Have you tried listening to Goljan audios? You can follow his lectures along in Goljan RR, it really makes reading RR easier. You should give it a try. I was skeptic too at first. I thought the lectures are just going to slow me down but he's amazing.

If those chapters are indeed well-covered in your other subjects, then, those topics wouldn't be a problem to you in RR. I studied the genetics chapter mainly from FA and other sources and I just breezed through it in Goljan RR.

If you're not breezing through those chapters, then, maybe your other subjects haven't covered those topics in enough detail. So, you'll really need to go through it in the book to get adequate coverage.

You have another option: you can skip it for now and just go back at it when you're doing your first qbank. By then, you'll know which parts are especially important and it won't be that dull.

Anyway, that's just my opinion. Good luck!

thanks dr wiqed .. yes i m listening to the audios as well .. but thrz a lot of stuff in the book not discussed in the audi .. i wondr if thats important?? yes the lectures r quite helpful .. im pretty okaywith the stuff he discusses.
well regarding those chapters, im nt sure abt the others but FLUID AND ELECTROOLYTES is such a big turn off. do we really need all those details?? its so horrible. and breezing through is just a waste of time for me(i just look around here n there, waste my time and remember nothing!)
so r u doing the book line by line or focussing on the audio stuff?

I didn't use the Goljan audio for my first read of RR. Like I said, I thought it was going to slow me down. But recently, just out of curiosity, I listened for the first 3 hours of his lecture and I liked it. Now, I'm planning to listen to Goljan audio with RR during my 2nd read next month.

So, to answer your question, I went through it line by line. But I liked the book, so it only took me 10-14 days.

There are some parts where you just need to understand and not memorize. I think the Fluids and Electrolytes chapter is one of them. Anyway, you'll get a heavy dose of that in Physiology. If you went through physiology already, this chapter wouldn't be a problem.

What I do during my first reading with Goljan RR is that I don't pressure myself into a chapter if I don't feel like reading that topic as of the moment. Convincing/pushing myself is just a waste of energy and would just slow me down. There are even times that I skip the tables because they look so overwhelming.

BUT even if I skipped tables or chapters, I go back to read them when I feel like I want to already. In less than two weeks, I was able to finish the book.

Step 1 is a long journey. Don't be too hard on yourself if you're in your first reading. Do what makes you happy. Even if it means skipping those chapters first.
