Unhappy Failed step 1...sucks

ya i wrote is 2 times already. 1st time was 149/52 and then i took kaplan course and studied hard but surprisingly i still got 149/67. My question is how come the 3 digit is same as before but the 2 digit is different. i used this table http://www.usmle.org/transcripts/sco...tml#step1exams even tho that table is valid till sep2011. The 2nd attempt was in dec 2011. shouldnt the 3 digit be higher @least? doesnt make sense and plus the scores are bad i just dont feel like doing anything.

Look at it this way... It's better to retake it than to have a low usmle score and be stuck with it. From where I'm standing, you still have a chance of getting a high grade.

Starting Oct 2011, they changed the 3-digit and 2-digit scheme. For example, before that, 140 is 99. Now, from what I read in this forum, 140 is roughly 90.

By the way, did you do usmleworld? Where do you think your preparation lack? That's a place to start.

Anyway, if you feel like taking a break first and reconnect with your friends, that would be better. Don't force yourself to dive into studying again. It's good to recuperate for a while.

ya i m talking a break now..but i want to know what is conversion starting Oct 2011. so like u said a 140 was 99 and now a 90?that doesnt make sense even if they do change it shouldnt be that different. From the link i posted a 149 is approx 52 or 53 and i got 52. 2nd attempt i still got 149 but the 2 digit is 67. But if i were to use the table (lets say) a 2 digit of 67 should be around 173ish. that doesnt make sense to me . Or maybe they made an error and used my 1st attempt marks...hmm

Yeah, I know... It doesn't make sense. Don't think about the 2-digit score too much though. They only send the program directors the 3-digit score, so the new scheme won't make much of a difference.

Yep. Sorry, my mistake. Before, it was 240 = 99.

did u give an nbme before this exam? what was ur score? (when you took it the second time)
what were ur prep materials apart from the kaplan course.. (uworld/qbank etc)
did u take 7wks or 14-16 weeks?

if its happened twice.. maybe u need to change something ur doing...some pattern that ur not recognizing.

i know it might be too early for you... so take a break but then u cud try to do this...

(i failed the first time too. hvnt taken my exam yet.. but took an nbme end december and it predicted a score of 220)

this is what i am doing..

1- KAPLAN---revise the notes/videos that u already have.. read thru the margin notes etc u might have taken during the lectures...

2- everyday do atleast 20-30 questions.. from Qbook etc..
(i didnt do this. just did theory. n at the end of the week. the self assessment exams.. with every subject)

3- AFTER/WITH notes... do KAPLAN QBANK... it really really sets the concepts into ur head... while doing QBank.. open up FA.. kaplan qbank has refference page nos for FA 2009-2012 (so u cud be reffering to any page) ... add the details here to FA

4-- now start your FIRST READ OF FA along with the DIT videos...
the videos go pretty fast cos uv already attended live lec.. and done notes... n Qbank.. takes about 10-15 days
(i didnt do FA read by itself earlier cos i found it very dry. after annotating with Qbank notes. i realized i had already gone thru more than half the stuff n it went much faster)

5-- TAKE A WEEK AND RE-READ FA... with all ur DIT/Kaplan/qbank notes

6- do UWORLD ... RANDOM TIMED MODE OF BLOCKS OF 46 QUESTIONS

7-- take an NBME when you reach 50% of uworld (i took the kaplan self assessment test instead of nbme)
8- FINISH UWORLD.. take another NBME

9- based on nbme score.. either go thru the wrong answers on uworld..

10-read thru FA.. n do the DIT WORKSHEETS. (they literally help you
memorize FA.. without any effort)

11- GIVE TEST

(this is my plan of action.. that i am following... right now im on 9... doing 2nd read of uworld.. n going to take 2nd nbme by end of week)
