Exam-Results Got my score....yea not that great

Got my scores yesterday and wanted posted since people have been so helpful to me on this forum (even though sometimes I do not say thanks, but I do appreciate all the help).

Score: 224, 82

Total prep: 4 months

NMBE from school: 188 (started to study after that)

NMBE 11 - 5 weeks before exam: 205 (55 wrong of which half I made stupid mistakes)

NBME 7 - 2 weeks before: 235

NBME 12 - 1 week before: 230

All online

I was hoping for 230+ but did not happen (really wanted to do surgery).

Used:
Kap vids (some of pharm, all of physo, some of Behav)
BRS Phys
Gojlan audio (did not have time to do all so did the big ones like Hem, cardio, renal, musk)
FA 2010 (4 times)
DIT 2010

Qbanks:
UWorld - 63% ( 2 times)
Kqbank - did in the subject I felt weak on towards the end with UWorld

Now the Test:

1) Is is doable (not sure what people meant by it till I took the exam). Trust me those 7 blocks will fly by once you hit your 2nd block. I was not tried at all the whole day. Eat some power bars between each pair of blocks and had half of those 5 hr energy shots.

2) The questions
- some where really straight forward (like which drug has this effect from the list that the patient is taking, or what does this term mean - so your 1st order questions).

- For each block I had some hard a*** that put uworld to shame in terms of hardness. I was getting angry at those BS questions. I had 10 LONG questions for each block that took up some time (I am talking about 10 lines plus questions and some with labs!!!). I think this what killed my score. I did read the answer choice 1st, then looked at last two lines of question then read the only thing so would know what think of, but that rarely helped on those 10 liner questions). Behav was also BS (a lot of questions where two of then seem right, or none seem right).

- I had about 10 questions told in cardio ( I thought it would be more since it is a HY system). Mainly questions for me were theory questions (Loads of them), micro, pharm, and physio. Lots of graphs and charts and of course all our favorite up an down arrows (thought I was getting vertigo when looking at it).

3) I did not think it was fair because of those 10 long questions for each block. But nothing I can do not but move on. My advice do questions either subject wise or random wise. All depends on how you learn. People will say "no you have to random and timed". I say that is crap since no point in doing random when you are weak in a few subjects that you have yet to cover (you waste questions and you will not understand the answer since you are weak in the basics for that subject). Towards the end of your prep you should be doing random time so your mind adjusts to that pattern. But initially do it the way you like and once you picked up all your weakness than hit random. That is what I did (not saying it will work for everyone).

Not great score, but I hope something I wrote will help someone here.

Thank you for the support.

For those last few days (I set my time that my 4th read started 2 weeks before the exam). I wanted to keep it fresh in my mind. What I did was I would do 1 chap a day in FA (I did the long Chap like hemi, biochem, cardio, micro.... 1 week before exam, and all the short chap like behav, physic, musk 1st). Pharm I was doing 2 subjects of pharm a day and kept review over and over and over again since Pharm is pure memorization. I recommend that you have a paper sheet and right down which subject you want to have fresh in your mind few days before exam. For me GI was a pain to retain so I studied that 3 days before exam that way on my exam date it was still fresh in my mind.

First of all, your score is really very good, so congrats I can only hope for your score!

Secondly, i just wanted to agree with your experience 100%. I didnt go into the exam with solid scores, but i thought i knew my stuff. Now it seems like, no matter how much you know, they will find a way to stump you!

Questions :

I got about 20% straight shot questions. Out of those straight shot, about 5% i didnt know the answer to ( weird anatomy questions, some weird molecular q's -- answers of which were not in First aid-- however, i KNEW FOR A FACT that i would not know the answer, no matter how much time i spend on the q, so i just picked whatever sounded right and moved on)

The other 45% were 2-3 step questions. I believe they could have been answered perfectly had i had enough time. As gear2d just said- there were q's that were 8-10 lines long + Labs. It was really annoying not to have the time to sit and think things through.

Left over 30% was just ridiculous. I mean i really didnt even know how to answer a few questions. I didnt even know what they were asking.

Overall i recall getting about 2 EKGs, 2 Heart sounds, 4 behavioral, 4 bio-stats ( easy). I got tons of GIT q's, very little repro ( i got tumors), 2 neuro qs, TONS of genetics, NO questions on 2nd messengers, 5 heme questions, a few onc drugs, basic renal path and 2 renal equations, 2 abdominal ct scans.

If there is anything i can help with, let me know. But just accept that on the day of the exam there are going to be tons of questions that you just dont know how to tackle. Dont waste time on q's that you know nothing about- save that time on maybe questions where time will make a difference. Good luck

I felt the biggest mistake was not re-reviewing neuro and Cardio on delay bases (should have reviewed again say every other weekend). Could have saved time towards the end of prep.

Thank you pkul85 for the support. Have faith that you passed with good score. I felt kinda down after the exam was over when I was recalling questions in my head (all my friends, 7 of them, felt the same). When did you take the exam? Let us know what you get, I think you'll do better than me for sure. I think I must have lucked out and gotten a lot harder questions. But, each exam is graded differently. Someone here in this forum felt like they failed since questions were way harder than uworld or nbme and he ended up getting 240+.

I had at leat 2 that where about bone and if HCO3 Inc/dec, osteoblast Inc/dec, osteocyte Inc/dec.... They had things never thought of associating with bone.

Had some on ANS drugs with changed in blood pressure before and after giving drug x with say Epi. Lots of graphs on pharm in general of before and after affects with 2 or more drugs.

Other graphs included things from lung with Inc/dec in fev1, fvc, TLC...

Felt like overall like charts and graphs from uworld. But step for me went the extra mile to include things I never thought could be associated with that disease. Some answers right off bat you could tell that this is not possible. Other you had think about because its one of things you know or don't.

Yeah I agree, some theme questions -coag and bleeding time questions, I Knew the answer wasn't possible with the pt\ptt info they gave me, ugh. I initially thought it was just my nerves kicking in and I was getting confused. But then, I came back to the question a little while after and it still didn't make any sense!I came out sooooo pissed!

Also, I definitely blanked out on a few questions -i totally forgot acyclovir went with thymidine kinase and that eclampsia is associated with infarction. I didn't know that cipro is used to treat anthrax. So, honestly, I'm really scared. I walked into that exam with 205 on nbme 11 and 198 on nbme 12 about 1.5 months before my exam. There was no way in hell I was gonna postpone it, so I figured I didn't want to bring myself down by doing another nbme too close before my exam.

Looking at your score, now I'm super scared because you did a few points below your nbme score so I'm super duper confused. I didn't pass once already, so all I can do is try to distract myself for the next few weeks and get my mind off of it :sorry:

Thank you for the support samba. For the Kap LN I really did not use that much. Only time I would use them is if I was not understanding something and need a new source to go to. So I did not spend too much time on them. The only notes I avoided were the path ones (was not that great in my opinion). Also, I felt videos were good enough in terms understanding and info that rarely I need to hit the notes. For pharm all my friends use to tell me that for steps it will straight from FA (I did not believe them since UWorld gave me way different impression). So for pharm only focus on FA. For me, I had maybe 2 or 3 for pharm that were not straight forward, but if you now the MOA then you work from that to get the answer.

I know what you mean. But NBME will not say 100% you will pass or not. There are plenty of people that do well on NBME and do horrible on the Step. Or even the other way around. Have a friend that was getting 210 NBME and ended with a 230 on the step. Try you best not to thinking about till you have the scores. I hope you kill it this time around.

so sorry for that.
just stay positive & do well in step 2 & if u believed in your dream of being a surgeon u can still do it for sure. plus i think the time u took to do the exam was not long so imagine what u would have done if u took 6 month + like everyone, u would have scored 250 hehehe give yourself the credit of that.
prepare for step 2 & take your time & i believe u can do amazingggggg looking at the time it took u to score this number
stay positive please

Don't try to beat yourself up over your step 1 score (even tough it is not a bad score ) just try to rock CK and you'll get what you whant
remember that other things besides scores are also needed to get a residency
