Wink Step 1 Exam Experience 248/87

Hi guys,
First of all a very big thanks to all the forum members for starting all such great threads which helped me ace the exam with a good score. This forum helped me a lot and now its my time to help some of u guys preparing for step1.

I am an IMG from India, graduating this march. This is my experience.

step1 preparation time: 5 months.

Materials used:
Kaplan lecture notes & videos except for pathology for path I used goljan audio & rapid review book, first aid, UWorld qbank, did few Kaplan qbank, images from webpath and posts from this forum.

UWSA1- 242 4 (weeks before exam) WBE
NBME7- 247 2WBE
NBME12- 252 1WBE
UWSA2- 265 1WBE
All the other NBME's did offline(very imp do all of them and do at least 2 of them online)

Until 1 month before exam I was studying ok but somewhere I knew i was missing quite a few concepts but didn't know what they were exactly,but then after giving my 1st practice test I started to realize my weak points and for like 10days studied them until i could get those concepts,i used to spend hours to get some minor concepts sometimes, this forum was extremely useful in that part.At first i thought i was wasting a lot of time searching this forum for those concepts but later i realized i was much more confident after getting those concepts.So, guys no matter even if u have 1 month left and u are having hard time in getting some type of questions correct,try to spend more time on them like I did u will feel much more confident.

Last 2weeks didn't study much just revised everything,revised first aid about 4-5times on the whole(great book), studied untill noon before the exam day. On the exam day I didn't feel nervous at all. I felt the exam tougher than any practice test i gave, felt i did it worst,realised i did a few silly mistakes which are inevitable i guess.On the whole exam is very much doable & anyone can get good scores with a little bit of effort.

I would be pleased to answer any queries regarding step1.

Great score! Congrats!

What do you think the difficulty level of Kaplan Qbank compared with real questions of Step 1? Is the Kaplan Qbank, like said by others, focusing more on trival details and more twisted? You mentioned the real test is doable, does it mean most of the questions are straight forward and just test the foundamental concepts? What's your score for UW on the first attempt?

Thank you for sharing your experience!

congratulations on ur awesome score! happy for u! .. so tell me how did u use FA .. and when did u start using it? im really confused abt it. there r some ppl who say doing only FA(even aftr reading KLN) is useless and that we shud do FA along woth KLN even if its the 3rd or 4th read!! and there r others who say we shd stick to FA only aftr 1 or 2 reads ok KLN ... what do u suggest?? do u suggest annotating FA with the missing stuff frm KLN or only stuff from UW.. this annotating takes so much time, im not usre what to do. plz gv ur opinion. thanks .. and i wanted to ask u what abt the questoons with pictures?? im very weak on those esp the histopathology microscopic slides .. did u get a lot of those? do they give clues in the stem of the question or u had to figure it out just by lookin at the picture? thanks, and good luck with CK

@doctorindistress
I went through the videos of topics carefully, googled the ones which were difficult to understand, and then tried to solve questions on those concepts in this forum and other resources available.Regarding the difficulty level of the exam compared to UWorld, the exam was similar to UWorld except for few weird questions which i had hard time understanding what they were exactly trying to ask in the question stem.

@belindalimm
I didnt do a lot of kaplan qbank ques, but for the ones i did i felt like it tested more on memorization unlike the real exam which by far tests ur concepts, memory based facts are tested very minimally.

@meover
it was after i did my UWSA1 which was 4wks before exam,i did lose a lot of questions on the same concepts so i decided to go on those weak points for 10days.Meanwhile i was doing offline nbme's, i was getting around 168-172 ques correct in them after which i did form 7 online.

@numbndumb
whether or not to use the FA is entirely based on ones interest.I personally found it very useful and started it while i was solving UWorld qbank.I didnt annote anything rather i was studying kaplan LN in parallel with FA.

also by saying that it was concept based does it mean that there were many diagrams (especially for pharma , patho, cardio and respiratory), like the questions in uworld??

Thank for sharing. When you say concept based what exactly do you mean? Could you please explain further. Do they describe the disease for you and you have to think about what they are talking about then is when you answer rhe question being asked?
