Planning Exam in 2 months; Study Schedule !!

Hey guys,

I needed some help and advice from everyone regarding my study plan for the next 2 months. My eligibility period ends on June 30th and I want to be prepared for my exam by the May 30th! (that's my goal).

I got held up past week because I got hit with the flu and I have been very sick. I wasn't able to study as much as I used to and it slowed things down. Well here is my plan moving on forward -

**Doing Kaplan Qbank as much as I can while following this plan**

1) Starting with the three P's:
I finished off Pharm and Physiology in the month of March.

2) April 5th to April 15th: Pathology
-sources: Pathoma Videos + KLN (my own notes on Kaplan Book)
-I don't plan on using the Pathoma book because it will be a "new source" and for now I just plan on watching the videos. That way I will also save time and may be I can watch the videos for a 2nd time at a faster speed.

3) April 16th to April 25th: Work on Weak Areas
I will be using Kaplan Lecture Notes for all of these.

-Neuro: also using HY Neuro - this will prolly take me 3 days.
-Micro: Viruses (1 day)
-Beh. Sci: Biostats (0.5 day)
-Genetics, Immunology (1 day)
-Phys: Renal, Cardiac calculations (2 days)
-Path: Msk/Skin disorders, GIT Disorders (1 day)
-Pharm: Antibacterials/virals, Adrenergic pharm (2 days)
-Biochem: A few key enzymes, GSD's (0.5 day)

This will take me about 10 days to cover all these smaller topics. These are my weak areas so I will focus on these and review them from KLN.

4)April 26th: Give an NBME !!

5) April 27th: Start DIT !!

So this is my basic plan for the month of April. I am aiming to work on Pathology and other weak areas and use Pathoma and KLN & HY Neuro. I will give an NBME at the end of this month, around April 26th or 27th. I am giving myself 1 or 2 days worth of leeway in case I don't stick to the plan strictly!

After the NBME, that will give me a good indication of where I stand and no matter what after that, I will start DIT. Hopefully, DIT will bring up my averages in Qbank and NBME and I can assess myself again with another NBME in mid-May.

Please give me advice on the following:
1) Do I need to follow the pathoma book? Or is it ok if I don't use their book but still watch the videos at least 2 times?
2) Which NBME should I give at the end of April(before DIT) and in mid-May (after DIT) ?
3) Are there any other weak areas that are high yield that I should add to my list to cover during the 10 days ?

Thank you. Your advice and suggestions will be very helpful!

Wink

Sounds like a great plan do NBME 11 or 12 before DIT and NBME 13 after DIT (they say 13 is the hardest so do the hardest in the end)
Eventho i didnt do them I only did 7.. Youll be ok!

Q1: Sorry... I don't know about pathoma. Ask Dr. Nick. Hehehe!! He's a big Pathoma fan.

Q2: If it's your first nbme, you can try Dr. Nick's suggestion in another thread: form 5. It's also what I'm going to use as my first online nbme "to test the waters" and as my baseline before I go jump to the "hard-core" ones. However, if you're going to take an nbme at the end of April, since it's close to the exam, you might want to start with form 11 (pre-DIT) then, 12 (post-DIT). I read it from a recent post by Nouman. I just can't remember which thread. To those who remember, did I get the forms right? Or was it form 12, then, form 11?? Or you can also do as XpaezX said...

Q3: Other high-yield areas? Hmmm... For me, the mode of inheritance (XR, AR, etc) of the common diseases for genetics, receptors (which ones are Jak-Stats, cAMPs, etc.) for molecular bio, water-soluble vitamins and the enzymes they co-factor for biochem, cystic fibrosis for patho, Gs/Gi/Gq rec for pharma. You probably know this already, but anyway, there's also List of Forgettables in the Recommended Threads...

Thanks for the suggestions dwiqed!

I got all the pathoma information from dr.nick and that's why i decided to do it As for the NBME's I'm still not sure which ones to do but thats to be decided later on. Thanks for the suggestions on other high yield areas! I will include the ones I feel weak on I want to take finish this and take the NBME after and see where I'm standing and hopefully DIT will improve my score by 10-20 points.

Other than that, is there anything missing in my study schedule? This study schedule is just till middle of may ... if i follow it up, I will still have a month and a half till my eligibility period ends so hopefully my NBME's go well .. then i'll be less stressed!

You should start from your weakest areas, stuff that u dont like.
I am on the same time frame, starting Genetics today.
I hate genetics.
Than Ill do biochem - I guess I hate it too!!
And after that Neuro - fun, but I never gave a full power to it.

On top of it, I am going to read goljan RR every day and listen to his lectures while doing housework or at work. At the end of April I'll take NBME 5 and then give a full run to all subject using my FA and notes from qbanks that I made to it (2 thick moleskine notebooks)

Then after this marathon Ill take last nbme and give hardcore kickass revie for 3-5 days and go take the FUSMLE

This is my revised TAUS method.
I am not advertising it, just showing my approach to kick the hard and weak areas the most

Sounds good. I think I want to get Pathology out of the way - that way I've gone over the 3 P's thoroughly! Once that is done - I will work on my weak areas .. I'm not set on starting DIT till I finish reviewing my weak areas. I will also try listening to goljan .. at least a lecture per day .. but I want to do some questions per day as well... So if it gets too overwhelming then I will definitely choose questions over goljan. I've listened to a the first 5 chapters of goljan so far.

I've gone over UW before. I made very detailed notes when I was going through it the first time. I will use those notes after my DIT run ..UW Notes + FA + Qbank .. that's most likely going to be my plan after DIT (in the last 20 days before my exam).

There are no guarantees in passing unless you did UW with 70 cumulative.

Show Teeth

my friend all u need to know is concepts.

dont use uw as testing tool

use it as learning tool

they concentrate on the high yeild stuf that we need to know for the exam.
if u do kaplan Q bank, they ask u the wierdest thing on earth, wich might make u feel good tht u knew it, but they are not gonna test u on those!

so 1 wants to study to just get tons of knowledge, every 1 wants to clear out the exam with a high score!

please kindly check other exam pass outs how they prepared!

Hey,

Hows your preparation going? Hope its coming along good.
How is your progress on Qbank? I am going pretty slow with the Qbank right now since I am focusing on reading more. Share your plan if you've made one!
Let's keep each other motivated

Good luck!

You make it sound like UW is the only thing you need to know for the exam! Not true! UW is good but so is Qbank. Both of them are recommended qbanks!

Also, just cause I did UW didn't mean I was going to ace the exam. My aim was just to pass it and go to Step 2 but sadly I didn't pass ... which I realized is better than passing with a low score! So, I have no regrets and I made a bad judgement call earlier and also had some family pressure to write the exam as soon as I could.

But moving on now, I've come a long way and prepared better than my first time around. I don't feel like I need to UW now since I've already done it once...

Thanks for your input though.

Agree!!
Uworld helps.. But its not the only thing thats going to make u pass or Ace it. Alot of people have other circumstances to consider why they failed/passed.

Hope2pass ur first study plan here sounds great!
I think I might be starting DIT later than planned as well. Since I am going over Golgian now.. And I couldn't study for almost a week bz I got sick!

Read TAUS method its very good.
First read of the shitt that u have (KLN or whatever) and explain the FA, anotating everything in there that is indufficient, 2nd read - only fa with the eannotations u made - 3rd read - fa (memorizing)

these videos drain me of all my energy
Hope2pass i will soon come up with a plan
just want to finish those 3 subjects
docsikorski read the taus method
thanks for suggessting today only i was wondering
what to do about FA
it requires paramount effort to annote FA
when i read KLN its fine BUT when i see the same thing in FA
so much is missing (eg the pharma side effects)
i am feeling demotivated today

1- Unlike Kaplan where you can watch the video by itself or read the KLN without the videos, Pathoma videos are extremely integrated. You should do them together not separate. Watch the videos with the book open because at times he references the book, and it gives you a clear outline.

Hey I feel the same about annotating FA My FA has SOME notes in it but its not unbinded and full of extra notes or anything like that! When most people start off FA in the last 2 weeks to a month of their prep then how do they annotate FA ? ... Anyways, I haven't made too many annotations from KLN .. just a few points here and there. Rest of the FA has a lot of highlighting and underlining from multiple reads.

thanks for suggessting today only i was wondering
what to do about FA
it requires paramount effort to annote FA
when i read KLN its fine BUT when i see the same thing in FA
so much is missing (eg the pharma side effects)
i am feeling demotivated today
feel like crying
Finally! Someone like me that has no clue on what to do with all the extra info that are in other sources and NOT in FA.

It drives me nuts. I always want to stop what I'm doing, and do it the way my friends are doing (which is annotating FA) but I just can't. I always get bogged down with the fact that there is so much in other sources and if I were going to write every little detail then might as well just keep revising my main source.

Taus method, however, can help us because he doesn't send you to annotate every single source. He specifically mentions that books like RR, BRS physio, and Molecular Bio, must be just read in full without annotating. Dr. Goljan says it himself, too.....you'd be transferring absolutely everything. In addition to those books that Taus mentioned, I personally will not annotate Biochem (because it's the most difficult subject on FA but one of the easiest on KLN + vids) and Pharm (because I want to write what Dr. Lionel Raymon says on my KLN and keep that with me as a jem).

I guess I won't be annotating anything after all, huh?

That said, I do believe that annotating into FA is by far the best method, granted you have the time for it. You really energize your brain deciding on what words to use to make it concise, yet understandable. In the end, even though you wrote it, you probably won't even have to see it because the method alone bypassed all the memory fields in our brain (obviously haven't done neuro yet) to be jammed into where we need it---the concepts area (I really gotta start neuro).

I am not sure abt the last 2 weeks.. But right now I am annotating FA after reading each chapter in Golgian and Kaplan.. Man! My FA already feels like its going to run outa pgs for those chapters (RESP, CARDIO,etc).

i have the same story as yours, got my results last Wednesday 178/78.I failed, till today it was like a hell unable to decide what to do,finally made my mind and thought never give up and decided to continue.

hey sorry to hear about your exam results.
I was devastated after i found out my results as well but there's nothing you can do! Its better to have failed once than to have passed with a really low score. So just gotta be positive!

when is your exam now and what is your study plan?

Default Update

Here's an update:

- Finished the first 10 chapters of Path in KLN
- Have watched about 3 hours of pathoma so far at 1.4x .. I have 22 hours to go .. planning on watching 3 hours today
- Doing Qbank questions .. scoring around 50% in physio and pharm.

Just did a block of 46 questions in PHYSIO ... did HORRIBLE! I got 39% and it dropped my cumulative overall as well. The first 20 questions took me 33 minutes Then the rest 26 questions I had to rush through as I had literally a minute per question ... Main weakness was renal and cariac physio ... so reviewing the questions now and then going to watch the pathoma videos.

That's all. Hope everyone's prep is coming along good and according to their plan!

Do forms 11 and 12 for sure, only do 7 if u have time. Here is why http://www.usmleme.com/NBME-self-assessment-exams

Only other advice is to Make sure to do each in timed mode and concentrate on doing a ton of questions from uworld..

doing Kaplan Qbank.

Its been a while since I did a full 46 question block and randomly tried one today so I was realllllyyy slow and then had to rush through the last half of the block. I will see my weaknesses after review. So far I am keeping up with my study plan/schedule and hopefully I can be done Pathology by the end of next week!

@Hope2Pass: I've started kaplan qbank today (diagnostic test). Doing them random, timed.

@Sukar: I'll do an nbme soon too. I'm not very prepared as much as I like, but I'll do one by April 18. Probably nbme 5 (I'm going with Dr. Nick's advice). I might also do DIT + qbank some time on May. I'm still thinking which qbank I'll use with DIT [i.e. uworld (2nd pass), kaplan qbank, or usmleconsult...]

@DocSikorski: How's your usmleRx + TAUS going? I'm about to start (modified) TAUS too... Taus looks great, by the way. The integration of topics makes studying TONS more interesting.

I'll just vent a bit... about pesky little subjects.

I just finished bolstering my weak major subjects using kaplan videos and uworld (2nd pass on those subjects only).

I did kaplan diagnostic test to see which ones are my NEW weak areas. (The kaplan website can be slow at times that I fell asleep during the test! Good thing the kaplan website actually stopped loading so my time didn't run out.)

Turns out my new poor areas are those pesky little subjects again (i.e. genetics and biostat)! Personally, I feel they are very hard to retain. Unlike in patho or micro where once I memorized them I can retain them for a good 2 months, these minor subjects tend to have very short half-lives. (Add immuno to the list of forgettable subjs for me, btw.)

Like DocSikorski said, start with the subjects we hate. I'm starting (modified TAUS) with genetics, biostat, and physio calculations. But I hate calculations/inheritance diagrams so much, I don't feel like studying them...

I thought you said that it was best to do Kaplan qbank 1st and UW 2nd. Is this right?

Yep, kaplan qbank first then uworld is the best way to go. It has been also polled here: http://www.usmle-forums.com/usmle-st...an-uworld.html

I started with uworld because of time constraints in my original study schedule. I had to choose which one to prioritize in case I run out time, so I did uworld first. I began uworld in January and planned the exam in March. However, I eventually decided to extend my eligibility period.

Uworld is a great qbank to tackle especially when you're very prepared already. This is because it's hard and integrates everything. Kaplan qbank is a much simpler qbank. It's a good stepping stone to use before uworld if you have time.

Hey guys,

Another update:

-Pathoma: 18 hours of video left (watching it at 1.4x)
-KLN: haven't read since last time (10 finished, 19 chp left)
-Qbank: Reviewing and trying to do some questions

I am focusing more on watching pathoma videos and finishing my reading for KLN but it takes a while! I can't seem to fit in time to do the questions but I guess I am going to try and finish Pathology by Sunday. Then according to my plan I will start working on my weaknesses and spend about 10-15 days on those. NBME date still set for end of April as long as I finish everything on time!

Hey Hope, why are you doing KLN? I thought that many ppl always took that book off their lists and just dealt with RR or (recently) the pathoma book.

Anyways, thanks for updating us on everything. It really helps to know what the crowd is doing.

Are you jotting any notes down from pathoma? I plan to do pathoma but also listen to Goljan...Like back to back. Did Goljan once. Now I'm just filling in the little subjects and major ones like biochem, micro and pharm.

Keep us updated!

I am doing KLN because I have notes in them from Dr.Cone's videos/live lectures and I thought it'd be a nice supplement to Pathoma .. also because then I wont have to go through Pathoma book (a new source).

I am not taking any notes. Here's what I do: I read from my notes/KLN and then watch the videos in Pathoma at 1.4x. Once I am done all of KLN and Pathoma videos I am going to spend some time on my weak areas/subjects and then take an NBME (by april end) ..then I will either watch DIT, watch Pathoma at 1.7x again and or listen to goljan lectures. I plan on doing all three of those in May actually. Is that a good plan? DIT will cover ALL subjects+FA, Pathoma and goljan will cover Path and since they integrate a lot of other subjects like biochem, physio, pharm ..that would be a nice review as well.

Also, I will continue doing Kalpan Qbank along with everything else.

My plan is to once I finish off my working on my weak areas/subjects then I will switch it to RANDOM, TIMED test mode. Right now im doing it Subject wise (pharm/phys) but timed test mode.

Hey guys,

I have a question for you....I know most of guys in this thread are PATHOMA hardcore fans.this is going to be my 2nd attempt,i have read Goljan pathology RR before and i had trouble reviewing that book towards the end of my prep and close to exam date.it was too vast and even with 3 reads i had difficulty remembering it,you know what i mean.
i want to know how are the other options for Patho,i hear a lot abt Pathoma and some guys even did BRS patho and scored 240+ and says its was a bless that they have read BRS patho.
guys please advice me what to pick for patho...as it is going to be a book which i am going to stick to.thank you....

@hopetopass

hi buddy, looks like your going on well with ur plan. Congrats.
may i ask you?
since you are doing Kaplan Qbank, did you find there are important concepts that uw did not cover? But is explain in Kaplan Qbank?

I am asking you thins, because you have already done uw, so thought you might be the right person for me to ask.
thanks

am still doing uw, once am done with it, if i got some time left, was thinking of starting kaplan Qbank too

Yeah, I think that once I'm done with kaplan videos I too will do Taus.

Taus himself said it took him aprox. 10 weeks, but I think Taus is a genius, so it'll take me much longer.

But yeah DocSikorsi, how is Taus coming along for you? Can you detail so far what you have done and how cumbersome is it?

Thank you.

Hey, I would say KLN Pathology, Pathoma, FA, Goljan audios, UW/Qbank .. these are the sources you need for pathology. It should be enough for pathology.

I have only done like 10% of Qbank so far. Still working on it and plan on working on it more after I take my NBME. I'll have more time to devote to questions after that since till my NBME I want to just focus on getting through everything once more. Kaplan Qbank is good though. But once i finish more of it, i'll be able to compare it to UW better.

Update:

Haven't been able to do any Qbank questions lately but I'll start doing them once I finish Path. Got 3 full days of the weekend ahead to finish everything!

-Read 4 chapters of KLN today.
-Watching videos of Pathoma and trying to finish 2 hours tonight.

Goal for the next 2 days -->
- Read 9 Chapters (doable)
- Watch 11 hours of video (tough stretch, gonna try my best)

Update -

The weekend went by really slow! Couldn't get much done this weekend but here's what's left -

- 6 Chapters to read
- 7.5 hours of videos

Going to read 2 more chapters tonight and try to watch at least 2 hours of videos.

I am still going to stick to my original plan and start on my weak areas from tomorrow. I will just finish Pathoma and KLN Pathology in the next day or two along. Here's the plan -

Monday: Genetics
Tuesday - Thursday: Immunology
Friday - Sunday: Neuro

I'll try to finish Pathology videos/kln by Tuesday or Wednesday.

Any suggestions?

Hey, thanks! I've seen that link before.

Actually my plan isn't expensive at all...except for the Pathoma and Qbank Subscription...which is necessary since I don't want to the Qbank offline and Pathoma is worth it and its only $100 for 12 months !!

For DIT, I have the videos and the workbook but I will decide on that later.

Also, I took a Kaplan Live Lecture course and have all their books and notes so I am supplementing those instead of watching the videos this time and rereading them for the weak areas.

How did you go through/revised/strengthened genetics? Reread kaplan book, watched kaplan video, or qbank?

It's the next weak subject on my list.

I read Kaplan (there is not a lot to read) and than did Lange flashcards and all the subject-wise genetics from Usmle Consult with an average of 70 % the rest 30 percent is weird random stuff anyway, so I am happy.

My confidence grows and expands as trinucleatide repeats within generations!

I add all the stuff to my FA'12 copy to go through it again before the exam. I use 2 hit Khudson's theory - I hit it once and then I memorize it! =)

That's pretty much what I plan to do as well. Just going to go over Kaplan Notes for Genetics and Immunology and then do questions from the Qbank!

Hahaha... I'm really looking forward to life after step 1 -- to days of drunken stupor! What's funny is that I already have plane tickets for my post-step 1 vacation BEFORE I even have a step 1 exam date with prometrics!

I'll be drinking by the beach watching the sunset in 2 months... Meaning I'm giving myself a chance to drown myself before I go back and start studying for step 2. LOL!!

Did you ever wonder if mixing powdered B1 vitamins with alcohol will offset W/K?

Did you ever wonder if mixing powdered B1 vitamins with alcohol will offset W/K?
They wont absorb =)

I hear you! For the past year I have been a couple times on the beach and in nice places due to work, but I had my KLNs or FA with me, so its not very much fun...

I wanna burn my FA when its over. Burn it or throw it away to grand canyon.

Well wait... I have 11' and 12' copies... I can do both...

By the way I drive no car - the bear that I ride is waiting for me on a parking lot and the summer is always a problem, cuz I just sweat my hat off...
=======

R u Indian?
I just came up with awesome dish receipt - we take a bowl, poor vodka and curry there, fire it up - you sing with echo effect and I dance my ridiculous russian dance and then we drink it.

D_wiqed calls an ambulance in a mean time...

LOL!! We do this while we tear up pages in our FA and throw it in the bonfire!! Nyahahaha... Great plan!

I like chili crab curry, by the way. The specialty dish they make in Singapore. Can we have that? Dr. Mexito will bring Dos Equis or Jose Cuervo.

Nope, I am not offended =)
I am kidding of course.

Though I do get offended when I see question in a qbank about a person from easter europe with cardiomegaly =)

Get an average person from a trailer park in Tennessee and do X-ray on them - there will not be any point of mentioning eastern europe...

Ah yes, I have to pick a date soon as well! I am planning on taking an NBME in about 10-12 days .. hopefully around April 26th/27th. So far I have been a little off from my schedule. I wanted to finish Path by the 15th but still have some left over so I am going to continue to path but at the same time start what's on my schedule for today too (i.e genetics).

How are you doing with your schedule ?

And tearing up pages in the FA sounds great! With so many FA's combined we can have a nice little Post-Step 1 bonfire and kick back with some dos equis as dwiqed suggested haha

I am a little behind in my schedule as well. But trying to catch up with it in the next 2 days.. I am going to try to take an NBME this weekend to see how that goes as well...

I'll just be taking a break to a remote island with a great beach. My country is composed of little islands so we need to ride planes to get from one island to another. (I guess when international companies categorize my ethnicity under "Pacific Islander" and not "Asian", they're being a bit too literal... )

I'll pick a date after I've done 2 - 3 nbmes by the end of this month. I'll take nbme 5 at the end of this week. If it's good, I'll take 2 newer nbmes at the end of the month and schedule. I'm thinking of taking the exam at the end of May or mid-June.

Looks like we're both taking nbmes in 4 days. Tandandandan!!! *scary music in the background*

Good luck to us!!
