Smile Basket687 step 1 experience (252/87)

I wrote step 1 on 6 Feb 2012 and received the result on 29 Feb 2012, I got 252/87 and I want to share my experience.

I am an IMG, graduated in June 2011 and started my step 1 preparation in July 2011, so I studied for about 7 months.
Book used for preparation (I read them in that order):
First 3.5 months:
-Physiology: BRS physiology
-Pathology: BRS pathology
-Biochemistry and genetics: Kaplan lecture notes
-Microbiology: MRS
-Anatomy: Kaplan lecture notes (I read only neuro and upper and lower limbs)
-Behavioral: High yield behavioral sciences
-Immunology: High yield immunology
Those were the books I used for the "first reading" which lasted around 3.5 months, I occasionally did some questions from Kaplan Qbook.

After that I started with First Aid, it took me 1 month to finish it.

After that I subscribed for Kaplan Qbank for 1 month, I did it while reviewing First Aid, my cumulative score was 77% (unused, mixed, timed).

By then I wanted to start with UW but I had to wait for 2 more weeks because my first certification of identification (form 186) was rejected so I had to send it again and I did not want to start UW before I schedule my exam.

After my form 186 was accepted I subscribed for UW for 1 month, did 93% of it and averaged 82% (timed, unused, mixed).

I did some NBME questions offline just to see their questions style, I did not do any online NBME ar USWA.

In the last 10 days I reviewed Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, and other miscellaneous easily forgettable information.

The exam:
After I skipped the tutorial I started the first block, in the first 15 minuted I was really anxious but then I calmed down, I found the exam a little bit easier than UW (and certainly easier than Kaplan Qbank) but much harder than NBME 7, on average I marked 7-8 questions per block, I felt that the exam was more about concepts and integration and less about minute details, I think that FA is almost enough for the exam provided that you know it very well and you understand the concepts, I also think that it is very important to have good concentration during the exam.

After the exam: I did not really know what to expect mainly because no one knows how the score is calculated, but I felt that I did relatively well. I was going to be disappointed with anything below 250.

I received the result on 29 Feb and I got 252/87 (thanks god).

If you know the material in FA and understand the concepts you will likely do well. How much do you score on UW (keep in mind that your UW score after the first time does not have much predictive value), did you do an NBME? (I think that it is a good idea to do an NBME now), I don't think that you have enough time to do kaplan Qbank provided that you exam is on march 19

First of all... Congrats, you did it!!!

I have some questions:
I'm now reviewing UW with FA... Can you give me some insight in how you did it please? I'm also aiming for a 250 and I did my preparation pretty much like you did. could you give me some advice in the methodology of how you did the review?

Also, how much time per day, on average, did you expended while reviewing the Qbank and FA?

thank you very much... see you in the next step...

congrats on an awesome score. now start praying for the rest of us mortals!

if you were to recommend a book apart for KLN & FA, which of the other books you used would you consider a must read?

Thank you for sharing your experience! Could you explain a little bit detail about in which aspects make the Kaplan qbank much more difficult than the real test?

Appreciate your perspective!

@theundead: I just gotta ask... are undeads = mortals?

@basket687: thank you for sharing your experience with us! Again, great score!
I have some questions too...
- Was it hard to do kaplan qbank in random, timed?
- Were you doing it 2 blocks per day to be able to finish kaplan qbank in 1 month? Did it leave you time to study for anything else or you just studied the explanations in the qbank?

the undead can be killed by fire - zombiecalypse 101(guessing u missed that class in high school)

even if that wasn't true, the sheer stress of step1 can definitely reduce the most sturdy of monsters to weaklings!

In fact I did not read review books more than 1 time (after I started with FA I did not look back), but everyone has his own way to study.
Regarding ethics I felt that I benefited most from doing questions and reading explanations.
There were some genetics questions, most of them not that hard and many of them were about determining the mode of inheritance from a pedigree.
Regarding buzzwords they were some for sure but many questions did not rely on buzzwords (I would say that the exam had less buzzwords than UW)

Yes I skipped histo and relied only on FA and Qbanks for it, I do not know much about histology review books and as you said it is not a very high yield subject.

Regarding biostat graphs there were some graphs that look weird initially but if you try to analyze them you can answer the question provided you understand biostat concepts.

I did not take noted from UW (mainly because I had to do it in 1 month and I did it as the final step of my prep) but taking notes can sometimes be a good idea.

When I was reviewing FA while doing UW or kaplan Qbank I did 1 block per day (around 3-4 hrs for solving qs + explanations) and I read from FA for about 4-5 hours per day), sometimes I did 2 blocks per day without reading FA.

Wish you the best in your exam!

If you understand it very well then FA would be almost enough, I found biochem/genetics and neuro to be difficult to understand from FA alone. So I can't say that a certain review book is a must read.

If you understand FA well then keep reviewing it and do as much questions as you can and read their explanations, otherwise turn to review books to get the concepts.

Kaplan Qbank sometimes asks about minute details and obscure facts that don't appear frequently on the real test, in fact I think that the exam is similar to kaplan Qank with the "high yield questions only" option ticked.

- Was it hard to do kaplan qbank in random, timed?
- Were you doing it 2 blocks per day to be able to finish kaplan qbank in 1 month? Did it leave you time to study for anything else or you just studied the explanations in the qbank?
-I did it after I finished FA for the first time so I did it random, timed (but it is still a relatively hard Qbank)
-Sometimes I did 2 blocks per day (or even 3) and sometimes I did 1 block plus reading some material from FA, but note that I finished FA the second time 2 weeks after my 1 month subscribtion for kaplan Qbank had ended.

There were many 2-step questions in the exam. In fact, simple very straight forward questions were relatively few in number.

don't pay any attention to the 2digit score
as of oct31,2011 the 2digit scale was changed. so this 87 is not the same 87 you are thinking of.
also, this new 2digit score is garbage and will be removed shortly so don't even get comfy with it.
the only thing that matters is the 3digit score.

also, the 2 digit score is NOT a percentile. amazes me how many people think it is, its a score, assigned based on your 3-digit score.

That's a good score man, congratz!

But I'm a bit confused...shouldn't 252 be a 99 in terms of 2 digit score?

Yes I did not use any other book for anatomy and embryo other than FA, and I relied mostly on the explanations from kaplan Qbank and UW.

Biostat graph were not really hard, but there were maybe 2 strange graphs (types of graph that I have not seen before).
