Kaplan Medical Kaplan Qbank - Not liked by US grads

I want to use a qbank with my first read through the lecture notes and am not sure what qbank to use. I have about 8-9 months until my exam so I have time to do a lot of questions.

It seems that on the forums where US grads all talk about USMLE they all seem to really hate Kaplan Qbank. They think you waste too much time doing low yield questions and having to do questions on random facts.

They also said it only really tests your recall ability and not your concepts.

They seem to like to do Uworld twice and usmlerx if you need more questions.

However over on the IMG forums it seems liek everyone does Qbank first and then Uworld.

Anybody who recently did Qbank in the past few months and took the exam have any input on it?

Bought it ONLY because it was cheaper than UW and I needed ~3 months of it, so I figured I might as well have paid for Kaplan ($200 for a year at the time). Started somewhere in September, took my test in mid-early Dec, got my score yesterday.

Ended up with a 253.

YES, it does have very specific random facts and the questions are slightly different from those on the real exam, but I felt like I was prepared for absolutely anything they could ask.

Disclaimer: it was not my only source of questions, my prep was spread over a long period of time and I did questions usmleRX, from an "offline" version of UW from 2007 as well as books like FA Q&A, Kaplan Qbook and Pre-Test but Kaplan Qbank what was I used for my final review

So.. take your pick... most people do seem to prefer UW. If I were in your case I would probably buy Kaplan Qbank (still $200 for a year I think!) and then at the end just pay for a month of UW or something

hey,

I did kaplan qbank first, for about 3 months. did something like 60% of it and then just switched over to Uworld 4,5 days ago.

although im only 4,5 days and about 200 questions in Uworld, I have to say that I feel it is actually easier than kaplan qbank!
(I may be the only one who feels this way, everyone says Uworld is harder than Qbank)

but to me, the questions are easier to understand than kaplan, which used all sorts of funny ways to describe things, whereas Uworld uses the descriptions in FA and kaplan books.

So what im saying is that so far it looks to me as Uworld is easier :S
maybe kaplan prepared me for Uworld? Although my score in Qbank was not so hot, 60%.

Don't know if this was any help, may have just confused you even more haha

Thanks for the input so far!!
Saving money by paying for Uworld for one month doesn't really matter to me because I am going to buy all my qbanks for a year long subscription anyway just incase.

The question becomes is it better to start with Uworld to learn important concepts while you read to help guide you during your study period?
Then move onto other qbanks and then finally return to Uworld at the end to seal the deal.

Are you finding it helps you solidify a concept after reading it?
Or is it just asking random recall facts?

Some people are saying its more factual recall versus actually applying concepts.

I did about 55% of kaplan q bank and then stopped. If you read and understand your facts, then kaplan q bank will be not so tough. If you have time, please do it because it is still a question bank and some questions test you on knowledge you may not recollect properly, or a fact that you may not understand the right way.

BUt UW is gold. Do it atleast twice.
