Post My 2016 Step 1 prep/exp IMG - 256

Hi everyone, it's my 1st time to post here, I've been reading lot of posts since Nov 2015 on this forum before i start my review for step 1, which really helped me a lot. So, i just want to share my step 1 journey to encourage my fellow IMGs, and hope to inspire them too.

I'm an IMG fr. PH, graduated 2014, finished my internship 2015.

Materials: FA 2015 + Uworld only

Study Time: Approximately 4 months (November 2015 - February 2016)

November: First fast read of FA (around 10 days),
then took my NBME 15: 213, and 2nd detailed reading of FA (until end of month)

December-February: Uworld along with FA. I did 1 block a day, and seriously annotate my FA (for e.g. 1 question about AS, I annotate my FA on the page of Valvular diseases and differentiate AS on other valve dse) this is very tedious, and i do that for every question that is why i can only finish 1 block a day. You can just imagine how i tortured my FA flipping all the pages over and over again.

Mid January: took my NBME 16: 241, i was halfway with my Uworld, was lagging behind due to holidays.

February: I finished Uworld + Annotations on Feb 15
Uworld Ave: 77% first pass, i only revise my wrong and marked questions
then took UWSA 1: 247

Remaining Days: I Reread my FA + all annotations I made, unfortunately i wasn't able to read all the topic it was too long! maybe 3-4 chapters left.

3 days before: NBME 17: 256 (felt somehow confident but still a bit doubtful)

The night before i tried to do free 150, but halfway through, i was super tired & fell asleep (please don't do this, do your free 150 earlier! i swear!) get some good sleep before the test.

On the day of the test (March 2): First 2 blocks was so hard, I was panicking and palpitating, after that i had to take a 15 min break to compose my self. I thought ill fail the exam right at that point, but I prayed and continued, then maybe God answered my prayers, the remaining 5 blocks were okay, some questions were easy and straight forward. I guess, what they say is true. There will be tough blocks and there will be easy ones. I was marking 10-12 questions per block.

Final Result last Wednesday: 256, so thrilled & a bit emotional because i was only aiming for 240s. All the hardwork paid off.

If you have any question, feel free to message me, i'm willing to help! Good luck guys!

Hey,thanks!

i would say yes, FA and Uworld is more than enough. The two compliment well with each other. I think its better to learn, understand, simplify, and master a few but substantial material than reading a lot of sources and not having a good grasp to the material at all. I have nothing against other sources, i'm just sharing what worked for me.

I studied FA and Uworld for 4 months, spending 12 hours/day, 6-7 days/week on my last 2 months.

Thanks buddy!, I can only remember marking 10-12 questions on average per block. Im sorry I wasn't able to count all my mistakes on all 7 blocks. What i did after the exam is just checked my FA + annotations or even search the net whenever I remember a question that I wasn't sure. Sometimes my ans. is right, sometimes it is wrong. But the exact # i can't remmber.

Goodluck on your result!

Default Need help on step1

First of all congratulations for achieving your target! I am a new comer here. I just made an account today after I got shocked from NBME 18. I am an IMG, reading for step1 for more than a year though it was on and off. As I am currently living in USA with student visa so I have to maintain my school grade too. So couldn't give 100% on my studies. Still have finished First Aid 2014 twice (not consecutively), and U world twice. And I read Kaplan books (all except anatomy) but it was more than a year ago, i barely can remember anything from there. I am an old graduate. And my aim was was to get 230+ As I am living with my families n they r continously pressurized me to take the test. So I schedule it ( last day of my eligibility period) to take the test on 31st March, yesterday I took NBME 18, which left me devastated, frustrated, distraught , shattered and shocked as I I didn't even touch 200. I m feeling like I should die. I was too panic while I was taking nbme last night. And moreover, I couldn't review all the materials before i sat for nbme. I had to go to school even 2 days before my nbme and had to do home works and took test there. I guess I loose myself now. Its too scary even to think about how to start all over again. I don't have class in Summer (MAY7-AUG Last week) I can do maximize utilize this time to finish this Monster exam.
Now I just don't want to give up as I have already invested so many things for this exam so I want to make it happen. Today I will cancel my exam I know my family will get mad on me but I can just go for the exam for getting 200 or even lower than this.
Please help me what are the materials I should read or how to make a plan to achieve my goal/. I am totally lost and as I have seen or heard exam is getting harder n harder. On 18 NBME, i got everything below avg except Resp n Nervous system.

Thanks a lot. Will be waiting for your reply. I can't start study now as I need to know how to do it. Congratulations once again!

Tanzina

hey thanks!, yes my first read was 10 days, but that was a "fast" read and be familiarised with it, didn't memorize much. I had to do 2nd reading on the rest of the month of November, probably 19 days (much longer bec. I had to memorize concepts now). So basically I've read FA 2015 twice in a month before i moved to Uworld. Then Im reading my FA along with Uworld fr. Dec. - Feb. so its like im holding my FA and flipping my FA almost throughout the 4 months of studying. I just focused on FA and Uworld.

Default What he is saying

He's from the Philippines.
What he is rambling about is this:

Do UW. Then do FA . Then do UW again . And FA .
Having done it twice .You ready to do NBME .

Thats the score you will get in the real exam .

Not happy with NBME score do UW and FA again .

Now you'll get your 240/250.

Use KLN ( The set of 7 books ) as reference to help understand and for completeness on various topics. Its enough on all subjects esp Patho.

KLN - is 30 USD . No other expense is needed.

Keep it simple.

Now go complicate this. When you add something to this ask yourself - am I repeating stuff already included in this plan.

Hey!! Many many congratulations to you! First person I saw who just did FA and uworld and got great scores!
I did the same, felt terrible after the exam and have been blaming myself everyday as to why I chose the road which people don't take. I feel positive now.. Thanks.. Hopefully I get calm and study for CK. Congrats once again!

Default Also an IMG!

I have done about half the kaplan q bank and then I started on pathos and have only been thru it once on fast. I recently started Uworld and am half way done with that but i plan on finishing it all. Im at a 152 right now and was hoping to write my step 1 by the end of August or early September. Any suggestions on study hours or materials? Anything will help thank you!

Default Not using your head

You not watching carefully and you not reading carefully.
You not giving yourself any understanding .
Some of you are lost others have a half baked idea.

Let me give you an eg. And criticise one guy then you'll be able to follow what I mean in the above paragraph .

Take sulty91- in this thread .He says :

Also an IMG!

This guy's thinking is difficult to follow . Where is the plan in what he is saying . He took some points and threw it into the pot and turned the heat on. There is no end point . There is no objective.
He did K q bank - fast then he threw in patho Then he decided to go to another q bank . Now he says - i'm writing in Aug ..

Let me tell you now whats wrong with this . Patho is 60% of work load in step 1 . By doing the K q bank fast - what he gained ? F'all . Then he sees there is quite a bit of patho in that bank so he did patho next .He didn't say what quality of work was done in Patho. From there he dived into the UW q bank . Presumably , he is going to do this fast. But all the concepts and major topics are covered fairly equally in both q banks . Where is the advantages in this approach . Its a pretty confused approach.

Now see my plan . My plan is based on having read many threads here and having collected the hugely important aspects of the step 1 exam . eg Patho Pharmac Physio carry the bulk of the questions . So when referencing the KLN i will do this slowly and correctly . My target is complete UW slowly - first read. My reference book is KLN . Update FA as I go along thru UW. . The first read will take you 3 months or more. Having done that do my second read of UW and FA This will be one month since I did UW thoroughly.
Now If I want to add a second q bank I can do so - I'll run thru it in 2-3 weeks . Its a repeat of UW.

Now you move on to NBME.

We have reached the bottom line in this step 1 preparation.

NBME is everything. This is what step 1 is all about . This is my target.

The score I get here closely reflects what I am going to get in the exam .

NBME is everything . Get your head around this. If you can't you really going to mess up and waste money and time.

If you don't get the score you want then do UW and FA again. Now do another NBME . You should get your score now. If you don't, get a tutor - they are available on this site. He'll guide you till you can follow and realise the right score in NBME.

Once you get the NBME score you want - just once is enough- you ready to write.

Now pay your money and write as soon as possible. While you waiting for exam date stay with UW and FA.

Look at my thinking and now go read what sulty91 wrote.

When you read an important aspect of step 1 and you want to engage with it then let it be part of your plan .

Write out you plan . You can change this as you go along. Don't pay the money until you have got the desired score in NBME .This is important for those who have borrowed to sit this exam.

The guy who started this thread had this as his basic plan.

Good luck .

Default Resources

all the resources are good
They cover the step 1 adequately.
There is little advantage between similar resources.
All q banks will take you there .
All of the popular books videos and live courses will take you there .
There is little advantage between similar resources.
All the resources are really great.

What I feel is important is - don't repeat similar or put similar again and again into your plan.

In the above reply - i chose UW randomly. All o other q banks can be substituted with ease.

In the above reply I choose FA because it forms part of step 1 foundation and is recommended by all agencies.

Go well.

Hi buddy, study hours? i studied on averge 8-10hours on my first 2 months, then 12hours on my last 1 month. I just did
FA 2x, then NBME 15,
Uworld + FA annotations (reading while annotating) then NBME 16,
Repeat FA + annotations on my last 2 weeks.
NBME 17 3 days before the real test

Hope this one simplified my thread. As i said, i can't say on other materials as I do not know the contents. Goodluck!
