A 3 year old Caucasian girl is brought to the physician by her mother, who reports that 5 days ago the girl developed a low grade fever, malaise, headache , cough, coryza and soar throat and a pruritic rash that started on the head an trunk and spread to the remainder of the body. Physical examinations reveals diffuse skin lesions in varying stages with macules, papules, vesicles and pustules present. Varicella is diagnosed. Before the girl is sent home, the mother is advised to give the child aspirin as an antipyretic. Four days later the girl is brought to the ER is a comatose state. The mother says that her daughter had been vomiting for the past two days and was eating poorly. Examination reveals hepatomegaly but no icterus.
