From what Uptodate says, entero-invasive Salmonella induces neutrophil migration toward the intestinal epithelium, facilitating phagocytosis of the salmonella bacteria. One would think this is a disadvantage, but Salmonella has been shown to persist in phagocytes. So in a way, the monocytic response actually aids in its virulence.
I actually heard it a few months ago when my peds attending pimped me about this, so I looked it up. Also, DIT and Kaplan mention this in passing, although I didn't pay attention to this at the time. You can look for it on uptodate under pathogenesis of salmonella/ virulence
