rx? is it good?

thanks...hope i din ask too many q's lol

hi, i did kaplan videos only for behavioral science..i felt that was enough,,
no need to watch all the videos if u r good at the basics,,its the same thing explained in the videos, not too much new information is given in the videos, but behavioral science videos r a must as here in India much stress isn't given to it,,
n bout goljan , yes its a pretty big book and its pretty volatile, but it ll help a lot not just for step 1 but also for ck,,
o took about 18 days for 1x...second reading 9 days..third 5days..
ya i read kaplan 3x....i hav posted the exact schedule in which i read,u can go through,
plan yor schedule, everyone is unique, some things tough for others might be easy for u,n vice verse
n dont worry u ll do well...keep in mind that u dont waste a lotta time ,,pick up yor pace, make a time table n stick to it
i took 3 nbme...7,11 n 12..
i felt all r pretty much the same ,, but some say the newer ones r good predictors, 13 has come out,,so its better to stick to 11,12 n 13.if time permits go for more,
uworld is enough , be perfect in it before u go for an other q bank..
n ya, usmle rx is the second best...
make notes of important stuffs form uworld which r not there in kaplan notes..
n sorry foe the spelling mistakes, i typed it in a hurry..

hi sharma,
well that happens to everyone of us,in fact m going through that phase in my preparation of step 2,its better to take a day or two off n then get back to studies,
well UWSA are a lot easier that the actual exam, they overestimate yor final score,so its better to avoid them, its better to take another nbme if u hav time,..
questions from nbme dont actually repeat in the actual exam,at the most u can get 2 or 3 questions exactaly out of the nbme s...i got one from 7...
but the concepts definitely repeat, they hav limited number of concepts on which they can test us, so that ll repeat,,
so concentrate on the type of questions rather than individual ones,,,

n try not to waste a lotta time,u ll regret it later.
i some how couldnt apply for 2013 match cos of various problems,n then i realised that i ll be losing one more year n that hit hard on me,n i ended up wasting so much time,i did just nothing for months together,,emmm well i started preparing for ck just a month back,,
there r a lotta things that ll pull us back,,v hav to just keep moving forward,,,
235 is a good score, try concentrating on the parts which u find tough now,n try to recognize n correct all the silly mistakes u tend to make in the exam, that it self ll add 4 or 5 marks..
give yor exam wen u get around 245 in nbmes,,,,u ll get the score u need,,
good luck,,,

hi I wanted to ask:

1. I had initially thought that if someone is thorough with kaplan and FA, that the person would get most if not all questions correct in U world/ Nbme and the real thing. is that so?

2 for topics like anatomy, pharm, micro, path, etc. is there alot of new material in Uworld not covered in the FA and kaplan material?

3. should FA be read before the qbanks(kaplan, Uworld) or after

4. if doing the qbank subject wise, should some one do all the questions subject wise or do half qbank subject wise and half 1 bank random

5. if you had done subject wise for uworld then, wasn't doing nbme exams really difficult because they were asking random mixed questions, while you were used to seeing questions subject wise.
6. after completion of uworld what did you do? read FA or revise the uworld qs?

thanks for your help

hi
1.no there is a lotta new stuff in uworld that isnt covered in kaplan or fa.
no ,v wont get all the answers correct just cos one is good at fa and kaplan.
uworld is a learning tool it doesnt matter how many questions one gets right, wat matters is how well v study from it,its there for us to learn the pattern of questions, any new information, time managemant n performing under stress,,
2.yes a lotta new stuff for patho,.....a little for pharmac n anatomy,n almost none for micro
3.its a personal choice, either way v gotta read it atleast twice,
if v give one reading before uworld,..uworld ll be a bit easy.
if v reaad it after uworld then v ll know which parts to stress in FA.
4.again its a personal choice,if v do it subject wise it ll be easier to assimilate new stuffs one subject at a time,as i told uworld was a learning tool for me not an assessing one,...it be easier to take notes too, one subject , all at one place,..as concepts ll be repeated,i felt reinforcement of the concepts was better,.
5.it ll be a lil bit tough to adjust to random wise questions,v can take UWSA exam which come wit uworld to get used to that ,,,,UWSA is not a good assesment exam for the final score as it over estimates our score, but its a good too for everyting else,to get used to ramdom wise questions,n time management,..just one exam is wnough v ll get used to it pretty soon
6.after uworld first reading, i revised it once n then read FA
the entire time table which i followed is in detail at the start of the thread,u can hav a look...make yor own time table which suits yor wat of studying,
good luck..

hi
it k,dont worry now,
u can go through important tables in goljan,,the page numbers of which i hav given in one of the earlier posts,,,,
n do go through first aid,u can also find a lot of slides at the end,,,
the photos at the end of it r good enough,,if u want to see more then u can go through goljan slides.
n read first aid once n give one of the nbmes.then u ll get an idea of the level of yor preparation n then u can work on the areas which u r weak...
as u hav 2 months its better not to read an entire new book lik goljan now..better is first aid twice,n revise kaplan n notes from uworld n... simultaneously work on a couple of nbmes,,....decide wats good for u,,
n good luck...
n dont panic ,,goljan is not a must to get a good score, i know many friends of mine who read just kaplan for pathology n hav good a good score..
i hope u hav done the pathology part of uworld well, that ll compensate for not reading goljan/..

Hi, I wanted to know that what do you think is the best solution for memory problems, for ex I usually go through a topic (micro for ex) in about 5-7 days giving 10 hrs a day then I would do qs from a qbank like usmlerx or kaplan, but the problem is that after i complete that topic and move on to the next i forget a whole lot of details and facts relating to the old topic( like in micro I would forget certain toxins produced by bacteria or stains used to grow some bugs). And this gives me a lot of anxiety because I am hoping that when I do Uworld or other questions I hope I will be able to recall those details to help answer questions...Any thoughts or suggestions for recall/memory? and does uworld or nbme test a whole lot of recall?? thanks!

hi
for the slides,i just read FA..i didnt hav much time to go through any ohter stuff for slides,...
well its better to go through more number of slides if time permits,..in many questions just the picture clinches the diagnosis n if u hav seen it once before it makes it much more easier....
i hav heard bothe goljan slides (audio not needed) n the kaplan ones r good enough..if u hav time go through any one of them once..if u dont hav time then FA n uworld slides in the question stem r enough..
well they dont test much of the anatomy in the exam ,just the basics r enough, the only thing which they ask in detail is neuro anatomy, so be perfect in it,the rest of the questions r just basics,..n even i didnt hav any good book for anatomy slides , i just relied on the uworld slides,it has a few,,,there r a lot of atlas for anatomy and histology slides but they r too vast n m not sure spending time on them ll be of much help,as histo not tested much in the boards..
n ya questions on ethics r much tougher on the boards than uworld,..refer Conrad Fischer's book on ethics (Kaplan) there are some 100 cases at the end, I just went through a few...questions on ethics needs a lot of practice,do discuss the questions u hav come across wit yor friends.the more questions u read in it the better u ll get..
atlest take one online nbme after all yor preparation ,2 is much better to see yor imprpvemrnt.
online r better in the sense that u ll get used to the time constrain n get used to working under exam conditions..
extended one s better, the dont give explainations but they do give the questions that u got wrong,,u can later look for the answers for those on any of the forums.(under nbme spoilers)
take one offline n next 2 online ..
n it doest matter how much u scored on uworld wat matters is how much one learns form it,,,n 63 is a pretty good score, dont wirry.good luck..
sorry for typing errors..

first of all dont be tensed,,everyone of us goes through the same problems,,its how v cope wit they that is inportant,,the more v panic the more v tend to forget..
make a list of all the toxins ,special stains, n all the enzymes/chemical tests of different organisms..go through them wen ever u hav time,,the same goes to any side effects/drug reactions of pharmacology.
just spend 5 min a day on them, just in a week or so u ll be remembering all the stuffs..
n ya they test both recall and understanding, on the boards,
be confident,prepare well.
good luck

thanks for the feedback, very helpful post , just wanted to address aome other concerns...

I am doing the kaplan and uworld qbanks now, and wanted to know, that once they are completed what to do next?

Do I...

1. add the points from qbank to FA and revise only the questions that came up on the q bank
2.or do I need to revise whole of FA and the appropriate points from the qbank??
3. when to take nbme after revisions of the FA or immediately after qbanks?

also what exactly are you supposed to learn from the qbank? is it that the whole point of the qbank is it highlight the most tested/ high yield/ important topics which are likely to show up on the real thing? And if this is the case, then should someone just focus on the qbank material only.

and what should be done about the topics that the qbanks didnt go over? should someone skip revising them? are those things low yield and sholud those things be omitted from the study plan??

thanks!

Dear dhanush,

I extremely need your advice and advices from other friends as well,
I do not have much time left to waste to sit for exam, but I do not know why the hell from time to time some bad thoughts came to my mind and and I felt so lonely and lost and let me surrender and not able to continue...hence wasting many days..

Please did you feel like that or it just me?? what did you do to keep pushing and fighting any bad thoughts that may interrupt your study..??? how you always keep your spirit high???

Another question please, how did you manage your time of studying?? what is your way in counting pure hours of studying???

Thank you very much
