Ok then. I was running late the morning of my exam, so to start with I was terrified I'm gonna miss the exam. I was thinking about the past few months of my life and how it's all gonna go to waste, because I was late. Anyway. I arrived to the centre a few minutes before my scheduled appointment. The staff was very nice and calmed me down that everything is gonna be alright. The day started far from perfect, even though I imagined it in my head at least a hundred times. I forgot to wear my lenses, so I was sure I'm gonna have trouble reading to the end of my exam. Since I was late, I didn't have time to go to the bathroom and I forgot to take my earplugs. However, they provided me with a pair.
I got a chance to calm myself down a little bit during the initial security process. However, I still felt like I'm not calm yet, so I took a few minutes during my tutorial to breathe.
After that I started the first block. The questions were long, way longer than I expected. I was able to finish the block with less than 5 minutes to spare in the first one, it was getting better to the end of the exam, in my last block, I had like 17 minutes left when I answered the last question. However, I still felt too much time pressure. During breaks I checked a few answers, some were correct, which calmed me down, some were wrong, making me want to break something, because those were easy questions.
I wasn't hungry at all during the exam. However, I made myself eat a protein bar, so that my stomach wouldn't hurt. Anyway, EAT BREAKFAST. Maybe you'll be hungry during the exam, maybe you won't. But you need energy.
During the exam, I didn't feel too stressed. I felt...weird really. After every block I told myself, ok it's gonna be fine. Maybe you messed up these (add # of finished blocks) blocks, but you still have a couple more to go through. The battle is not lost yet. You still have a chance to do good.
I wasn't exactly freaking out during breaks, but during blocks, there were some people in the exam room who had to write sth. They were doing A LOT of writing. I don't know what was the reason, if the noise reducing headphones and earplugs combined didn't provide enough noise reduction or was I just too sensitive to any noise during the exam. I really have no idea. However, I remember trying to concentrate on reading the stem and all I could hear was tap-tap-tap-tap. So I tried my hardest not to freak out and concentrate on the questions.
What worried me during the exam was this weird feeling like I was only doing another practise test. Like this wasn't for real. Like I wasn't trying hard enough or something.
Anyway. After I finished my test I came out, sat down on the floor and started crying. I was exhausted. I was scared and freaked out. I was sure I'm gonna fail the exam. Now, I don't think I failed, but I don't think I did that great either. I just have to wait for the results. So this is my exam experience.

Feel free to ask me questions.

Thanks smita, I am hoping to do better on Step 2. Anyway, I guess the bottom line is to keep going, no matter how bad the day goes.

Wow you had really bad exp... Sorry to hear that... but you know what? I have the same thing and I wish I have time to write about what happened to me before the exam, I really went through a tough experience and I faced lots of issues during the last 5 days but I tried to stay calm. I'm expecting mine on 28th too. My last nbme was 230! However I had to take it on 5th of October due to time strains plus in the exam I didn't do well as in nbme

I feel for you. I postponed my exam so that I could study some more. But I didn't study as much as I planned.
I don't think Step 1 is a pleasant experience for anyone. Bad things happen and we have to deal with them and move on.
Anyway, as smita said, there is always Step 2, right?

Yeah sure we did our best regardless of circumstances.. The good thing that I'm extremely busy these days so both suppression and repression are working with me lol

To be honest i gave step1 last night ofcourse that was a beautiful dream, yet to come true !

Reading your exam exp. made me realize how much we all go through to achieve what we want. i feel all of us, in our very own ways are struggling everyday to live our dream and our hard work will definitely pay off!

If you work smart and hard, it's definitely not a waste, whatever the score will be. There are so many things you learn just by studying for an exam.
Despite how anxious I am about my score, I definitely see these past couple of months as a positive experience.

I think I mite get my results on the 28th did mine on the 13th.. i heard they might count that day.

I felt nervous the whole time couldn't catch a break.. the questions were very long.. i felt like i couldn't remember my own name..

do what Mcquacky did before the exam... just breath... i did the same thing but after my 1st 2 blocks I felt like I had no clue what i was doing.. BUT thats just me...

My advice, if this happens to u.. TAKE A BREAK...!! before starting anything else... BREATH n keep telling yourself.. "I can do this"

my avg. on uworld is 78% or 90th percentile- 1st go
Kaplan I had a 67% avg compared to the overall avg. of 61% for ppl using the qbank...

But i don't know what my step grade will look like...

Nervous like hell...

These past few weeks I've been trying to keep myself busy so I wouldn't think about the exam. Today, out of the blue I started remembering waay too many questions I got wrong that I haven't even thought about before. Damn, I wish I could go back and do better.

I don't know. What is the worst thing that can happen, right? In forty-something hours we'll know.
Best of luck to both of us!

Best of luck quacky!! & To be too!!
May you both get higher than your target scores!
As someone mentioned in the previous posts, we go through so much in this usmle journey. I am only in the middle of my prep but I can feel you guys. Tension building up! One day I will be standing at the point where you guys are right now. I can imagine what it feels like (maybe not enough until I go through it myself haha). But anyway GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thank you so much! Work hard and keep your hopes up. You'll be fine.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure you know what it feels like. I knew before I took that thing that these three weeks would be hard. Well it's almost over now. I should thank everyone who had to listen to my whining all this time and managed to overcome the urge to smash me with a hammer.

Am so sorry to hear that. But don't lose hope. No score is too low to match. You can make up for it by getting a high score on CK and good LORs.

No no, I'm not saying it was a waste. I am happy that I studied, nobody can take that away from me. I'm just a little sad that I didn't do as well as I hoped. I messed up big time. It happens sometimes. But there is a room for improvement.

Wish you guys all the best!

Congratulations quacky & to be on getting done! Step 1 is a long and tough journey which you both have survived so it's great! Now the next journey begins for you two. Regardless of the score, I am sure the knowledge and exam tackling experience you guys gained will go a long way to help you guys. There are many more exams to come and to show improvement in, step 2 CK.. CS.. step 3.... Not to forget the board exam at the end of residency! And then another at the end of fellowship! ? this was just the beginning, take it as a preparation exam for the upcoming ones! That's why it is called step 1: the first step! Keep climbing guys! All the best!
And yes as dr270plus said, please share the correlation of your NBME scores with the real one. I mean don't tell us the actual score, but if you could please tell like let's say your real score was +5 points from last NBME 17 taken x number of weeks before the exam, +10 points from the second last NBME 16 taken y number of weeks before the exam. Thanks a lot!

Ok then...
NBME 11 (2 months before)
NBME 13 (1.5 months before)
NBME 16 (2 weeks before)
were all about 25-30 pts higher than my real Step 1 score. As I said before, I messed up.

Thanks for sharing your NBME correlation quacky.
Best of luck for step 2 now! You can definitely ace it with solid determination and compensate for the step 1 score. Keep going!
