Smile Avash.nrs Exam Experience

Well as I start to write this, I can only thank wholeheartedly the friends I made in this forum and this forum as a whole bcoz it has been my only source of communication during the last 3 months..
First about me: I am an IMG (like most of the people here and besides that i am a very very ordinary student in the final year of a medical school (still haven't completed my final year and have internship to do as well).

Preparation time:
7 months (4 months on and off in my 3rd year) and 3 months of wholehearted study

Preparation material:
Kaplan lecture notes (2010)
Kaplan lecture videos (all except microbiology)
FA
Uworld (2 months and 7 days)
NBME 12 and 13 online
UWSA 1 and 2 online
Goljan patho exam (180 qs)
pics and ecg and MRI and heart sounds (here and there but the links are all in this forum only)
Conrad Fischer 100 cases

About the exam:
My exam was like mixed type..the qs ranged from everywhere, some hard, some real easy and others real hard (though i felt it was my lack of prep that i could not answer the middle and very difficult level qs)
though proper data i cannot give but roughly 60% of the exam was easy qs and 80-90% qs were from all FA+UWORLD (i even got 2 qs common line by line from UWORLD)and 1 qs i got common from NBME 11.its a really doable exam but provided u have the confidence and the preparation to do it.
I really lacked both of them and in the end i feel now i will get very low score. i dont know whether thats a common feeling i have developed recently but still i am not happy with my exam and specially some silly mistakes i made.
As far as qs of exam goes its absolutely like uworld and even less difficult than uworld, UWSAor NBME 12 and 13.i have heard all sorts of things about this exam being something monstrous but really its doable if u have done FA and uworld and know them like the skin of ur own palm and u can get high scores.I had 2 heart sounds, 2 ecgs and plenty of MRIs and histo pics but really u need not need to know much from the pics. the vignette is sufficient to give an idea about the diagnosis
as far as experimental qs are concerned i never felt there were any qs (though i know there give some)..but whatever they gave i must tell that everything (almost 90% of the concepts are in FA+UWORLD).

Regarding my exam experience:
Slept like 7 hours the night before, wasnt sleepy in the morning but really entering the prometric and at 19*C my eyes started to close..anyways as the checking procedure went over,i sat on the chair before the computer with a bundle of nerves and 1st 5 qs i just drew blank..felt like i dont know anything...pulled myself up and did the block, marked around 15 qs in that block..
2nd block :was slightly relaxed but still marked around 13 qs and after i got over took a break to wash my face and drink some coke
3rd block was like hell..just marked 15 qs in it and 4th block was easier comparatively with 10 markings
took a break, washed my hands and drank the whole redbull (i hated its taste but sometimes u have 2 swallow the bitter pills
5th, 6th, 7th block were all good and around 10 markings for each and i took break after each block in these 3 blocks
finally the test ended with some crap feedback data form fill up about usmle and prometric center and i felt relieved to at least sit out 8hrs through it..though i feel very depressed at the fact that had i read FA once more (i read it 3 times cover to cover) i cud have cut down on those errrors i made..
at present i am not hoping high, but really to say the truth it was a perfectly doable test and doing not well(i mean 220s) will be completely my fault.
As far as my assessment scores are concerned:
UworldQbank: 61%(first pass random timed blocks) and next the qs i got wrong in uworld
NBME 12 online(3weeks prior to exam):193/380
UWSA 1(2.5 weeks before test):224/510
NBME 13(3 days prior to exam):228/530
UWSA 2(2 days prior to the exam):247/640

was aiming for something in the 220s-230s..now not so optimistic about it

and one word: the software they use is pixel by pixel same as UWORLD qbank and please dont be scared with what the software or the computer program is..even the fonts and colors are the same

AND ALL THE BEST FOR THOSE WHO WILL BE TAKING THE EXAM

Congrats avash and thanks for sharing your experience.
If you have to compare with NBMEs, Uworld, UWSA 1, and UWSA 2, which one would be the closest one to the real deal?

nothing except going over FA 3rd time+UWORLD wrong qs...and 100 cases of conrad and KLN genetics..BTW the real exam of mine had 3 parasitology qs(like nbme 13 which also had parasitology qs)...and now i feel shud have given FA another read .all the best

yeah i marked them bcoz i felt unsure about the correct answer at that time...but going by NBME core pattern,a 70% correct rate only fetches around 210...so i am just

yeah first read took some time for me 2...and frankly speaking during the final 3 months i did FA+uworld only and KME as well..and when i opened the KLN genetics 2 weeks before exam,i found it quite helpful(though most of it appeared new to me)..uworld 2 months is enough..u will be all good..good luck

avash, thanks for posting your exam experience. I feel related to you because i am a very ordinary student trying to do step 1 by the beginning of 4th year. But i will take what you felt or wish u should have done & be 100% prepared & ready. I know we ordinary students can do it, i believe u will get a good score because u deserve it as u read all these stuff u mentioned & did FA 3 times.
So please relax & enjoy your free-of-anxiety time.
Wish u all the possible success. Thanks again.

well thats where i feel i got stuck..biostat 2-3 qs that were like wtf to me..not like uworld and found it harder than that(i had no clue about them whatsoever)..but others like pharma were easy and graphs were quite like kaplan and FA...

it was anatomy qs that were mostly not in FA(expected bcoz anatomy is such a vast thing and FA has just some glimpse of it..and some ds like disc herniation that were heavily tested on my exam and i cud not find in FA..and oh...4 qs in parasitology(really thats awry considering that USA has low incidence of parasites)..but i got 4 qs from parasitology...3 qs and 1 pictorial(identify the ova blah blah blah)....and some biostat problems and some weird graphs of black americans and white americans data demographic statistics(full crap were those)...others were things almost all written in FA

Default Score Jump

What did you between your first NBME 12 (3 weeks before) -- 193
&
UWSA ( 2.5 weeks) -- 224

I know UWSA overpredicts, but thats still quite big jump. How did you do that? What did you?

Hi!
Don't wry! 213 might not be the great but it is definitely not the worst. What is done is done. You problie got nervous during the exam or somfn... Aren't you taking step 2 soon? Just study well for that and do good on that. Don't let this score affect ur preparation for the upcoming exams. If you do better in the next one it will balance it out.
Good luck (y)

Hi, Avash... I'm sorry to hear that.

Be strong, bud. Great men in history suffered big disappointments and losses, but it's how they overcame and dealt with their misfortunes that set them apart from others.

This experience is a negative or positive one depending on how you'll make of it. It can be the end of the road, IF you'll let it. OR you can make this "road block", a building block for your success.

Take a break, do some soul-searching, then put this behind you. You know you can still get matched. When you become a doctor in the US in the future, you'll remember this moment as the one trial that you didn't let defeat you. The glory is still yours.

Good luck in the coming steps! Take heart!

Hey man... Its not the end until it's over. Give yourself some time to think and put yourself together, breath in the air, enjoy the wonderful miracle of life, and while you're doing that, think of this: You have passed one of the most "hatable" exams on earth, and you did it in "first try"... and then, like "Johnny Walker"... keep on walking because CK is waiting for you.

Be strong bud... don't let go... never, ever, ever, ever.... give up

A few days ago i saw a friend of mine who's due to start his IM residency.

Can't remember exactly, but his stats are
Step 1: 210's
Step 2: 210's
CS first time
One year research

Anything can be overshadowed.

Btw, 214 isn't a bad score at all!
Sure you were aiming higher, but that doesnt mean 214 isn't a good score!

P.S. It's a 90 in the old scoring system.

forums on usmle blurs the reality ,not everyone gets 240s in real life .so dont compare your score to the people in forums ,compare it with real life people.

Thumbs Up

Hey cheer up buddy....!!!!!I told you my story a few days back... didn't i???
I know u r not the kind to giv up.....so work hard!!!!!!get a good research....if you want something from the bottom of your heart....blv me you will surely get it....take my word....score a 260 in step 2 ck for me...take your time....u can do it.....!!!!!(and i'm not joking ....i've seen many people in the forums do it)

I for one know what you went through before and during the exam....i know the environment in which you took your prep....i'm from the same clg!!!!!

this is the time to prove yourself.....dont give up....let me tell you you will look much better with a s1 213 and s2 260 than the other way round specially when you are going for IM....take your time.....analize your flaws in the prep and go for it...

take care....and best of luck....(but i personally blv that u dont need any luck....u can do it yourself!!!!!!)

Abhrajitda....
