I understand how you feel... It's so hard to part with it. I keep extending my uworld subscription. I am finished with it, but I want it to be active until my exam date which is 2 - 3 mos from now. Unfortunately, I still have the expense of the nbmes to think about. I'm so torn...

Good luck in your exam, bud!!

Yeah... I know what you are saying... I feel so attached to it, it has been my brave companion during this long preparation. I feel like in "Castaway" loosing "Wilson", and I have to let it go because my raft is going the opposite direction (Towards NBME and the real exam).

And I'm screaming: Wilson!!! I'm so sorry... Wilson I'm sorry... Wilson I can't... Wison!!!

I started uworld after my first reading of Kaplan (w/o videos) this Jan. 2012. I took extensive notes of uworld. My pacing per day depends on whether taking notes on the subject (I did it subject-wise) was hard or easy. For biochem and pathophysio, I can go as low as 35 mcqs/day. For pharma, I can finish up to 60 mcqs/day (I find the explanations in this subject straightforward).

Basically, what determines your pacing is the level of your prep and how much notes you are compelled to take down. If you're doing it subject-wise, you can read the topic in FA or kaplan notes before you answer uworld to make things easier and faster. Also, it's a choice between quality of notes or quantity of questions. I personally go for quality over quantity.

Uworld DOES take time. That's why if you read old threads here (even those that go waaaay back), they recommend a uworld subscription of 2 months. That recommendation takes into account "slow days". If you divide the number of questions in uworld by 62 days, that's like a daily quota of only 35 mcqs/day.

I finished 1st pass of Uworld a few days ago...what got me thru it, is I did 20Qs at a time...now if you are having problems with timing, then maybe doing a full block of 46qs is best, but I don't have that problem, so I just did 20 at a time...eating the elephant one bite at a time got me thru a lot of questions a day, and before I knew it, I was done. Now with my second go around, I'm getting like 100 or more a day, but its just review now.

aj23...i know doing 46q is difficult at a time but we use these q banks as learning tools...we are sensitizing our brain for the exam
if you are doing 20 Q AT ONE TIME AND 26 in the evening in my opinion its not a good idea...we want to train our brain for the D day so that we are able to do 7 blocks one after the other
and if you want you can do it
only the initial step is difficult
remember WE ARE THE MASTERS OF OUR BRAIN and the brain is not our master we can make it do what ever we want
my advise to you will be just complete that set of 46 Q in one go so that your brain is stimulated and you have that adrenaline rush
initially you might find it difficult but IT IS POSSIBLE
may be you can take a little longer to go through the explanations
but questions should be done in one go
this works out for me hope it does for you too
ALL THE BEST

usmlemydream:

am sorry i think you got me wrong.

Obviously i would do 46Q at 1 go.

i am worried about the time taken to review the explanation of all this 46Q
this takes me forever.

my average was roughly 40 q a day...

my buddy..everyone has different ways to study..i think i am not at all in a position to give u advise but i can of course tell u what i did..i actually did uworld in 2 months, first 32 blocks i wrote down extensive notes and was averaging around59-60% with the graph spread all over the place..then went over FA 2nd time and did rest 14 blocks(i averaged 65% this time in these 14 blocks) and my cumulative said 61%(63rd percentile)..gave nbme 12 without reviewing last 14 blocks..got a poor 193/380..was shattered..then reviewd the 14 blocks and gave took lesser notes this time..gave uwsa 15 days after taking nbme 12 and reviewing 14 blocks got 520/224..considering uwsa 1 predicts by 10 points i postponed my exam by 2 weeks and after going over my weak areas which nbme 12 showed, revised the wrong qs i did in uworld...going over FA 3rd and final time and nbme 13 and uwsa 2 on hands..my exam-11th..that was my whole story regarding uworld and 2 months and 1 week subscription..will dearly miss it though

Hi,
Is it a myth or fact that U world alone can yield a high score? Can you tell me specifically how you studied from u world. Like, did you study the questions according to each subject in tutor mode or did you study the questions in timed mode? Also did you read the full explanations, even the wrong ones. (like if the answer is B, did you read the explanations for C,D,E?) .Please give me more advice regarding step 1 prep. Thanks

all seniors say that uworld alone can yield a good score
our motive is not to learn the answer but the concept behind the questions
concepts are tested in the exam...even if i know all the answers in and out that doesnt mean i will have a good score...i got to know the concept right, this is what USMLE is testing on us
i did the question in timed test mode, subject wise
sometimes even having read the subject i did get a low score
but when i pondered over my books i realized everything was given there
i had not got the concept right
it depends on u how u want to use it
if u have done the videos plus KLN you could do it in random timed test mode
its you who has to decide what strategy suits you best what worked out for me might not work as well for you
when i did uworld i did go over the wrong choices also(i mean the explanations)
this clarified certain more things and i did benefit from it i would come across some questions later which asked questions from those explanations.
i made a notebook for the explanations and just wrote those things which i did not know earlier
as you know uworld needs to be revised it helps me in brushing things which are new for my brain

Hope this helps

i have no idea about DIT all i know is that it has to be used as a revision tool
it revises your FA
if u have videos listen to the videos plus KLN
after you are done with the first reading do some Qbank
use the Qbank as a learning tool to solidify your concepts and to know which area you need to stress more
then u can do an NBME(1,2 or 3) to access your weakness
work on weaker areas in then again give an NBME
closer to ur exam u can give NBME 11,12 and 13

go over the kaplan lectures and notes as fast as possible....the max of the prep time should be invested for questions.....the more qs u do the more the knowledge will stick.....reading the texts 3 times is more than enough.....

Kaplan notes+ lectures (all subs except path)
Goljan RR + audio lectures (path)
First aid

thats it.....u actually do not need anything else.....

uworld is mandatory.....kaplan q bank if you really have time + dedication(+ money)...

if you do choose both of them.....i would advice uworld as the learning tool (may be used in the tutor mode) and qbank as the mixed all subject bank for the last month.....explanations in the kaplan q bank are crap....

u see....its important to face the same topic presented in different ways in diff qs....most of the qs come from common topics.....

good luck
