Smile Step 1 experience 254 (88)

hello everyone!!
first of all I'd like to thank everyone on this forum great ppl great help just wanted to post my experience and hope tht it helps!
first of all iam an img from pakistan (LMDC) graduated in 2011...started my prep in April-May 2011 took abut 8 months
study resources:
Kaplan for all subjects except patho for which I used Goljan 3 reads in total.....first read took 4 months i was thorough and tried to memorize imp stuff abut 6-8 hrs a day sundays off....used kaplan video for biochem physio behav and biostats........2nd read took 3 months (abut 8 hrs a day) with uworld subject wise and offline(scored about 75%)....3rd read 1 month (abut 10-12 hrs) a day.....along with nbmes 1-7 offline.....nbme 11 online 254 7 days before exam...took fred 1 day before the exam 92%........took my exam on 28th dec exam was similar to nbme 3 5 and 6.similar concepts asked....time management was imp...
some important points
1.the single most important resource in my view is nbme tests similar concepts are asked and even some questions and pictures were repeated try understanding concept behind each question
2. i didnt do FA just some physio and biochem but still kaplan was my main resource didnt like FA.
3.Golgan is nt a must at all...uworld is sufficient fr patho depends on how much time u have if u have time do golgan if nt then skip it.

will answer any question if u have....

Congrats on the great score?

You say the test was similar to nbmes. So is it fair to say path was the biggest focus, and that biochem, neuro and immuno were of little focus? Ive taken nbme form 3 and that was the impression i got.

patho was the most asked subject...bt i had plenty of immuno too neuro and biochem were nt tht much...as ull give more nbmes ull se tht each nbme focuses on some sbjects more...like i remeber nbme 5 and 6 had more of neuro and pharm...so in the real exam theres no hard and fast rule u can get more from any subject bt over all the exam was balanced

Congrats!!!
Thanks for giving useful advice.
My exam is in 2 months and I am trying to follow Goljan. So, I want to know if its advisable to know everything in Goljan or just the important points he explained in the audio? For example, there are 2-3 pages listing all the organisms causing pneumonia, lung infection...can it be skipped? And how important are chapters of childhood dz, environmental pathology, special senses,... etc...
Thanks.

Goljan at the Falcon live lectures himself says that Rapid Review was written for step 1, 2 and 3... and is insanely overkill for step 1 alone.

hey people my kaplan qbank average is a 68% right now after 1150 questions. i need to take the nbme comp exam in 2 weeks and dont know if a 68 % on kaplan qbank is a good indication of being prepared for both the nbme exam and step 1. would really appreciate some feedback

try to learn the margin notes...u can not cram every thing in golgan...focus on main points only....following audio is good enuff...u can skip all microorganisms as ull be doing them from FA or kaplan so no need...enviormental pathology is quite imp....better to focus on things asked in uworld

biostats was similar to uworld....and i think u shud do its uworld twice or thrice...after reading kaplan once.....in anatomy neuro was heavily tested...some muscle attachments and mostly nerve injuries...histo was least asked...not worth reading the 150 pages of kaplan fr it...just have good grip of collagen cytoskeletal elements and resp epi types....
