the new 280 question exam score

Hi guys

I am wondering how the score of the new 280 question exam will be compared to the old 308 question exam score ???

If you made 50 wrong answers for example ... how it will be the same ? ( 308-50=258 ... 280-50=230 !! )..... I know that not all questions are counted and not all are with the same grade but how it will be the same??
Or it should be different as I think ... and if so, how will applicants be equally compared to each other if both did the same on exam but they scored different because of the questions number change?

anyone have any idea ??!!

I think its all about percentiles rather than marks of individual scores . I guess the 3 digit score is just a percentile with 230 mean and SD of 20 . So the decreased questions will still give the same value

your guess makes sense...and hens the passing score won't change and 250+ and 260+ will be attainable

I missed about 35 questions. I scored 258. I would say to get a 260 you can miss no more than ~30. So in 280 question format you must get 250 questions right

we all are guessing ... nothing for sure I think ... but the sure thing is that we all have to dig harder and harder

The official website says the new and old format scores will be comparable. The number of correct answers game is a pure speculation. You just have to do your best and cross your fingers hoping you get a good score.

One interesting thing is that the number of questions is not fixed anymore. 280 is the maximum number of questions you will get on the test. Most of the people will get less than 280 questions. The time has not changed meaning that they probably increased the length of the questions. I hope the question banks adapt to the new format before I have to take the test.

We should have more information when people actually take the new format. Last summer was a total mess. When the question number got reduced to 308 the first people that took the test whined for weeks about how unfair it was. I hope it is not like that this time around and we get some good feedback and advice.

becoz in have scheduled my xam on may 11, and totally confused if i have to give on that day or reschedule it before 9th may

yes unfortunately this happened to me, i took the test 3 weeks after they updated the question pool and my exam was indeed a mess.
question were nothing like i have prepared for and i was constantly feeling the test was meant for a basic science PhD, for instance there was 2 questions of subtypes of CYP450. funny thing now that i watch kaplan vidoes they tell you with confident that it wont ever show up on test like that! well it did!
there were also a few syndromes that i have never heard of anywhere, which of course i dont remember the name.
none of the questions were straight forward, questions were so long that i kept scrolling down to get to the bottom of the question..just to find a twist which made everything that i read absolutely useless and irrelevant to the answers.
i never had timing problems during mock tests, but in the real test i ended skipping 3-4 questions in each block.
wish you a better luck with you test buddy

thanks for taking ur time to reply .when did u take ur xam? was it after the reduction of q to 308? what was the score? becoz though u felt the exam to be difficult, it is usually evaluated based on the percentiles right, so if u had problem with the type of new q pool then all those who have given the exam during that time would also have had that same problem, so how was ur score.
I am really confused becoz my exam is on 11th may and the change will be implemented from 9th may. so not able to decide whether to move the date before 9th.

i took my test on may 29, and i had no clue they were going to update the question pool.
my score was horrible, i failed. and im no dummy! i never never thought it would happen to me. funny thing i kept saying i was gonna fail after the test ans no one would believe me. but i did! I FAILED.
when i started a thread and became vocal about it more people came out who had the same experience with the test around the same time, but as i read threads after that something definitely changed, you dont see anyone posting a success threat around that time.
im not sure how the degree of difficulty is going to be measured on questions that are very new in the pool, particularly when the results will be ready soon. how would they know how other people are gonna do on those questions when only a few took the test before mine and after the pool update?
i dont know the answer to that.
but here is my advice for you my friend, had someone given me a hint on that i would not have taken the exam when i did. either take it before may 9 or way after.

hi! congratulations on the awesome score! so quick question, I am currently in clinic and not letting myself check my score until I'm home because I can't handle that kind of emotion in public (either good or bad). But I wanted to ask if you actually counted about 35 wrong or if you are just guestimating and possibly overestimating that number, because when I came home from my exam I sat down and looked up every question I could remember that I wasn't 100% sure on (I'm crazy I know), and I also counted almost 35 either wrong or possibly wrong (couldn't find a definite answer either way online) and about 40 correct. I was hoping to get some more insight from you (and maybe your nbme scores?) to have a better idea what to expect, because while I was scoring with my average around your actual score, I felt absolutely terrible after the exam, especially after counting some seriously stupid mistakes along with the wtf questions I also got wrong. So any info you can give will be incredibly helpful in keeping this temporarily insane med student going until this evening would be so greatly appreciated. Again congrats on the awesome score!!

That's right. I had 268 questions on my test (took it on June 28). I scored 245 what is 91.4%, so not bad, but I'm really worried about how the specialty programs will compare the new results with the ones form old format. I hope it's gonna be a reasonable and fair method...
Regarding the length of questions - they were not that long, as I always had 5-12 minutes left to the end of each block, so I could check the answers I wasn't sure.

How do you know about that 91.4%? 245 is not the number of correct answers. Scoring is more complicated on the USMLE. If 245 were the number of correct answers then you would have been at a disadvantaged compared to the person that had 275 or 280 questions. NBME has its own scoring system that is not known to the public.

I think fewer questions make the test harder.
