Arrow Exam in 4 weeks..

Hey guys, I have my exam in about 4 weeks (and extending my date isn't an option anymore).. I'm not exactly sure what I need to do in that time.. I have just finished UWorld averaging in the high 50s.. I barely passed my NBME exam, and I wish to raise my score another 12-15 points to be realistic.. I'm weakest in path and also need help memorizing the small details of FA..

My sources are DIT (have recently completed), Pathoma, FA, and UWorld (recently completed).. I don't know if I should do DIT again because it takes up most of my day (but this can help me memorize the details of FA), OR if I should focus on Pathoma since I have missed many questions on Path..

Doing both DIT and Path in 4 weeks will be hard to do and I just don't know what to focus on.. Maybe do Pathoma and then just try to memorize FA on my own?? Please any tips/advice would be great!

Hey thanks for the response.. I have not picked a specific date yet but it will most likely be towards the end of the month.. what about you??

Is there anyone else that has been in a similar situation? What do y'all think?

Read previous exam experience threads, maybe you can find something that suits your goal and learning style.

If you want to get others' opinion, you should be more specific, ie what is your goal, what are your NBME scores recently... There are no universal rules other than "study hard, do Qs, revise FA and UW at least twice...etc..." that you might have had enough.

Regards,

Yea sorry about that lol.. Honestly, I will be happy with a 200+ only because I don't think it's realistic for me to score higher than that in the amount of time remaining.. My last NBME was in the 190s.. and I have sat for this exam before without any success (stamina played a good role).. I'm not going to give up..

I have done DIT once and it took me a while, but many previous threads mention people doing it more than once.. I hope that if I did this it wouldn't be a waste of my time with only 4 weeks left.. Maybe doing Pathoma would help raise my score on my next NBME over doing DIT again?! I will def be going through Uworld for a second run, but I don't know if I should focus more on questions now or focus more on FA..

And you're right, it comes down to my learning style in the end, but I should rephrase my question and ask.. Who here has been in a similar scenario and successfully raised their score from the 190s to a 200+?! I think my brain just can't hold all the information in FA in my head at once lol.. I will keep you guys posted if I find something that works for me

but everyone's told me that a good revision of uworld and FA is good enough to score 235+.
good luck to you!!

As the last guy said, work on your weak areas. I'm sure having gone through UW and having read FA you have some sort of idea what your weakest areas are. Improving these should be your number 1 priority now. You don't need to worry about your strengths at this point. Working on them will only be of marginal help but fixing all your weak areas will help you pick up points on the exam that you might lose.

Once you get done with your weak areas and feel comfortable with them just move on to reviewing FA and questions that gave you problems in UW.

Believe it or not but 4 weeks is still a long time. I don't know what your schedule is like but just kill yourself now. Its the last stand, sleep less and study as much as possible. You can still get a lot done.

The fact that you passed your NBME is a really good sign. You know enough to pass but whatever you pickup from now on is just bonus on top of that, which is why I can't stress working on your weak areas enough.

Look back at all the questions you've done and ask yourself these questions. The more these apply to a certain topic then the weaker it is.

1. which topic's questions did you most answer incorrectly.
2. which topic's questions did you have problems understanding.
3. which topic's questions while answering did you have to think longest about.
4. which topic's questions you had absolutely no clue what the answer was.

Basically when answering questions which topics give you the most problems.

Open your FA at the first chapter and just glance at all the chapters and ask yourself these questions. The more of these apply to a topic means the weaker it is.

1. which topic feels as if you're reading it for the first time.
2. which topic feels like you don't understand all the concepts (bigger picture)
3. which topic feels like you don't know all the minor details (smaller picture)
4. which topic feels like you have the most problem recalling when doing questions.

This should give you a pretty good idea on what you need to work on.

well to be honest, my last three months were only FA and UW lol and i barely recall the info...just finished uw this week, but i was revising FA alongside ...

and my plan for the upcoming four weeks is also FA and UW lool ;D

what freaks me out is that i didn't take any assessments yet saving them for the last two weeks...risky but i can't take any now since i need to consolidate all the info in order to get a closer score correlation enshalla :sorry:

anxiety and tachycardia are the two main features nowadays with occasional insomnia attacks that ruined my sleeping rythm....

i was scoring in the high 50s and by the time i finished uw it was around 60
except for neuro where i had to omitt all the questions and study them lol

God i am really sooooooooooooooooooooooo freakin out

i cnt emphasis how imp it is.
hope this helped, and pray to God, he would takecare of the rest!

I agree with your statement about the evaluation of weaknesses

200 nbme questions are not enough to evaluate your strength.

Hi, MedPharm!

I'm sorry to digress... I can't help but notice you have a nice set of books!

I have Robbin's qbook. I just checked Amazon.com for the Lippincott Q&A biochemistry and neuroscience. They look really good! I have been looking all over the place for a good biochem qbook since it's my weakest subject (so far) in uworld.

What's your personal experience with Lippincott Q&A biochemistry and neuroscience?

The only problem I have now is I don't think it's available here in my country. I have to have it shipped from Amazon. Would it be worth my effort and expense?

Thanks!!

hi!

yeah...i'm sort of walking library

biochem is my weakest subject too (in combination with nephro)
the book is not as fat as it looks...has about 20 qs about every topic. it is quite tough...some times i have the feeling even harder than uworld (and robbins qs are kindergarden against it)i got mine from a friend who wrote last year.
tip: check out fb usmle group...hot thing....saves money...a friend told me...

I'm a book-whore too!

It's harder than Robbins qbook and uworld?! Wow! That makes it more interesting...
It does look like it has good and challenging biochem case-format mcqs when I checked it in Amazon.

I checked the FB group. Were you referring to the usmle group named "usmle study materials online"?
The usmle book pdfs are really cheap!

Thank you for the quick reply and immensely valuable tip!!

LOL! The best things in life really are...!

TONS of thanks!

I wasn't able to download them yet coz the links were taken down but at least I know they are available in the internet. I just need to look for them.

Good luck with step 1, bud!

Tell your boyfriend that by the time the SSRIs take effect (after 3 weeks), you're already done with the exam! LOL!

Of course, your parents are right! You should drink more. There's always room for beer. When I finish step 1, I'll party so hard, I'll have vitamin deficiencies, delirium tremens, and mallory-weiss tears!!

Wish you all the best!!

Hey everyone, thanks for the advice! It's good to know that we are all in this together.. and for everyone who is taking it towards the end of March, let's make sure we are all partying together end of April lol.. I'm going to focus on FA and my weak areas and try to get those points as y'all stated.. It's time to just focus the hardest we can for 4 more weeks with an occasional pushup here and there :P

Anyways, let's keep in touch and help each stay motivated.. I will be choosing my date this week from 27th-31st of March.. one of those days, I have 3 testing centers near my area..

Feel free to PM me anytime; and remember Zidovudine can be used during pregnancy to reduce the risk of fetal transmission.. BTW, I think it would be a good idea to start a thread (if it hasn't been done already) for anyone to state simple facts of FA that are hard to remember.. Difficult topics will vary for everyone, but it's good to just read a thread when you're laying in bed about to pass out lol.. Good luck!

@whatsupdoc7:

Yep! I agree... that's a good idea!

Considering all the time I spend in this forum... It will be great if there's an "intense" learning thread.

I haven't taken one yet ( i know i should have) but I'm freaking out about what it will do to my confidence....uworld is already giving my confidence a problem as we speak

so my plan is to take it around the 12...im not too worried as i can extend the eligibility if need be but i don't know if i can handle studying more then one more month! But if i have to, i will.

Default Sniff Sniff- Hate studying!

Hello Guys I am thinking about 28/29th March. I took offline NBME 1/2/3/4 too and I wasnt happy with the results averaging around 217. After which I deactivated my FB. so, I cant join you guys there!
I have problem with memorizing details and formulas.

P.S NBMEs demoralize a lot ! So, i suggest that you take offline NBMEs asap !

Ooohhh... I'll get to see what Hitman looks like! I've always wondered if you look like Jason Statham because of your name.

@hypermedic: You're from Cairo... Nice! I've always wanted to see the pyramids. If we end up in the same hospital in the US, I'll bug you to give me a tour!

@Medpharm: I've seen Austria from the movie, Sound of Music. LOL!

@drbedi: I'm born and raised in the Philippines. Fresh local board-passer.

Here is a rough guide on the correlation of usmleworld scores and actual score:
http://usmle-score-correlation.blogspot.com/

If you did it random, timed, per 46-question blocks, your uworld scores may pretty much correlate. If you did it otherwise, then, no, I don't think it will.

Of course, to reinforce score predictions, do nbmes.

since u r solving right now, can u pause in the middle of the block or like the exam u can only pause between blocks?

what do u recommend, self paced or standard paced?

u can pause whenever u want...i'd recommend standard paced....
or for the health of your soul...stop all that and have some spare time....

yes , i am in the same boat .. i was fine on UW , but on kaplan i felt like i dont know anything , infact i am going to go over those genetic and biochem stuff today itself ........ please do go over it , if you have read the exam experiences of people who have recently given the exam say it was tough on genetics ... so do go over it , who knows you may find a similar Qs in the exam .......

goodluck

Hey, XpaezX! Good luck in the last two weeks!!

I'ts better to freak out (I've seen the other thread), the adrenaline rush is tons better than just being burnt out and indifferent.

Since you're still studying and all, in terms of score, there's no way to go but UP!!

Hi, MedPharm!

LOL! Who does the nbme while chatting in the forums? Hahaha... I do hope you were already sober when you took it! A 220 in nbme 11 while drunk will put everyone else to shame!

I thought before to get rid of the alcohol in my room before I start doing the nbmes. From the looks of it, maybe I should get the lemon and salt ready with my tequila bottle while taking the nbme instead.

If we can only deposit luck in the bank just to make sure we have enough on the exam day... Maybe I should go out in the fields to look for a 4-leaf clover? But then again, I don't think there are clovers here in the tropics.

I don't think it's just luck that attributed to your high scores. Aside from the knowledge, it's also the test-taking skills from all the questions we have been exposed to. I noticed that if we can just eliminate most of the choices, the wise guess is usually right!

I also have this feeling that on the exam day, if the questions are really difficult, the scoring is also higher. That's why either way, if the exam turns out easy or hard, we're all going to do great!

Thanks!

LOL! Luck qbank -> I wonder how much will it cost per month? Or is it going to be like DIT that we'll have to pay $700 for the whole course! Hopefully, if there's such a qbank, there's also a downloadable version in torrent.

Question help

Do you guys think 200 (410) in UWSA-1 is an "okay" score if exam is in the end of the March? Do you think i should cancel my exam date and extend my eligibility period.

& if i do plan to extend my Eligibility period what is the process and fees do i have to pay?

btw my exam is on March 25th

Any advice is appreciated

P.s, my goal is to get score in 220-230s :sorry:

I would extend it if i was you...i just had a similar situation (my date was supposed to march 26) but i extended my eligibility period as i felt i was not ready

Since i just went through the process, first if you have set a pro metric appointment you must cancel that first.

Then you have to enter into iwa...there is a tab on the left side saying extend eligibility period, just click that link and follow instructions...you will have to pay 50 dollars if you do it before 5 days of the exam and if it is within 5 days you have to pay around 200 i think

Once that is done you will receive an email from ecfmg saying they are processed your request and they will be sending you another permit ( i recieved the email last night so it should be coming in a couple weeks)

Finally, you also have to pay pro metric another 60 dollars before you can set another appointment

Hi, patho2012! I don't have first-hand experience with rescheduling the actual exam date, but this is what doctorindistress said in an earlier thread:

...since your exam is 31 days from now, you can cancel without a fee. if you cancel 31 days but 5 days before the exam, ull pay 50 usd. if you schedule 5 days before the exam, the fee is a whopping 252 usd.

You can find the whole conversation here (it's towards the end): Cancelled the exam because of low score!.

If that's the case (exam date is > 1 month), I guess all you have to pay is the fee for extending the eligibility period -- around $60 -- and no rescheduling fees.

Default pay for new eligibility period? pay for cancelling the reservation?

thanks d_wiqed,
I am confused because together with the eligibility period extension fee (that I have to pay to ECFMG) do I have to pay to the Prometric center because I already have an appointment with them? Do I have to pay to the test center (via ECFMG) to cancel my appointment?

I think there's no fee in rescheduling if it's still over a month... I'm not the best person to tell you. It's just what I have read in these recent threads:

Skipping the Exam Date
Cancelling Prometric Date a week before the exam date

Question :)

I just extended my eligibility by paying 65$ through ECFMG. However, I haven't really cancel my date yet i wanna give a 3-4 days and do NBME to see where i stand really. If my score is below 210 i will go ahead and cancel my date.

btw today is March 14 and i'll be writing NBME on March 16 i still have safe window period to cancel my date right?

Yea you have to pay 60 bucks to pro metric if you have already had set up
An appointment with Them.

I haven't finished doing this yet as I am waiting or my permit but you'll have to call them up (pro metric) and pay them thru the phone before You can get another appointment with them (it's separate from ecfmg)

To your earlier question no there isnt any fee to ecfmg if You change your date before a month
