Question How do I fix My Microbiology Problem!

Hey guys,

Micro is my weakest subject.
I've done kaplan and skimmed FA but it hasn't been enough
What else can I do to bring my micro knowledge up? I'm willing to dedicate 1.5-2 weeks to studying micro.

thanks!

I think the general problem with micro is how to remember the dry details...

Have you tried Clinical Microbiology Made Ridiculously Simple?
http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...poll-89-a.html

It won the best book in the poll. It's actually a very fun read! There are a lot of funny drawings in there that will help you remember the characteristics of each bug. Since you've read Kaplan already, I bet you already have a good knowledge base. It's the retention that's hard in micro. This book will help.

I would do it but only if you have the time to do so...However, I can tell you that this book is 110% recommendable. I read it... I started reading kaplan, but I stoped soon after feeling that my brain was getting as scramble as my breakfast (I love scramble eggs in the morning ).

You will found this book very good, nice examples... I do not regret of had read this book...

LOL!

@Dr. Mexito:
Great... Scrambled eggs do look like brain. Argh! No eggs for breakfast for me this week. Til I get that mental picture out...

@Khushi:
The best part of the book is the first half, the bacteria part. If you can find the time to read even the first half. You'll do great!

I would recommend you give 2 readings of MRS if you don't have enough time for Kaplan. MRS + First Aid should get you around 70% correct on the Qbank. Kaplan gets you that extra 10-20%. You just have to gun it out...there is no alternative to hard work. Micro is a dry subject with a lot of information. Likewise, it's also very volatile. That's why you pretty much have to memorize everything micro-related in First Aid. You can't just sit there and not want to read and expect it to just come to you somehow. Gotta put in the time if you want to see the results. Good luck!

Hey! Good luck! Wish you all the best!

If you're running out of time just do tons of micro questions to help retention and recall.I read a step experience that's what a 99-er did for micro.

awesome, thanks for all the input guys

my only question is, is MBMRS oriented towards the step? I fear reading a textbook because there'll be a lot of low-yield mumbo jumbo and i really hate micro so i don't want to read anything i don't have to.

i was thinking of doing kaplan videos (i never did these) whilst looking over my textbook (which ive read 2-3x now). a sort of, start from scratch and take my time.
but MBMRS will be a better approach? more in that text than in the kaplan videos?

Micro videos aren't one of the highly recommended videos to watch but if you're doing poorly in that subject, go for it.

I had the same dilemma too with immuno before. I can't remember anything when I was starting uworld. I stopped uworld and went back to review it. I went first to immuno videos (also not highly recommended) and immuno KLN (second read). I had a more comprehensive review book on stand-by in case the videos + KLN will fail me.

The KLN videos + KLN notes combo worked for me. But I did flashcards with it and I summarized the text. (To illustrate: my uworld immuno is 80+)

I think at this point, it's in the revision that matters.

Don't go for the textbook. It's too heavy... You might just waste your time... Just KLN videos + KLN notes. Do flashcards. Memorize. Revise. I think this will be a more effective approach.

So you think i should do kaplan vids rather than rediculously simple eh?

Oh... Wait! I thought you were referring to a medical textbook (the big, bulky ones we read back in med school) when you used "textbook" and "MBMRS" in the same sentence... I know it usually as CMMRS or MRS... LOL!

I also thought you were subsequently trying to choose between using a medical textbook and kaplan videos. My bad... Sorry to be confusing...

CMMRS is a review book by US authors. It's like an expanded comic book on microbio. You'll have fun reading it. At the back of it says, "Excellent Board Review". So, yeah, I guess it is geared towards the step.

Savleem is right. CMMRS + FA + Qbank questions would be enough. Let Kaplan videos be your last, last resort.

Just make flashcards and revise. You''ll do great!

I only did immuno videos bec they were short (9 hrs only?) and immuno is a conceptual subject that deals with processes.

So, to clarify, my take will be:
CMMRS > Kaplan videos > Medical textbook (if part of the options)

ok good because i just started watching the kaplan videos for micro and man oh man is that lady boring (and slightly annoying). My eyes felt so heavy 10min in lol

I'll definitely have to get my hands on ridiculously simple then. And if its geared towards the boards then awesome.

Thanks!
