Help Quick Microbiology Review

Hi,

I need help for Micro. I am planning on going over Micro and cannot allot more than 3 days to it. I want to go over as much of it as possible from this week Friday all the way to Sunday. I want to take an NBME on Monday (April 30th). My exam is most likely in the first week of June so I have about 5-6 weeks.

A little background on my Micro situation first --> I have read CMMRS a long time ago and don't remember much from it. I have gone over Kaplan Notes about 2 months back in live lectures (so its still a little fresh) and I haven't read FA in a very long time. I don't want to watch videos as reading would be faster.

Now, here are my questions regarding Micro -

1) What book should I use?
-CMMRS
-Kaplan Micro Notes
-FA + Kaplan Qbank (224 questions - about 5 blocks)

2) How long do you think it will take me to finish whatever you chose from above?

3) If I don't have enough time (i.e 3 days) for all of Micro, do you think its better to just go over the HY points?

4) What would you suggest is HY in Micro?

Keeping in mind that my exam is in 5 to 6 weeks from now, What do you suggest?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

What I THINK I should do is go over Micro in FA and do Kaplan Qbank Micro questions. There are about 224 questions i.e almost 5 blocks. In three days I think its doable to finish Micro from FA and about 4 blocks from Qbank. I would use the Qbank as a learning tool.

Thanks for all your advice and suggestions.

I suggest you read it from Kaplan because this is the last time you'll be able to go through micro completely. (It's doable. I just finished reading micro KLN and it took me 6 - 8 hours.) Then, go through only the pictures in CMMRS. CMMRS will only take 10 mins.

You'll be able to go through it in a fast manner because you've memorized everything before already. This read is just for recall. Also, when you read FA + UW notes, it will be tons easier. Since FA only contains keywords, your prior read will give you the context to put those keywords in. I'm estimating FA + UW notes to take, at most, 3 hours.

The qbank questions will only take half a day. Use this only to check which parts didn't really stick, which ones still confuse you, or to familiarize how a certain bug detail will be asked. No need to dwell too much.

That will be 1 day for a full read and 0.5 day for questions.

I don't think you should just go for high yield points. You have DIT for that.

Good luck!!

My humble opinion is:

CMMRS is great! But for this time, read just what you've highlighted before (but I'm not sure you can finish it within 3 days ). If you didn't highlight it, then don't go for it. (Same goes for Kaplan notes)

FA + qbank: sounds more like it. You can read FA microbiology in 1 to 1.5 days and then use the rest of the time for the Qbank (You will have to run Hope2Pass... run!!!)

Don't add stuff you haven't read before (it will slow you down)

HY stuff is almost everything inside those books... hard to tell what to read and what not...

One Q for you... how good/bad do you feel in Micro???

And this is what I call "fast reading"...

Suddenly... my heart has a feeling similar to that of envy

Thanks for the reply!

I have highlighted CMMRS & Kaplan Notes so I will only be going over the highlights as Dr. Mexito suggested.

Also, I am a medium-paced reader. I know my limits and there is no way I can get through ALL of KLN Micro in 6-8 hours I am leaning towards KLN because I have my notes in it and since I went through it in the live lectures recently, it will probably be a faster read.

224 questions in half a day is crazy! haha I can barely get through a block + reviewing of the complete block in about 3-4 hours. Doing 5 blocks of Qbank for the first time will get too tiring and repetitive. I also would like to space them out.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply! CMMRS is a great book. It's an easy read but I feel like I should go over KLN if anything because I have my notes from live lectures in it as well. It might be a faster read because I will only go over the highlighted material and my notes in it.

FA & Qbank is a good option because it will revise all the micro that I learned in the live lectures since its just a matter of recall. Not doing it for the first time. And this will also give me time to do questions ... if not all 5 blocks ..at least 3 blocks which is still a decent number of micro questions.

I am not too bad with Micro. It's not one of my weaknesses. I can usually get the diagnoses right but the micro pharmacology is a bit of a problem for me. I am pretty good overall but its been about 2 months since I've done any micro.

Btw ... here's another suggestion -

I want to start DIT by Tuesday, May 1st. Another member who just finished DIT; drj10, suggested that we should read FA before starting DIT as it will make everything easier.

So thinking in terms of DIT and if you've read my other thread (Exams in 2 months; Study Schedule), then you'd know that right now I am approaching the part of the plan where I have to review all my weak points. Basically I have to do Neuro, Micro, and Some biochem (key enzymes and deficiencies). I have done path, physio, pharm, genetics, immuno, biostats/epi and working on Beh. Sci. now.

So I was thinking if I just go over ALL of FA (cover to cover) in the next 6 days. That will cover all of biochem, neuro and micro. It will be a good recall from the live lectures I took 2 months ago as everything is still kind-of-may-be fresh in my mind.

I can just do FA & Qbank everyday for the next 5-6 days and then take the NBME on April 30th, and start DIT May 1st.

What do you think ?

Or should I still to KLN for micro and neuro and then do biochem after ?

LOL! Micro KLN is in outline form... It only seems like a big book, but there are big spaces in the pages. Also, it's my 2nd read already... In my first reading, micro KLN took me 3 days. I'm sure you'll be able to do the same when you go back to it.

I personally think KLN for neuro is too much to review in a short time. The video (at fast mode) will suffice -- just leave out low-yield topics. Then, neuro FA. For Biochem, I'm not sure. I have yet to go through it. My schedule for biochem is tomorrow.

By the way, I think you'll start DIT a full week ahead of me. I'll just join you at the end of the first week of May.

Ah I see. Well I still have to make a plan for the weak subjects. Now I got confused since I decided to put in Micro in this time as well. Initially I was planning on going over just the viruses but I feel like I should go over all of it!

Also, now the option of going over FA along with Qbank for everything sounds so tempting!! (less resources, less time consuming, reviews everything, plus i have time to do questions).

Still deciding on what to do this week! Neuro tomorrow for sure but dont know what to use for it and Micro as well..

Guys... can you give me some feed-back as you guys do DIT? Please??? I would like to follow your experience with DIT...

Thank you

@d_wiqed Are you done with your modified Taus method? Is that why you are heading for DIT?

Sure! I'll update you with DIT.

Nope. I'm not yet finished with it. My schedule now is to go through all the subjects via modified Taus in 2 weeks. I originally planned of doing it all the way to my exam, but I thought to give DIT a try.

My Taus schedule will end on May 6. I'll do an nbme and then DIT after.

Phase I -- do you mean the basic sciences? My schedule is 1 day micro, 1 day biochem and mol. bio, 0.5 days each for genetics and immuno, a couple of hours for beh. sci., neuro, and embryo. After that, 1 day per system. I've already worked on my weak areas before I went to Taus that's why my time allotment per subject/system is small. I'm using Taus as an integrated run-through of all subjects. I didn't follow the first, second, or third run written there bec. it's too late in my prep.

Mayn, I would suggest (I hope not to late) to go with our method again: get FA, quick scan it and then go to KLN to only read the same FA topics. It will not take too many days but will turn the process into fun thing!
