80 year old man comes for chest pain. Lives with his daughter's family. He has numerous welts and abrasion and appears malnourished. He said his diet is fine.
Which of the following is the most appropriate next step in management?

a- Confront the family about the abuse
b- Enroll the family in family counseling
c- Notify social services of the potential abuse
d- Place him in a nursing home
e- Refer him to a residential community

The correct answer is C

Child and Elderly abuse is mandatory reportable
Spousal abuse is not mandatory reportable

Isn't spousal abuse one of the cases in which we should break out confidentialiy.. Why bother if we are not going to report it??

You do everything that you can to try to stop the spousal abuse but there's no need to report it because even if you do the social services and police cannot do anything about it because in USA the law says "the spouse cannot testify against or for the partner" until they separate.

elder abuse and child abuse are mandatory reportable offences....pity no one cares about the spouse!
