Help Restarting my Step 1 prep

Hi to all.

I am an IMG graduated in 2010. I prepared for Step 1 for about 4-5 months and finally cancelled my exam because I had a low NBME score (340-184) 3 weeks to exam and UWSA (340-182) 2 weeks to exam day. I felt like I had not mastered the concepts in detail enough and now I want to restart my preparations from May 2012 for about 3 months and take the Step 1.

I am wondering what I should do to study effectively as I think I was not thorough enough the first time. I used the Kaplan videos once and went through FA 2 1/2 times...I also used Pathoma but went through only once and UWorld (averaged 50% overall mixed timed mode).

I hope to take my exam by the end of July 2012 but I am not sure where to begin this preparation. I plan on doing the Kaplan videos again especially for Physiology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology...then use pathoma for pathology...these seem to be my nightmares as far as weaknesses are concerned.

Help anyone...I think I need to post my progress here and get as much advice as possible as I am feeling very discouraged...

any advice would be greatly appreciated...

hello, i think the first thing u should do is to sit with yourself & make a goal score (better be high to motivate u & really work as hard as u can to get it) . second advice u should prepare yourself every time before starting a studying session by remembering your goal & imagining how amazing it would be to accomplish it.
as for studying methods , u can find almost everything thing u need to know in the (recommended threads) in step 1 section of this forum, find the resources u find well appreciated by people , especially who passed with good grades & study from them. & stay focused on your goal. also i think visiting this forum every 2 days will give u pushes to study harder & not forgetting why u r doing this. really i advice u to visit it alot.
that's all , i hope i helped

Well I started reading last year in June and planned to take the test in December but on October someone stole all my notes, laptop n FA. I was so devastated that I didn't read again for next 2 months n now I started in January again. So here is my suggestion to you. Don't read all Kaplan again. You can skip anatomy, micro , immunology n even pharma. Physio, biochem n patho r worth every second spent on them so plz do them really well no matter how long you take. Then read FA 5-6 times like 50 pages a day n of course uworld. It's good that u wanna take it in July buy don't risk. Once u go through all this, take NBME n evaluate yourself. Waiting another year is better than going for low scores. Good luck

Woah... that is ridiculous. If i may ask, how did it get stolen? Left in the lib? Sometimes im scared to leave all my stuff in the lib, while walking out for a break..

And on the other note.. I've been taking so many breaks in my studying, it hasnt even gotten to the point i need it to, in the past year. And yet, i still keep taking these long breaks and life keeps happening in the middle- cousins getting married, or moving countries. I wish it could all just stop so i can finally concentrate on just studying!! Im sure everyone has other things going on in their lives, i guess you just have to really be strong and let it all go??

Well it happened when I parked my car outside a store for 3-4 min n someone broke the windshield n took the whole bag. Now I don't write any notes n make them on google documents so that if it happens again, I won't lose my personal notes at least.

Wink getting somewhere

Hi to all,

so after trying to get past the confusion and stress and other things in life, I finally have found the grace and courage to start studying again...though it is 2 weeks later than I expected, I am glad to have started studying something.

So I subscribed for Kaplan Qbank for as long as necessary in order to use it to consolidate material as I study everyday...maybe try to do at least 50 questions everyday on the topic that I have covered...using it as a learning tool to really understand the concepts and then move on from there...

I have been reading every possible new post on the forum on the past month and it is really helpful...to know that there are thousands of people out there who are struggling like me and maybe even more and able to encourage each other through this journey is wonderful...I feel like part of a huge family though we have never met...thank you all so much for all the posts you write here...you may not know it sometimes, but reading all these posts helps people like me...

...I was really lost a few months back but after spending a lot of time praying and reading the stories here, I can actually forget about everything else and just focus on studying...

...I will start with physiology next week, using the KLN, Kaplan Qbank and FA to review the material...this is going to be my diary...hopefully, I do it right this time...

Show Teeth My Study Schedule for the next two weeks

This is what i plan to do...

Week 1 & 2 - Physiology
1 - KLN (I will watch the videos and maybe read from BRS Physiology too)
2 - Kaplan Qbank (50Q/day) subject wise
3 - FA along with Kaplan Qbank

After the first week, I will update my progress and hopefully, that will tell me what I can really accomplish and how to handle the next few weeks...I do not want to rush this thing so I will give myself up to 3 months to do all of my read following the plan above for each subject (except Pathology where I would use Pathoma and some Goljan)...then I tackle an NBME, do UWOrld for 2 or 3 months and plan my exam from there...

...this is it...this is the start of my new journey...no turning back...I can do this with the help of God Almighty...

...wishing you all the best in your preparations...

Hiya,

week one gone and not much has been covered...a little stress here and there and som sulking too but hey...I managed to go through the first 3 sections of Physiology in KLN...

so this week, my objective is to read through the whole of Physiology, and then do the Kaplan Qbank...hopefully, after that I would have some time, maybe one more week to read through BRS Physiology...it is really a good book and helps to consolidate the material from Kaplan..

Apparently that is the price to pay...some pay more than others but the key is stay focused on your goal no matter what...how far with your prep are you now...? when do you plan on taking your exam...?

Hi,
I've done one reading of KLN with videos, General principles Section of FA 2012 and 15% each of UW and Kaplan Qbanks.

These are the posts where I post my progress:

Schedule Exam in Aug last week
Test Aug 29: 14 Wks to go: next 7 days' schedule

Good luck for your prep. Since you have prepared once before, the material must look familiar to you.

WoW, you have covered a lot of ground there...that is awesome...good luck with your preparation for the next 7 days...I saw your thread and wooof....it is a lot to handle...

Yes I have prepared once but I want to forget that I have done it once and just do it again from scratch...that works for me, knowing that I know nothing and putting all my energy into it...like that I can do a lot more...

but yes, the material is familiar to me...I realize that I may have overlooked some things in the first round of my preparation and when I look at it now...honestly...I am glad I had not taken the test before...I am so certain now that my preparation the first time was so faulty...there is no way I would have made it...but that is life...it has taken me a year to get to this point and there is no stopping now...

All the Good luck with your prep. You will surely catch up with your prep and do really well on your exam.

As for my schedule, I had bitten more than I could chew and that is how we learn. Therefore, I have modified my schedule for this week.
I was also very slow to start with but this works for me now. I put in about 7.5 - 8 hrs to finish all that. Sometimes I'm not able to finish everything for the day but I try never to miss my daily quota of question banks.
I will do a 2nd read of KLN with my question banks once I finish 1 read of FA and I will take a Self Assessment next week to focus on my weak areas although I've a fair idea of my weaknesses from the question banks already.

Keep posting your progress.

See this link.
Share your tricks on how to keep going
I have a very punctuated day and week. Even then I burn out once ~ every 3 days

well well well...thanks y'all for the encouragements....

taking a break every now and then definitely works for me...I do not study all week...at least one day off but still trying to hit 8 hours of study every day. I am not doing the question banks just yet as i still have a lot of material to cover...hopefully by the start of next week when I think I will be completing KLN Physiology, read a little BRS and review FA with my Kaplan Qbank.

Courage guys...courage...we shall get there...it is painful but worth the while...

Default New Plan

So here...I have decided to try something new and see what it gives...

I will do the USMLE Express videos then read FA and Pathoma along with the FA 2012 Workbook which is really awesome...

so for the next 5 days I will be doing MSK system and then do Kaplan Qbank questions after the system...

I have decided to give myself 6 whole months to study...go through FA and Pathoma and Kaplan and UWORLD as many times as possible (at least 2x) while taking NMBMEs along the way...

God willing, i should take my exam in late November or early December then it would be off to Step 2...yaaay...

I hope we all are making progress...
