Help Prep for USMLE in third year MBBS!

I am a medical student rit now in my 3rd year mbbs. Have decided to take on steps at the end of 4th year mbbs. but cant decide what and how to start with. i know i have 2 years still on hand, but would want some one whose already cleared step 1 during his medical school esp from pakistan, to guide me abt how to start, what material to start off with n the effectiveness of given step 1 by an IMstudent during his med schooling.

I am a MBBS student from India with 5.5 years course..basically started prep in my 4 th year (6th semester)...went through kaplan lecture notes..once in details..took me 2 months approx(with eye,ent and community medicine ward going in)..so cud put up only 5-6 hrs daily..and well didnot care a thought about 7th sem and medical schul study..then felt prepared(around september) and booked my date(well it was damn early to book a date but fear and phobia u know!!)..next gota study leave for the part 1 final mbbs exam..did not study any subject but listened to kplan dvd lectures..took my notes and points on a diary....studied for a month and gave my school exam on december and then again went back to FA..well did offline uworld while doing kaplan lectures subjectwise to get a hang of the things..my exam is on april..completed FA first read and doing uworld online(its different xperience altogether than online)..and wud have taken a break for 15 days from final year(medicine, gynae, paed, surgey) wards but for my leg..it broke and am on bed..but on the hindside got a 2 month layoff..studying for 7 months is quite ok for the prep.wish me luck...hope it helps.gud luck

well step 1 pass during medical school gives u the liberty to apply for many colleges for clinical electives and usce is becuming a neccesity for residency these days..plus u start early..so get the thing done early and since u have just passed with those subjects some knowledge are still fresh on ur mind..these are advantages though sum disadvantages remain..but grit and determination will win over everything..

Thanks a lot.well to be very honest most of the textbooks we use in our medical schools(wriiten by these indian and pakistani writers) are crap..we use them just to pass our boards and exams..well i dont derogade anyone studying them(bcoz i also studied them to pass!!)..but they help least in usmle believe me..jsut start with KLN and simultaneously listen to thier DVDS..u will see the whole concept of urs changing(at least it did for me...earlier i just used to mug up things and curse medical studies as i cud not find any rationality in them.but kaplan dvds and KLN changed it all..now if i do badly in step 1 i will have no regrets bcoz at least i rationally know sumthing and can explain sum things in basic science)..and now for this exam u have to depend on review materials..i mean goodman gilman, grays and robbins are great book but they r not needed for usmle..u need to know things they ask and so kln is the material..at first it took me time to pick up specially with KLN..but soon picked up..exact hours are not same for everyone bcoz generally i am a slow learner and take time(hope u are a quick learner)..so it depends on u..in total 6-7 months of study shud suffice....hope it helps..gud luck.

Hi! I'm not from Pakistan... and I don't even know what MBBS means although I see it a lot in this forum...

I have a suggestion. You might want to get a 1-year online subscription of Kaplan qbank. (Avash.nrs already mentioned this as part of her prep but I just want to emphasize its importance.)

Advantages:
a. As IMGs, the emphasis on the usmle is different from what we are taught in our respective countries. So, a qbank early in your prep will guide you to the important tested material on step 1.

b. You'll be exposed to the 3-step questioning and conceptual approach of the usmle. You'll have the idea on how to study and you can judge as you go along which study materials will suit this approach best.

c. You will have time to "adjust" to this type of exam before you go to the more important qbank which is usmleworld. Starting with usmleworld can be overwhelming and you can maximize it more if you tackle it prepared.

Of course, you can do other qbanks first, like usmleconsult or usmlerx. It depends on you.

Good luck!

Oh! So that's what MBBS means!

Nice! Sounds very prestigious...

A summary of my prep would be:
- I read a couple of usmle non-kaplan review books for my local board exams. Do you know the ones at the back of FA? They have a list there of highly recommended non-kaplan review books. If you're running out of time, they can be very handy. For more detailed feedbacks from readers about these books, you can check Amazon.com. But of course, the more comprehensive ones that cover all bases are still Kaplan.

- I then read Kaplan + Goljan patho RR for my actual step 1 prep. I watched only Behavioral science videos.

- I am currently doing usmleworld. Revision and 2nd reading after.

- During revision, I will be doing selected videos and goljan audio. Do kaplan qbank, nbmes, and 2nd pass of usmleworld.

That's about it. Read Step 1 experiences from this forum so you'll have TONS of ideas how people go about their prep, esp those who aced the exam. As you go along your prep, you will know which way to go.
