Default Sleeping

Hey guys,

My sleeping schedule is REALLY messed up! I sleep around 5-6 AM and wake up around 12-1 PM. How do I fix this ?! Tried to fix it by sleeping early but even then I woke up late. It didn't help. It's just a cycle that keeps repeating and I feel like at night time, I am not too productive! Am I the only one? Any help ?!

Little by little it'll get adjusted. Do it 1 hour at a time until it normalizes.

I've been there many times and it doesn't happen in a single day. You could try also waking up very early to be really tired early night. But you'll probably be so tired to study. That's why I suggest doing it slowly.

I feel you!
I think until last month I slept between 4-6 am and woke up around 12-2 pm. Like tootsie said.. Just adjust it little by little. Start sleeping at 3am.. And wake up by 11 latest! Then sleep around 1 and wake up by 9/10. You will get better at it. Just make sure no matter what you wake up for that set time (for instance 11 am) and no matter how sleepy you are dont sleep after that. It might be hard at first.. But ur body will get used to it..
Hope it helps

Thanks. I will try that starting tonight! Morning hours can be more productive for me than the night time so the sooner I get in that routine, the better! Although, I can't really study when I'm tired lol But I guess it will get better when I start waking up early regularly and make it a routine.

Thanks for the tips!

Did it work last night?
I know what you mean. I cant really study when I am tired as well.. But in the long run its good. I used to wake up between 12-1. Now I cant sleep after 10.30. And I am not as tired as I was in the beginning when I was trying to change my sleep pattern.

i had sleep problems too,it took me some time to adjust.you can drink warm milk just before you go to sleep.try sleeping at 1-1:30 am and then slowly you can come down to 11-11:30,you sleep around 6hrs so by doing this you can wake up at 6 and can feel fresh.funny part is i somehow tried to sleep at 11:30 but couldn't wake up till it was 8...he he.at that point i thought its better sleeping at 5am and wake up at 12....but man waking up at 6-7am feels so fresh..it took 3 months for me to wake up at 6am.

Hey,

Well it didn't work all that well! I slept at 5:30 Am again but I managed to wake up by 12:30 and I'm starting to study now! This is 2 hours ahead of my schedule. Normally I get up around 1-1:30 and start studying around 3! So I guess its a better start to the day than the usual. Tomorrow I'll try waking up even earlier!

Update:

- Finished Genetics.
- 3 Chapters left in KLN & Pathoma for Pathology.
- Finishing off Immunology today.

I am ALMOST on track with my schedule however, I am lacking behind in questions. I am reviewing a block of 46 questions and doing Immunology today. Still have some path left which was supposed to be done a while back but I am working on it along side other subjects. Should be done Immunology today...Will try to get Biostats and Epidemiology in as well to get it out of the way.

My goal is to finish the following by Sunday -
- Pathology from KLN (37 pages left)
- Pathoma Videos (4 hours left)
- Immunology (will finish it by tonight)
- Genetics (Finished)
- Biostats/ Epidemiology (2 chapters from KLN)
- Neuro Kaplan Vids (about 9 hours)

Its a little ambitious once I added in the Neuro Kaplan Vids although originally I planned on doing HY Neuro but I will use HY Neuro for pictures along with KLN Videos. I'll try to get them Neuro done by Sunday although weekends are always slow!

Any advice or suggestions on my plan are welcome! Hopefully I can finish these subjects by Sunday, April 22nd and then focus on my weak areas for the next 4 - 5 days and then take an NBME.

Thanks for following up with my progress and giving me all the tips!

Sukar here's an update for you: past three days, including today, I've been waking up at - 11 AM, 8:30 AM and today at 10:30 AM.

Getting better and improving my output during the days and being less of a night owl. Although last night I had some trouble sleeping but managed to wake up at a decent time.

Guys any suggestions on Neuro as my plan was to do Neuro from HY & Kaplan Videos/Notes but I feel like its too time consuming. It's a little more than 9 hours of video lectures and 150 pages in KLN. Do you think DIT/FA is enough for Neuro? What do you suggest I should do for Neuro...I am confused and find Neuro as my biggest weakness.

Kaplan neuro videos were very helpful for me. I skipped the cerebellum, ANS (this was covered in pharma videos) and other parts, but I might get back to them. It only took me 1.5 days. I didn't read the book after watching them. (I read it already during my first reading.)

I watched them bec. I got many of the neuro questions in nbmes 1-4 wrong. They were really simple, but they always show a cross-section or gross specimen of the brain/spinal cord, brainstem, CT scans, etc. The videos show you these pictures and orient you to the structures. I have HY neuro, but I chose the videos over it. I was a bit lazy to memorize on my own.

When I took online nbme 5, I got a star in neuro! It worked for me. That's why I'm recommending it.

I suggest you study your weak areas in-depth while it's still early. So you don't have to worry about them anymore when the exam is close.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I think I will skip HY Neuro for now. I'll just focus on the videos and watch them. I will look over MY notes that I took in live lectures in the KLN and go along with the videos but my main focus would be on the videos. Although I am sure everything in MY notes is covered in the videos. I will just watch them at 1.5x.

ya you can do the Neuro videos at 1.5X speed.i agree with d wiqed the cerebellum is crap.DIT guy explains cerebellum part briefly,i guess that's what we shld know for step1. rest just do the Kaplan videos and notes.though he just reads it out, nothing we can do abt that.i feel the kaplan notes is well organised.
Some figures and pathways are well drawn in HY Neuro.you can refer to it when you are not clear with the kaplan notes.

Its Sunday .. and according to my plan I should be done with Pathoma today. Kalpan Lecture Notes I still have 3 chapters to read. Still have to start Neuro. This weekend threw me off coz I had guests coming over and just a busy weekend! Yesterday I spent some time working on Renal (which I think I've got it down solid now) and it was good since its one of my weaknesses.

Going to finish off Pathoma today, then read the last three chapters of KLN Path. Then I will start on Neuro and hopefully finish it by tomorrow! Running a day behind my schedule now!

Thanks!

Good question - It has to do with Sodium escape phenomenon in Primary Hyperaldosteronism (pituitary adenoma releasing high levels of aldosterone). Initially you get high levels of Na+ retention but then ANP is released by the atria which decrease Na+ reabsorption and there is also decreased renin & decreased proximal tubular reabsorption of Na+ ... this is called Na+ Escape and thats why you don't get edema in Hyperaldosteronism.

In secondary hyperaldosteronism, there is low bp or renal artery stenosis, so high levels of renin leading to high levels of aldosterone and no ANP is released. And aldosterone levels (and renin) are only elevated till the BP is back to normal. And when it can't get back to normal they remain elevated and keep retaining fluids and Na+ and lead to edema.

I think that's correct..So far what I understand anyways

Please correct me!

you are correct, but just 1 thing i guess was wrong.
according to wat i have read from UW, its basically the excess Na+ causes water retention therefore, this excess INTRAVASCULAR volume(coz of water) causes ANP to be released.

CORRECTION: you said excess Na+
its basically increased water that causes ANP release.

- Genetics (Finished)(Finished)
- Biostats/ Epidemiology (2 chapters from KLN)(Finished)
-Pathology from KLN (37 pages left)
- Neuro Kaplan Vids (about 9 hours)

Still have Neuro Videos to watch and 3 Chapters of Path from KLN.

I watched CNS Videos from Pathoma last so that I can continue on to Neuro now and Pathoma vids will complement the KLN vids nicely. Anyways, had a very slow weekend; lounging at home, family came over today, etc etc...Still trying to get some studying done by being a night owl

Starting on Neuro and KLN Path after an hour or so.

Hope everyones prep is going good and thanks for following up with my updates and giving me feedback!

Thanks. I just reviewed the block. Made a couple stupid mistakes ... did the calculation wrong, misread the question etc etc.

How are you doing with your schedule? What are you working on this week?

Well.. I kinda didn't end up following the schedule this week... I ended up doing a few things from the schedule and went back to some of the old chapters/courses and started annotating them to FA since I didn't do them in the beginning of my prep. It's very time consuming.. Mainly goljan's RR.
But I just changed a few things in my schedule.. I should be done by the 9th of May (Hopefully nothing goes wrong this time).

Oh ok. Annotating FA always takes a long time! Mine isn't annotated too much but I have notes here n there. I have a whole set of UW notes to go through still. Good luck with your schedule. Are you or did you take an NBME yet?

I think I will try to take an NBME this week and start DIT by May 1st (dwiqed starts then too so I'll have a DIT buddy )

I am a day or two behind my schedule coz of stupid Neuro .. But I'll try to catch up! I'll update in about 2 days on my progress (hopefully have neuro finished by then along with the 100 cases of Medical Ethics).

I didn't take any NBMEs yet... I am hoping to take it at the end of this month or right after I finish on may 9th.. We will see..
I am thinking of starting DIT on may 1st (as planned earlier) but may be I will watch a video or 2 for a day while I do kaplan on the other side... Not sure yet...
100 cases of medical ethics should take you abt a day or 2 max if you js do that alone..

Nice that's good.

I am editing my schedule and adding/removing stuff...lol

Finished with Kaplan Path (3 chapters). Reading Behavioral 100 cases now.

I found Neuro to be my excuse for procrastinating. I find things to do and keep myself occupied when it comes to starting Neuro My goal is to finish Neuro by Wednesday.

I took a wrong turn in my sked yesterday. Now, I left behind half of genetics and 120 patho questions unfinished. This do-everything-in-2-weeks is exhausting!!

Nice. Good luck!

I am starting my day now!
Last two days, my sleeping schedule has been way off

Oh well, coming up with a schedule for the next 5-6 days and trying to add in Micro, Neuro and Biochem in it. Gonna try to review as much of it as possible then take the NBME and then start DIT *sigh*

My sleeping schedule has been pretty good this week.. Have been sleeping 12-1 and waking up 5-7. And an hr nap sometime during the day.
Completed GI Physio videos. Now annotating FA.

Good luck with the new schedule

Sleeping and waking up late. But don't seem to be productive during the night.

Waking up 5-7 is amazing! lol I wish I could do that. Do you find it productive to wake up that early?

Thanks. My new schedule is here : Exam in 1.5 Months; Study Schedule!!

Time to leave this thread behind and post updates on a new one

Damn another thread??? I have to follow that now
Waking up 5-7 does seem to be productive.. I used to study at night all these years because the nights were more productive than the mornings.. But now it has changed.. I started the GI videos at 6 am and finished them in 2 hrs or so. I did have them in 1.5 speed and sometimes faster than that when fischer makes those crazy jokes!
If the nights aren't so productive for you.. Just start pushing urself to sleep a few hrs earlier.. It will be hard to fall asleep/wake up in the beginning. I know the first few days I was js on bed with eyes closed telling myself "SLEEP! SLEEP" for hrs.. But eventually it works. When you start sleeping early you will wake up early.. Mainly when you think "All those students who are taking their exam in July and August are waking up and studyn 12 hrs! I should get up and catch up with them if I am gonu take my exam in June!" Try it! U will feel guilty n wake up n go to books
Oh ye plus I go to the gym for an hr in the morning.. So I need to tell myself to get up early if I want to go to the gym (before the morning traffic).
