Exam-Results Trickster Step 1 Score 262/89!

262/89

yay!

UWSA 1 and 2 week before the exam: >265
NBME 12 (I think 2 weeks before the exam): 269
Uworld: First try 81%. Revised most of the incorrect ones. Did the bank in about 7 days but that was because I was done with studying, and I only did uworld that week without text-book revision.
First Aid: Twice. Once while doing Kaplan. Then once again last week before exam.

Prep time 6 months, the first three months on and off, then I picked up speed. Did only the biochem DVD. No Goljan audio. Read most of Goljan's Rapid Review during the first couple of months and in hindsight it was an absolute waste. I know most people love RR, but I personally found it hard to read and basically felt compelled to give it a shot because of all the rave reviews. I gave it up before completing it, and switched to BRS patho, a blessing.
The last two months I worked really really hard (approximately 10 hours a day with only short breaks for lunch and tea), and the last month was the most important with revision of forgettable material plus the uworld qbank plus one nbme plus the the two UW self-assessments.

Anyway...the hard work paid off.

Default Congrats

What textbooks are you referring to?
Did you do kaplan Qbanks? Did you read any KLNs ?
How was the exam questions? Are there any questions that are either tricky or confusing or impossible to answr? What kind of Qs are they?
Thanks.

Congratulations on the AMAZING score!

How was the step? What did it focuss heavily on and what subjects should up less than you expected?

I felt the exam was somewhat vague and the questions not nearly as well thought out as the ones in the uworld qbank. In fact, I'd say too many questions tested hard factual recall rather than strategic thinking...seriously. I know most people report otherwise so I was pretty horrified at the sort of questions that kept popping up. Then again I ended up scoring just fine so I suppose many of those questions were experimental?

Anyway, my exam was kind of heavy on anatomy and genetics. The latter was not an issue for me but the anatomy nearly made me cry. There was a lot of easy pathology and microbiology, a few wtf questions that were about a billion lines long and made very little sense. Probably experimental.

At the end of the 7 blocks I was pretty depressed and thought I'd screwed it up big time....I was wrong. weeeeeee.

So,are u saying the exam is mostly recall?and if i just look at goljan RR not too thorough and do the UW for patho will it be ok? and how was Biostat? what do u recommend for anatomy? as many students says anatomy was clueless!!!again congratulation for such a great score.I appreciate it

Biostats was tested quite a bit! About 4 or 5 questions in nearly each block! Nothing too hard, but you need to be comfortable with sensitivity, specificity, odds ratios etc. I thought Uworld had some good biostats questions.

I honestly have no idea what you can do about anatomy. Even now I'm not sure what i'd have done differently. Just do the Anatomy Kaplan lecture notes at the very least.

The exam had many questions that required pure recall rather than reasoning, and Uworld definitely had better quality questions in my opinion. I wouldn't say my exam was harder than Uworld, only different enough to put me a bit off balance.

congrats on a great score. i agree goljan is such a difficult book to read!
is it ok if i do brs patho well..and uworld ofcourse? and not do goljan at all. considering tht i have done robbins basis in med school..so my concepts r pretty clear.
and i even find FA very boring..is it absolutely necessary?

Congratz!!!
Since you are not sure of what to do for anatomy.. What did you do for Anatomy? Just FA and Kaplan notes?
Iam so glad someone who didn't use golgian got really good score. I hate Golgian RR and I have been doing all the other kaplan notes. Did you do the kaplan LN for Path as well? or did you just do BRS? I have done Big Robbins for General Path and BRS for systems back when I took the courses. Not sure how much of it I can recall now.. So any suggestions will be helpful!
Thanks

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been working and haven't really had a lot of spare time.

Anyway to answer your questions:

1) Anatomy: I did kaplan+first aid. Even though the anatomy questions were rather difficult on the exam, I got a star in the subject, probably because I was able to narrow down to two options and take a smart guess. I don't recommed reading other books for anatomy unless you have a lot of time! Just do whatever is there in first aid and kaplan at the very least and you'll probably manage to answer most of the questions...

2)Last month of studying I used first aid, medessentials (a rather overlooked book, which I found very helpful, especially for neuro), and did uworld.

3)Goljan sucks. You can ace the patho without goljan, especially if you've done basis and have good concepts. I was good at patho in school, and I used robbins basis....so, yea....Goljan's appeal is a bit of a mystery to me! Stick to BRS patho+webpath (I didn't do kaplan LN for patho, so I don't know if it's good enough) if you have never really had trouble with the subject. However, if you weren't good at patho before, I'm not sure how useful BRS would be.

Good luck guys.

Smile how many times did you read all the books

I know that you said that you read FA two times... but, what about the other books??? Did you read just one time??

Thank you

P.S. Great score... congratulations..

I actually did Big robbins for path 1 and BRS and webpath for Path 2. So I am guessing I should just do that again....

Congrats, great score!! This just made me more confident that I'm on the right track in pathology. I had read Robbins pathology in med school cover to cover at least 2x since pathology is the moooost difficult subject of my school (harder than all subjects with high mortality rates). I also found myself confused as to why so many people recommend goljan. I tried it once and after one day i quit. I went back to BRS and I really think it has sufficient information. Anyway, good luck on the upcoming steps

Hey Trickster nicely done! amazing score.

Question:
What would you say was the most important resource, or revision you made during your last weeks of prep.

Congrats again.

There is a new scoring system I believe.. You need a much higher 3 digit score to get the same 2 digit score as before

it is very unlikely that he got 95 on the new 2 digit scale (you need to score over 280 to get 95 now), so maybe he got a score that corresponds to 95 on the old 2 digit scale.

well the poster of this topic posted this thread 4 weeks ago ... the person I am talking about received his result in February I am sure of that , so he must have done the exam using the new 2 digit scale , logically !
