Unhappy Lacking Motivation

Just feeling a lot bogged down with my preparation for STEP 1.feeling quite a low.has been preparing for it for the past 5 months..read KLN once, listened to their videos once(Took my notes from them)...did UWORLD 75% offline.doing my FA first time now..almost on the verge of finishing it..but suddenly i feel like i dont have the same motivation i started with.have my exam on 2nd april...subscribed for online uworld from 12th.but now scared of the fact that i am lacking motivation.plus every day becoming more paranoid that i will score very badly..just finding it difficult the journey..is it normal??or am just taking too much heat??

Its very normal what u r feeling.it happens to me too ,it happens to almost everyone ,but what matters is what r u going to do about it.
keep taking breaks ,do not let your emotions overpower.highs and lows keep happening.fight them ! but do take breaks ,find a balance that suits you. everybody is different .
don't get disheartened.never feel u r going to score low.if u study till the end .i m sure u will do good.but what is imp is u shld study till the end !
these bad feelings r part of the game ,seriously no way out of it !
But its worth it .totally totally worth it

imagine how it would be when u get an awesome score .u will be a doctor is US.
pain brings glory .so suck it up and fight !

You're not alone! Step 1 IS a difficult journey.

Let me share with you the one thing that I always think about during the prep:

How I want to ELOPE to a remote pacific island.

But then it would dawn to me that:

1. I am already in a remote pacific island.
2. I have no special someone to elope with.

So... I admit defeat and Step 1 wins.
BUT I continue to study day-in and day-out
and have dates and parties in-between.

LOL! That's just to make you laugh. But seriously, we all have that problem. If we have a poll here of the struggles of an IMG undergoing step 1 prep, the top 3 will be:

1. Raising nbme scores
2. Raising motivation
3. Raising enough cash for the next qbank

We just have to do what we can and hope for the best. Don't be too hard on yourself. You'll do great. We'll all do great.

Happens to everyone, including me.

Take a couple of days off, watch a movie, or something that motivates you. Make a list of why do you want this.

Watch this video, and think about it.

Embarrassed Dont worry

Hi bro, im on the same boat as you, been studying for 7 months now, almost gonna finish kaplan qbank, already done with uworld twice, I also feel bad and lack motivation (which sucks cause I already failed once this exam)

My exam is on march the 15th.. but you know you just gotta keep studying and working hard.. this is the last stretch and if you already put all of your effort and time in this you gotta go for the last mile and give it your best so that afterwards you dont have regrets.

i am no expert to advice... but this keeps on happening during preparations. Some of the darker days of preparations are when you know you have to study but your heart denies. I have tried experimenting in those dark days. you can just call your study quits for 3- 4 days or even a week... Involve in totally enjoying that time of yours...like movies will do good, or a short tour....
I am totally sure you will come up with something better...

any phase of preparation can be compared with 4 seasons of life: with summer comes autumn and winter follows and then comes spring... Winter or lagging motivation is something very important part of preparation time. And at that time we must remember how an ant goes through this. Ants think winter all summer and they think of summer all winter.

and yeah we must remind ourself however easy be not working hard be the pain it gives is regret. Temporary difficiulty of working hard will just cost ounces as compared to regret which will cost pounds and pounds...

Like suka said, great advice!

I like the analogy!

Since in my part of the world, there's no winter and autumn... my prep is more like 24/7 intense equatorial heat accentuated by typhoons and occasional tsunamis.

Lol! But it's basically the same like you said.

Don't give up! If you have already read Kaplan once you can do it again. I am still stuck on the first pass Kaplan for physio! So you are at a much better place than me
Try to add the important notes to FA so you dont have to go to Kaplan again and can just keep going over FA. Also if you are getting lot of mistakes in uworld its ok.. uworld is a qbank to learn.
You will do great! Just dont give up! Good luck!
