Question Pathogensis of Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy

FA 2012 page 571 states that it can result in hypertrophic osteoarthropathy.
what do you think the mechanism is?
same as sarcoidosis? 1alpha hydroxylase elevation mediated vit. D activation?

HOPA (hypertrophic osteoarthropathy) has an yet unknown mechanism (vide harrison)..as uworld put it the platelets gets crushed normally in lung microvasculature (poor fella...thay dont sleek even through that spaces where its not supposed to)..but in lung ca that doesn't happen..so megakaryocytes migrate to peripheral blood stream and they attract several growth factors (pdgf, egf etc) with them causing the thickening of distal nail bed (size matters when it cums to pathogenicity u see) resulting in a feature we clinically call clubbing..well that's a postulation...and of course most accepted one..but that's not exactly the reason..i mean its closest as uworld says..dont bite ur nails over it...learn causes of clubbing instead..it can be asked very frequently...that's my wild guess..hope it helps..
