First Aid First Aid 2012; members first impressions

Just got the FA2012. After a quick glance, I like the new color images. Unlike FA2010, those images are put together and integrated with corresponding text. However, texts are smaller. Not sure if that is because I am familiar with FA2010. Those are just my first impressions.

Default First Aid '10 and '11 way better than First Aid '12

My first aid 2012 came a few days ago and here are my thoughts.

Advantages: Its colored, they added lines/did a better job of aligning words and facts. Pictures are integrated throughout. After flipping around, I noticed 1 new fact so far. 90 percent of the material seems the same as the 2011 edition so far...

Disadvantages: There is barely any room to write notes! The previous first aid editions had more room to add notes. This one seems like they utilized each space in the book. Plus the blue/grayish color tab on the top of every page didn't make things easier because that took even more space! The book is a few mm smaller in width so you can't even hole punch it (because it cuts through the text!). Also, this edition REALLY REALLY REALLY seems like its being used for advertisement purposes lol. Literally every title page had USMLERX.com on it and when I first opened the book, I found a little card by "falcon review". Also, some of the errata from the 2011 edition was not fixed in the 2012 edition.

Overall, the first aid is a great series. I'm not trying to bash First aid because I am using it, however I am using the first aid 2011 because it has more room to add notes to and because you can actually hole punch it without going through words and because its not an advertisement book like the 2012 edition. I bought the first aid 2012 with the intention of using it but after being heavily disappointed by the things I mentioned in the "disadvantages" part, I decided to stick to 2011.

That is disappointing to read, I was just gonna order it online but I don't think I will anymore. How many pages is the book this time? The OP said the text is smaller but apparently spaces are smaller too :/

Behavioral starts from p50 and it ends at 650(keyassociations/abbreviations). Yes the text is slightly smaller. Yes there are spaces but not as much space as I had in FA 2011.

Honestly don't be disappointed. If you want to order it, then do so but keep the following things in mind.

1) If you took notes in a previous edition of FA, fixed the errors in the previous edition of FA, then honestly there is no need to order this one.

2) If you didn't take notes in a previous edition of FA, then by all means order your 2012 FA. However please don't get it hole punched because it will cut right through the text. Get the spine cut and put that spiral thing on the book.

3) get a lot of sticky notes since you'll be using those more, since there isn't as much room in this book as we'd like. So take notes on sticky notes, and then you can post them on the FA 2012

4) Don't let the advertisements get to your head. It bothered me a lot though lol.

hope this helps

650 pages without the index? FA2011 abbreviations ends at page 596, that's over 50 pages of content!

I have the 2010 version, my exam is 10 months from now, I only copied stuff from kaplan lecture notes to it and copying them again won't bother me at all. In fact, I want a clean version because a lot of what I copied was useless.

I'll have to order a new one, 11 or 12, don't know which yet.

Thanks a lot for your reply, it helped (:

Sorry i made a mistake. The key associations/equations end at p 598. From page 599 is the "top rated review resources". The ending has an abbreviations section which I accidentally included in the pages. So yes FA 2012 has info from p.47 to p.598!

Also keep in mind that they made some of the diagrams slightly bigger lol. I kid you not I only found 1 new addition so far. If someone finds other things, that will be wonderful but I doubt its something that I probably havent added from my kaplan videos

Also keep in mind that they dont include the "images" section in the total number of pages of the first aid 2010/2011. So add 30 pages to the total number of pages in the fa 2010/2011

With the intention of using the new FA2012 with UWorld, I un-binded the book and punched three holes to add more pages for the notes. Those holes did cut through some titles on the top of each section but only first one or two letters (not the text that follows the title). So I guess it is not that bad. It does have USMLERx ad's at the end of each section and less empty spaces to add notes.

Since you haven't used FA yet, you can get the 2012 version. Just make sure that if you unbind it, to NOT get it holepunched. Instead get the spiral thing put on it. Also, you will be adding a lot of sticky notes to it because there is little(not much) room to write notes in it. But you'll be fine!

Thanks medstudent007......got some doubts

firstly s it necessary to unbind it and get it in the form of an spiral book? like does every1 does that n if yes then why?????? (any specific purpose)

second- do i need to worry about the content of the book compared to previous editions????? the authenticity n reliability?????

thanks in advance...really appreciate ur response

No its not necessary. You can use the first aid book as it is. The reason people get it unbinded and spiraled up/hole punched is because 1) its easier to flip through and 2) easier to add notes.

The content is practically the same. Medicine doesnt change and even if they add a few new facts here and there, you probably will come across it in kaplan videos or questions anyways.

no problem

First Aid FA 2011 versus FA 2012

I have FA 2011 with me, do you think I should buy FA 2012? are there many differences between the 2?

You can view the 2012 edition here:
http://www.amazon.com/First-Aid-USML.../dp/0071776362

Just click on "click to look inside" sign above the cover photo and you can give the book a look. I think it's worth upgrading.

Got my copy today.......

Couldn't see much difference as was using fa 2010 before....

It's better that they have put pictures along with theory,,,,makes it a bit easier.....

If you are using an older version you are absolutely fine.....if you are starting now.....go for 2012......

I think 2010 edition was super and is a classic....2011 sucked....2012 is a bit better............

Default Just got my 2012 now

As some already has stated it is in color and the pics are where they should be At least I found it much more helpful with having the pics in the text, less flipping to do while reading.

Some has also mentionned post-its and sticky notes which is the way I have studied, it really is helpful. I have also added some pages which I basically just put inbetween without unbinding the book.

I would definitly use the 2012, along with some Kaplan and others it is a nice way to get all into one book.

PS: The adds, that's where the sticky notes goes

Default how to add kaplan to first aid

hello seniors, i am new to this forum need you guidance

i am done with anatomy and physiology but it took me more time than expected. so previously i was thinking of doing kaplan thrice or atleast twice, but know as it is taking more time, i am thinking of adding important points in FIRST AID.
so my question is
1) what the best possible method to add notes in FA ...
a) add notes after each chapter i finsih from kaplan .....
b) add notes while doing FA for the first time and till that time have completely done with kaplan.

and one more thing how does Doctor's in training help you with FA.
