Angry very low step 1 score 205/78

I am an IMG from India, got my step 1 score today 205/78 and I am completely shattered as I think my residency chances are over !
I cried the whole evening.
just 2 months back I got acceptance for observership at Cleveland Hospital Ohio and was preparing to file for visa but I don't think there is any use since it's going to be extremely hard for me now to get residency in paeds.

May be I should focus on Indian PG now, I am just completely heart broken and don't know what to do next??
even if I try to work hard for step 2, what is the guarantee that I will get great score. I am just hopeless now.

Dear, you never know until you try. you might have 240 and end up not matching, just fight till the end

Your score is excellent for UWSA, bs I had 30 points difference bw NBme and UWSA 248vs219

Did you do any NBMEs at all?

thats not bad man. u can still match. why do u worry. just make friends, u know that no matter what people say about cut offs i know alot of people who place in surgery and wherever with like 200+scores, u just need to make friends with the director and have some research experience, i suggest u take 6mnth-1yr researching.

I have known ppl who barely passed n yet managed to get a residency! so dont take it to ur heart, m sure u gave ur best shot, but sometimes things dont wotk out the way they have to! It'l take time to get over, let it! but meanwhile dont get totally depressed about, think of ways u can improve ur CV. like somebody already suggested, try doing research assistantships, have seen some of my snrs who did research for around a yr n then match at really good hospitals even though they had low score! So yeah start working on what can be done ahead, evrything will be right one day! the Mantra is not to give up, no matter what!

Just go to Cleveland. You will get to know there is more to getting residency than just scores. And strong LORs play a major role too. Good Luck!

Hey Whiz, first of all, you won the exam. That's a big step, and you should be proud. Second, it shouldn't be the end, now that you have scores, you can always take another road i guess. Family medicine, you could also look for a research job, anything that get's you in the system. Also, once you are there you might find someone that could help you with LORs. I hope you recover for this one, and i'll see you in the CK forum, lets win that exam!
Another pointer: many community hospitals like MDs with residency experience, say 1-2 years of internal medicine etc.. you could always get into a residency back home, and apply being a resident or after. It's up to you, but it would be very nice to go to your elective, and talk to people there, they might advice you better.

Big congrats on passing. It is not the dream score (not many of us get that score we want), but I would take that observership if you still can. Anything that will get you into a hospital and have you in connect with other doctors will help you in the long run. I have 2 stories, thou not like yours, but having good relations with people in hosiptal can work

1) Friend who had a 220 who is a FMG got into general surgery because he made a good impression with his co-workers. Even the program director was going to deny him the spot, but the fact others he worked with kept putting in a good word for him. He ended up getting the spot

2) My cousin who is a DO with average score is now working after his residency in Tampa, Florida at the number 1 hospital in FL as a anesthesiologist (out of all applicants they get they only take about a handful) just because he knew people.

Do not give up. There are people that fail Step 1 and do extremely well in Step 2 and the other way around. There is no guarantee that if you pass step 1 that you will pass step 2. Step 1 is 50% knowledge and 50% luck (if you had all neuro question on your exam and you suck at neuro then off course you will get a low score, or if you great with neuro you will get a high score). So keep trying to make it to a program here in the US (if you decided that later after you are a doctor in India that you want to come here are you willing to go through more headache of settling here as a doctor all over again?). Just remember there are people here with 240s that do not get a spot for one reason or another, but that does mean you cannot get one. I hope you will not give up on whatever your goal was when you started to study for step 1.

Don't Give Up !!!

From my personal experience and from everyone's advice in this thread, what I learned is - you have to keep trying! You are not in a bad situation! You passed your step, you have US Clinical Experience lined up for you and perhaps once you get there you can make more connections and see what else you can do. Do good in your step 2 CK and good luck!

You didn't fail the test, you passed it!

Remember - "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take" - Hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky said that.

Basically, if you think this is the end and stop here...you might regret it down the road !!!

Thank you all for the nice words and motivation. The thing is recently my two friends who appeared for the test got 235 + so it feels like I am good for nothing. I know I was not completely focused for step 1 as I was in a dilemma for a long time whether to go for Indian PG or USMLE and that affected my preparation, but still gave step 1 anyways even though I was not satisfied with my preparation. I didn't do kaplan and goljan thoroughly but did first aid 2 -3 times.
Getting researches is not that easy and I don't know how to go for it. I had applied for electives to many places but just got an observership at Cleveland.
Since I could not get electives, getting research seems to be out of reach.

thanks a ton I know the only way I am left with is research experience but I don't know the procedure how to go for it and moreover I am not sure whether I will get one with this score. Since I applied for electives to many places but managed to get only observership then how can I make it to research.

For research, that I found was the best approach is if you had experience in flied you are applying for will help a great deal. Best way is to find a school, or even a pharmaceutical company and call them up. Are you still late for that observe-ship? If you can still do it then I would do it. That way you can ask around and get into research program.

yeah I did nbme 6, 2 days before, got around 200, I know I should have postponed or cancelled it but I was not left with any extension time.
one of my known who had given the exam said marking in mle is easier so I thought I can manage to get at least 220 but I don't know what went wrong seems bad luck

I completely agree with vaibhavmanu.
The way I see it, the residency directors won't base their opinions solely on a misstep: they have enough experience to know that bad candidates get lucky, and that decent ones can be having a bad day when they sit their tests.

Don't give up hope: one's options never completely run out.

Good luck to you
