Anatomy What is the first finger; Thumb or Index!

here is a silly question.
by first finger, do they mean the thumb or the index finger

In my anatomy class, the first finger was the thumb; in popular usage, it's the index finger.
Guess there's no right answer.

I don't think they ask specifically as "the first finger" ..or "the second finger".
They normally ask about DIGITS ..there are 5 digits and the 1st digit is the Thumb, then Index Finger, then Middle finger, then Ring finger and finally the Pinky finger.

If they don't use Numbered DIGITS in the question stem, they might use the normal names of them as I stated above. I've seen that in some questions.

That was a tricky question though
