Smile Happy Ending to mY Step 1 Drama

Hi Friends hope you remember me.I was one of the regular user of this forum when suddenly this happened Dropping performance close to exam date!.
Let me now introduce myself i am an img doing internship and am an average student.I started my prep in June 2011.
Material used were Kaplan LN, Kaplan Video ,RR,Gojlan audios,HY Gross anatomy,Kaplan Q bank,UW and FA.

I took 4 months for the first read.First 3 months i studied Kaplan LN with video and Pathology i did from RR which took one month. My 2nd read took me around 2 month.I subscribed for Kaplan Qbank to do subject wise and started my 2nd read along with FA.I subscribed it for the simple reason that i am not a person who can learn things passively. It has page reference of FA and i loved this fact.
After my first read came the time for my first NBME and i took form 6 got 219.....was fine with it as i had not started uw.After it gave prometric practice exam so that i get an orientation of the centre.......i secured 73%.Returned Booked my exam date for last week of december.Had around 4 weeks to do uw was tensed but decided to drop my internship for a month and study full time.Used to do 3-4 random timed block of uw each day and finished it with around 2 weeks before my exam.It was tough had to study for around 15 hours a day and take notes of uw.Now i gave a full read of FA and decided to give an form 5 and shockingly got 213!!.Was disappointed it was even low than my previous score....thought it could be a fluke ......had just 5 days left no time for another NBME..........delaying would had thrown me to debts of dollar with a high prometric exam cancellation fees.Had 12 hours left before cancellation and was skeptical about the exam......called one of my forum friend who that day had received his step 1 score,he advised me to postpone my exam and i really thank him.So after all the Drama seeing myself so nervous and low in confidence i postponed my exam one hour before the stipulated time and extended my eligibility period.

Now started the second phase of my prep.I was very much disappointed with myself. Not depressed but was confused what went wrong.Decided to take break and extended my UW eligibility period. I looked back at my prep to analyse where i went wrong just to find out that i was rushing through my last month of prep, when i was suppose to be stable i was up and down studying whole day with a pressure on my head and not at all enjoying my USMLE study which i was doing all through out.I was in internship year and time period of 6 months to study along with hospital work, for me,who is as slow as snail was not at all enough for me.

Now moving ahead towards my exam........started my second phase of study. Thanks to screwing of my extended eligibility form by my medical school, family affairs and tough orthopedics rotation my break period got prolonged for 4 weeks. Now i started freaking thinking i had forgotten everything.Pulled up my socks and started to do second time uw-only the wrong questions and revising FA.I completed this in just 15 days i was well versed with FA now.Gave UWSA1 250.Gave another read of FA in just 5 days UWSA 2 252..............was confident now.Worked on my weak topics gave NBME 7....... 235,2 days after form 11 .....235, Fred 84%.So just 2 days before my exam i logged in my NBME account to find form 13..........was confused to give or not to .Decided to give it and got 226.

One day before my exam could not study felt i dont know anything.Packed my bag with foods,Paracetomal and my bible FA.

I went to the centre at 8 am.The staff was very proffessional so you dont need to worry they will keep you at ease.

Skipped tutorial.
First block : was fine i was a bit nervous was able to finish with 8 min to spare.revised the marked ones and then took a break for 5 min.

2nd block : i felt it was relatively easy and i started thinking what's this.........why the people say that this exam is so difficult.
Took 7 min break

3 rd block: just one word what the heck are these questions.Man so confusing !!. I barely had time to finish it
break for 10 min just to ease me out

4th block : even more miserable so tough molecular stuff and also genetics.I started thinking dude you have missed several things to study !!
took break for 5 min

5th block : relatively fine but did not had time to review my marked questions.
break again for 5 min

6th block :started tiring also it was very lengthy block just barely finished. But fine for me
Again break for 13 min.

7th block :fine.Actually i was very tired wasnt trying to think just gave the answer on my first instinct.
Finished felt on the TOP OF THE WORLD !!

what i felt was this exam was a relatively tougher version of UW or Kaplan Qbank...I had many CT,Angiogram, histopath, even one ECG(had no idea about) and two easy murmurs. In histo path i felt there were very few questions where they didnot gave any clue in the stem.CT were tough i couldnot figure out atleast 4 which i remember now.Angiograms were very easy.
Be calm during the exam thats very important its the test of endurance. They will try to confuse you so be clear on concepts. The exam will heavily test you on Pathophysio so keep those facts well understood.Taking breaks is very important.I felt its better to take after every block as it keeps you freshed up.
I felt it was so confusing always keeping two options to confuse in the end.I had 3-4 NBME questions repeated from NBME 7,11,12.I feel i could have corrected it even if i had not done it earlier. No repeats from NBME 13.

Now my 2 cents

Anatomy : Read High Yield gross anatomy and Kaplan.High Yield is a nice book and i loved it but for step 1 i think its not needed. In my exam i did not had any advantage of reading it.
.
Biochemistry : Kaplan is more than sufficient.I had also revised it few days before my exam which helped me.

Physiology : Dr. Kudrath is awesome.....loved his videos.Kaplan is enough

Pathology : I felt RR had way too much info.It wasted two of my months.I felt his audios along with notes are the way to go.After my exam i realised even if i had studied FA Pathology with his audios it was even more than enough.FA path is good.

Pharmacology : Dr. Raymond is excellent.....kaplan more than enough.

Behavior Science : Watched Dr. Daughtry .........Kaplan is enough......Kaplan Qbank questions were also gud in clearing the concepts of patient doctor relation

Micro : Did not do videos..............Kaplan notes were enough

Immuno: Kaplan was awesome........just know it cold no need to panic about this subject

FA : To be very frank FA is very much condensed.......each page of it takes time to learn and you need to have a understanding of the subject beforehand, for which kaplan is best.At last you will have only your annotated FA to study and you will realize its the Bible !!

Kaplan Qbank : Did subject wise 67%.
Kaplan Qbank really helped me in my first read of FA.It will always lead you to some details you had missed while reading FA for the first time.I wished i had done kaplan Qbank twice or even later in my prep coz i felt my exam questions were somewhat similar to kaplan Qbank .

UW : Did random mixed timed mode 68% and then revised wrong questions for the second time.UW WAS THE BANK beyond doubt which i felt was more stronger in building concepts.I also used to write QID of some questions in my FA whose explanation i thought was relevant only when i had read the question stem, this helped me to understand the question style.Regarding taking notes of UW, i would like to say have a read of FA 80% of the details of UW is in FA.You are just wasting your time writing all the stuff.Doing FA thoroughly once will save you from writing all the details.

To get >230 score in NBME you need to correct around 168-170 questions. So they leave you a narrow margin of error. Its the same way in the exam too.yes you will receive very easy stuffs which will comprise around 65% of your test which most of us will answer correct but then there are questions which differentiate a 210 from 230 score, these are the questions which matter the most.
USMLE is a beautiful journey and you need to enjoy it.What i learned is you need to stay calm and composed......you will ace it

I got my score butcould not post due to my hectic rotations..... its 233/84 and am happy with it

I would like to thanks this forum..........best thing which happened to me.All the staff members you have made it a wonderful place with your honest and dedicated service.Kudos to you.
All my old mates thanks to all....... as on i remember usmle2011m,indigo,shyangel,bebix,examtaker,coolato mic,jinni,aknz,doxorubicin,dinosaur18,vaibhavmanu, noothan,zohaib,rulz,shice,mayurs39,step enhancer and above all heman466s.

Congratulations on the great score and thanks for taking the time to share.

Could you elaborate on the statement that the test was harder than UW/Kaplan? If you got a 233, you must have scored over 80%... if your UW score was 68%, then what is it about the real test that was harder?

What i meant with harder version was like hard questions of the both the Qbanks. It was like hard questions pooled up in a single block and then a relatively easier block.
68% was the first time score. You learn from the wrong questions so that when it comes in the exam you can do it.So keep mastering your wrong questions it will help a lot in tackling your weakness

Thanks
For me i felt studying those DVDS and notes at home was perfect. The center prep and online courses are costly and basically they provide you with a computer with DVDs which you have to go to their center and watch. The same thing you can do at your home too.

How many hours during ur internship did u study a day???
3-4 hours
is that why it took 3 months to read material??
yes
I have a book called kap medessentials, have u herd abt it?? is it good???
yes i have seen it in kaplan Qbank.....it was good but i relied on FA as it is Gold standard
do u recommend annotating to ur FA from first readin of kaplan???
What i did was i annotated FA with kaplan qbank and UW.The topics which i felt was to be consulted from kaplan i wrote the page number in FA near that topic. It Saved lots of time and i was able to read the whole stuff
confused... should i study at home with books and videos or shud i go for coachin???
Depends if you are suitable with group study then join coaching.......but i recommend home study with a partner is best,

3-4 hours in the beginning of my prep and then gradually increased as the exam date approached.Hours are not important.I gave my first NBME after i solved my first Qbank.Yes doing subject wise helps incorporate the fact in your mind. But when you do the next question bank do it random mixed timed mode this will train your mind for exam like condition.

Regarding plan i think complete your read with the Qbank along with FA.Keep annotating your FA with relevant explanations from Qbank. After you finish it give an NBME and then see where you stand.Give another read to FA then start your 2nd Qbank. After the Qbank do one more read of FA.Give an NBME see your weakness.Keep doing your wrong questions from the bank.Give NBME see your position. If its fine Go ace the exam

ohk..so how many times should i go over all the kaplan notes? do you say stick to only uworld..or try other qbanks like usmlerx if ur done w/ usmelworld?

how many times in total did you read FA before going to the exam?

so the best predictor of your step score is NBME right more than uworld Self assesment or both are good predictors??

Go over kaplan 2 times it will help.
I did kaplan Qbank first and then UW.I annotated my FA both with Kaplan Qbank and UW and only used to read my FA.I called it my Bible !!

FA i think i did 5 reads.
NBME is undoubtedly the best predictor.
