One final thing... since I'm a little short of time... should I review just the wrong ones in UWSA or just forget about it?

@sukar- How come you extended your eligibility? Well, good luck coz July ain't too far either!! Did you end up taking an NBME ?

@aj23- Good luck on the NBME. Let us know how it goes. I'm planning on taking NBME 11 or 12 next weekend as well!

@moath- If you're weak in Path then you could try listening to Goljan but listen to like 5 hours everyday and then you'll be done in 8 days! No time to read RR now .. you only have 35 days left. You could try pathoma which is only 35 hours of videos and if you watch it at 1.4x, about 8 hours daily, you'll be done in 3 days!

@DefeatTheBeast- When is your exam man? Good luck on the NBME. Hope it goes well.

@Dr.Mexito- Good luck on the UWSA...Are you planning on taking a NBME soon too? When is your exam? And how did the UW second pass go?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

My Update:
-Taking a 2 day break from DIT and doing questions today and tomorrow.
-Hope to get 5-6 blocks done in these two days.
-Starting DIT day 10 on Tuesday and going 5 straight days to finish DIT with day 15 on Saturday.
-NBME 11 or 12 on Sunday...not going to review anything. Just going to take the NBME straight after DIT.
-Starting Monday after the NBME: I'll have 1 month to my exam; Plan is to start with DIT/FA/Questions review for 4-5 days and take [COLOR="DarkRed"]another NBME at the end of that week. And then start DIT all over but hopefully finish it in less than 15 days! (already have another work book printed lol)
-Plan on finishing Kaplan Qbank by June 10th; then start a 2nd pass for 20 days and do as many questions as possible.

@H2Pass & all my friends here:

by the way, i ended up taking an NBME today...... and guess what???? :P

i did NBME 12 and is PASSED IT
its not a great score, but it feels really great coz this is my first time in my life i am passing in an NBME exam....i know it might sound wierd but for me atleast i made it to this point.

I score 390(nbme score) .i.e. 194 (STEP 1 score)

But this is Pre-Dit and am happpy am some where close to 200 lol..
tomorow am gonna start with DIT, and try to finish it ASAP.

and then kick the next nbme

Guys anybody has any good idea on how to use DIT more efficiently??
I have heard its time consuming, but would be great if any 1 could advice me on how to use it the BEST way

thanks guys.
am HAPPPPPPPPIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

I extended it.. Bz end of June was gone. I was too stressed with disturbed/no sleep for a few days.. Plus when I spoke to my parents they said to extend it and take in the beginning of July which gives me a bit more time to study.. Rather than stressing myself. I didn't start DIT yet so end of June wouldnt be good idea. I want to finish it all like how I planned it for June but have the extra one or two week of July to review my FA (weak areas).
I only took that NBME that I told you earlier last week. Didn't take another one yet.. I am going to take another one in the beginning of june.

@Dr. Mexito: Nice buddy! You have a lot of time till your exam to improve! Don't worry about the UW Second pass average! Since you took a break in between its like doing UW twice pretty much! You can easily go up by 20 or even more than 20 points! Good luck!

@sukar: Oh ok, That's good that you extended your date then. Make sure you stick to your schedule and get things done! DIT will definitely help when you start it in June.

@aj23: Man it must be a nice feeling passing your NBME! I'm sure it gave you confidence that you're heading in the right direction and you sound like you're more motivated now! And once you do DIT it will be even better! Good luck man.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Guys I need help. This past week I've been stumped .. I only did 3 days of DIT, and less than 3 blocks of questions I dont know what's going on with me but I feel very burnt out after doing DIT. Also I think its the summer weather kicking in that's distracting me and not wanting to study. I haven't gotten much done this weekend either! I want to finish DIT by the end of this week but I'm scared that I haven't done a lot of questions! What should I do or how should I catch up on questions? I know I can finish DIT, that's not a problem but doing questions along with it is hard!

Do you think I should take a NBME ... RIGHT AFTER I finish DIT? Like the day after .. or should I review FA and do some questions first ? What do you suggest?

Thanks for your comments/ suggestions :sorry:

(I think its one of those days where I'm just feeling down..)

Hi! I know how that feels.. The last few days I thats how it was for me too. By sitting home and stressing abt the fact that its not going fast.. It wont go fast.. I have been stuck home forever now.. Hearing all my friends say "It's such a nice weather you should go out"... It's just the beginning of good weather. It will stay the same for a few months. So start studying hard.. You have a month left.. We all have 1 or 2 months max and then we will be done with this thing.. After that we can go out and enjoy the weather. But do take a break if you really want to for a few hrs and then come back and start studyn. I finally took a few hrs to go to the EDWARDS PARK (Since you are in T. I might now it) and now I am back to start my studying fresh! I am going to catch up on the stuff I didn't do yesterday and do some uworld later tonight.
Try doing a block of questions right after you wake up in the morning.. Before you start DIT. And then do another block later at night or sometime in the middle of DIT when you need a break. That way you will get two blocks/day done. Plus you wont feel like you are stuck doing questions straight.
Don't feel down.. we all have those days... Just plan a post-step1 vacation. It will motivate you to stick to that date and study hard.

@aj: thats a good pre-DIT score. I had 191 pre-DIT and then went up to 219 post-DIT.
my recommendation is do a block of UW every morning + two videos a day. This will take you 4 weeks. But i think its the most efficient way to use DIT.

@Hope2Pass: if you want to take a day after DIT to review, then take the nbme the next day, thats fine. Thats what i did. I went over all 15 day review quizes and went over some forgettables. Dont think it helped that much tbh. This time, my 2nd pass of DIT, im just going to take the nbme the next day, right after finishing DIT.

@H2Pass....I know!!!!! Weather up here in Western NY (where I'm from- about 3h away from T.) is also getting super nice. I bit&ch about the lousy weather all year round, shivering in my room as I study, and it turns out that being indoors studying when EVERYONE is outside BBQing and whatnot, enjoying amusement parks, festivals, beaches, etc IS MUCH MUCH WORSE!!!! I hate this!

But, God willing, this should be our last summer indoors.

You talk about not being able to advance in a weekend...I haven't been able to advance in a whole year. Ilovesummerdays

To resume my step 1 journey:

1st pass 60%
2nd pass 72%

#12 330
USWA 1 480/214 (minus 10 pts... )

I feel good because I've improved... I mean... at least I can say that if that would have been the real thing.... I would have pass step 1 . Now, this still is not the score I'm looking for, so this is how the song goes: Hammer weak areas. I only have the strange feeling... I do not like the way UWSA reports the score... is so vague... I do not know who to trust... #12 (two months' ago report), UW 2nd pass report, or UWSA 1 report... Howeve, they tend to repeat the same topics (with some variations... kind of scary... I feel like standing in the middle of nowhere): BS, physiology, renal and endocrino are the weak points (I'm pretty happy that pathology is one of my highest ones )

Positively speaking... 330/182 to 480/214(204) is some improve in to 45 days... I think is possible to jump another 20 pts to the end of Jun, and the another 20 pts in July :sorry:

Any insight my friends.... you already know that I will be more than thankful with you guys

Hi, Dr. Mexito!

Congrats on the improvement on your UWSA!

I think you should follow uwsa1 report. Nbme 12 is a bit long ago.

Have you checked FB lately? I message you there. LOL! But my message was for before UWSA. Anyway, If you're a bit lost regarding the weak areas, maybe you can do another diagnostic test/assessment test. I did kaplan's diagnostic test before when I was determining my weak areas mid-prep (before nbmes). Maybe you can use usmleconsult scorrelator?? I'm donating my usmleconsult assessment test to you. Hahaha... Alternatively, you can answer all nbmes 1-4 now. They are still good evaluators of your level of knowledge right now.

Yep, definitely work on Physiology. It's about concepts and it's better if you master it early. (Side-note: DIT almost doesn't help with concepts.) Behavioral science - another alternative (or in addition) to the videos is BRS Behavioral science questions. It has 20-30 item questions at every end of the chapter. I used it to work on my beh. sci. Just use the questions. You don't need to read the whole book. For statistics, use UW subject review. It has questions similar to the nbmes. If you need/you're going to use UW subject review, pm/FB me.

Here's my suggested plan:
Weeks before - do nbmes 1-4 and work on your weak areas.
1 week - Read FA (and UW notes)
4 weeks - DIT (2 lectures per day; 1 day off after every 5 days) + 1 block of UW or Kaplan qbank
2 weeks - Review FA + UW notes
Exam

I've been doing DIT lately. DIT will "hammer your weak points". However, I suggest you do it at 2 lectures per day. Revise the topics on the day itself. DIT doesn't cover everything adequately. You need to review extra by yourself after every lecture. Go through all the subjects thoroughly. 3 lectures per day + 1 block of mcqs is very doable but it's tiring and you won't be able to go through everything adequately. (You'll be rushing.) Also, do all 1-4 nbmes before you do DIT. That way you'll know what topics to focus on and what questions they ask.

Good luck!!

Thanks everyone . I did take a break today! I started the day off with doing questions but only finished a block of 30 questions n reviewed it very slowly. Then I decided that I wasn't getting much done so I took a break and now I'm actually refreshed! (Actually more tired than refreshed, ended up playing street hockey haha) But I will start the day fresh tomorrow! New week, new attitude and gonna get this sucker done in a month! Hope to get a good output this week and take the NBME week after

Good luck everyone and thanks for lifting up my spirits!
At least I know, I'm not the only one feeling this way haha

Mid June. When's yours?

I had about the same on my 2nd round.
I remember a half of questions, but try to think through them anyway. The other half I do not remember... And I still get wrong questions that about 17% of folks got right, so I guess its ok.

Good to see well-thought and quality questions after f**ing with dumb unfair questions from Kaplan, weird and wrong questions from UC and picky Rx questions. I am though thinking on taking Rx subscription again anyway... I dunno if I should do it or not...

That chart in the back of KLN will really help for that. Spend 10 minutes every two days drawing both RNA and DNA chart out and it will help.

Viruses is pure memorization, no logic no nothing (except hepatitis, HIV and influenca) that's why it's like less than 5% of our exam (according to Jenkins)

Viruses all together are less than 5% of the exam ?

That means we can expect 16 or less questions out of 322 ? Damn!

Oh well, here's an update to the horrendous weekend (in terms of studying) -

I'm way behind on my schedule coz of this weekend; I didn't get much done and neither did I spend time with my family. I sat there with my books expecting to study but didn't do anything!

Anyways, its gone now so here's my plan moving forward -

Day 10 to Day 15 of Dit - Finish by Sunday (6 days of videos in 6 days! )

Then next week monday and tuesday, I'm thinking of reviewing FA/DIT before I actually take the NBME. Wednesday, May 30th, I'll take my online NBME.

After that I'll have about 25 days till my exam. Plan is to keep doing questions and DIT 2nd pass with FA. What else can I do ? Any suggestions or Ideas ?:sorry:

Nice. I still have to take 7,11, 12 and 13.

I will probably take NBME 11 or 12 .. one of those. But I've been reading that 7 and 11 are more like the exam so I'll save them for later. Probably going to take 12 and then every week I'll take an NBME.

Which one are you taking?

ARGH!
Here is my contribution to this thread.

ADN:

H-1 ------> herpes
H-0 ------> HBV
A-1 ------> adenovirus
P-1 ------> parvovirus
P-8 ------> papilomavirus
P-8 ------> poliomavirus
P-1 ------> poxvirus
y-none

Note: 1011881
1 = linear
0 = circular
8 = supercoiled/incomplete
* 1188 are naked viruses
**remember, parvovirus is an "small" virus, so is the only one with a ssDNA

RNA
(In the same order as in FA)

  • "I Called Pico form Reno to Help me" ---> +RNA Icosahedral, naked virus
Calicivirus, Picornavirus, Reovirus, Hepevirus
(Remember: reovirus is a rabid virus, that's why it is trapped behind bars = only dsRNA virus)

  • "Flavio with a Retro Toga drinking Corona" ---> +RNA Icosahedral, enveloped virus
Flavivirus, Retrovirus, Togavirus and Coronavirus (I know, Coronavirus = helical)

  • "Always Bring Polymerase Or Fail Replication" = we all know this one from FA (negative viruses), but if you add Deltavirus and Coronavirus ----> this will give you all the Helical RNA, plus... Coronavirus is the only +RNA helical (all the rest of the helical viruses are -RNA)

  • "Delta Air lines Boeing 747" -----> RNA circular viruses
Deltavirus, Arenavirus, Bunyavirus

  • "Aereo Boeing Tho Reno" ----> Segmented RNA
Arenavirus + Bunyavirus + Thogavirus = Reoviurs
2 + 3 + 8 = 13
(I know, Reovirus has 10-12 segments, but the point is to remember that this virus is the one with the more segmented RNA)

If you remember it like this... 100% you'll get it right... no matter what they ask or how they ask it... 100% guaranty. They can try to put it as scrambled as possible... if you use this... you can't get it wrong.

Doin Rx along with UW.

is anyone doing Rx too? - I have done 25% of their questions which is about 750 questions, but it still tells me that there is an insufficient data to calculate my score. I think its bullshiet.

Questions are really great for memorizing FA, not for anything else haha. Again I see the same thing as in UC and Kaplan: 65% students answered this correctly (the question is obviously hard and less than a half would answer it imo) or something like - only 20% answered this... (but this would be clearly explained in FA, which I am sure around 50% wcould answer it.)

I think these percentages are randomly set by some dude or a group of dudes.

In UW there are truly realistic percentages of what was answered and by how many students.

========
btw looks like our little thread in here is becoming quite popular according to the number of views =)

I did NBME 1 and 2 offline, both a week apart.
Scores were as follows -

NBME 1 = 147/200 = 74% = 206
NBME 2 = 145/200 = 72.5% = 203

(206 and 203 according to the formula of multiplying NBME offline score by 1.4 to yield a predicted USMLE score. Not sure of how predictive is though)

Anyways, I have 5 days of DIT left, then a thorough review of DIT in 2-3 days and then I take NBME 12 online. I might do NBME 3 or 4 or both of them offline before taking the online NBME.

What do you guys think? I know NBME's 1 and 2 are old but if anyone's done those before, how did you score after doing those ?

am currently doing 2- days DIT back to back (i.e. Day1 & day2), so far have been doing it... So if done this way i will be done with dit by next week.

By the way, i start Dit early morning and 2-days Dit gets over almost 4pm, take a shower, and i review my UW notes the rest of the day, so by the time i finish DIT, i would be some where almost done with revising my UW notes.

and then probably take an nbme in 4-5 days and see where i stand!
hope things go according to the plan, and i dont get distracted

You're getting through 2 days of DIT in 1 day ?! That's awesome. How are you doing it? It takes me a while to go through each video .. work book and quizzes take some time plus I like to take notes in my FA while listening to the videos. Hopefully my second pass of DIT goes by that fast!

i did DIT 2009 before 2 times during my last attmept, that time i had FA byheart in my mind and i have a good photographic memory.
But last time i just knew the things in FA cold but hardly knew any of the concepts behind them.

So now after i did UW, all that made sense and everything is falling into places.
And this Dit 2011 is like the 3rd time am doing it, coz there is only little extra info in this that i need to pay attention and most of the thing i already know coz i did UW thoroughly well

Yeah i know what you mean...their percentiles are complete bs...i mean theres no where in hell every test, every time has an average of 67 percent correct lol...you can average out the questions yourself and that it doesn't come out to 67 percent...im 70 percent done with it...dunno if ill use it more though, time is running short and I'm sticking to a strict schedule...maybe do a block here and there when I'm bored of studying

I am scoring 75-85% on Rx now, I find it good for memorizing FA only and plus I keep this "first time encounter" type o thing.
- I mean I am doing UW for the 3rd time now and most of them questions I remember, so I do not want start forgeting things and fool myself like "oh yea, I know everything" after keep scoring high on UW.

Saw another perfect example in Rx - they describe and diagnose Patau child and ask what chromosome is affected. I guess 80% could chose "13" but according to them, only 39 did...

Guys,

do you think its necessary to do Goljan audios if you're going over Pathoma a 2nd time ? I plan on doing Pathoma 2nd pass after DIT but I don't know if I should do Pathoma or go over Goljan Audios instead ?

What do you suggest ?

I am trying to make the final schedule..
I am going to finish micro/immuno, memorize some of the areas plus some uworld blocks by the 1st of June.
June 2nd will be a catch up/review day.
June 3rd - An NBME.
Can someone help me tell me what's the best way to do DIT+UWORLD from June 4. How many days does it really take?

Good luck sukar! Sounds good. Make sure you stick to your schedule!
DIT takes longggg! If you want to do a block of UW along with it everyday then you can only do 2 lectures per day. For me DIT is taking almost close to 20 days and I was only able to do about 1 block of questions every 2-3 days. But I have been ripping offline NBME's like no tomorrow! (done 3 so far so that obviously took a lot of time!) Also, make sure you go over the work book. That's key!

Good luck.

It depends.
I think the range is:
-anything less than 15 days and your short-cutting.
-more than a month and you lose the whole point of the course (a crammed review)

It took me a little more than 4 weeks. I remember nick saying it took him 4 weeks.

Doing it properly is key, speeding through them and passively watching them won't do any good.
Jenkins recommends 3 weeks (exactly 21 days).

So I've been doing offline NBME's and I'm consistently scoring around 144-150.
Here are my scores from NBME 1,2,3 offline -

May 14th:
NBME 1: 147/200
(offline: 74% = 206)

May 22nd:
NBME 2: 145/200
(offline: 73% = 203)

May 24th:
NBME 3: 144/200
(offline: 72% = 202)
(the first block I did I got 56% n then next three blocks I averaged 74,72,86)

I remember when I did my NBME 3 last year online, I got a score of 190/149 ..I'd say that's a big improvement since then!!!

What do you guys think? I think I'm 70% of the way there, just need to finish DIT, review and then take an online NBME. I'm taking NBME 4 offline in about 4 days. These offline NBME's have definitely helped me raise my confidence level!

I've already made a schedule till for the last 4 weeks of my prep.
I will share it soon! I hope I can score more than 205 on my online NBME. :sorry:

GOOD JOB HOPE2 PASS!!!!!!

I saw your post earlier and it made me curious to see my progress so I took NBME 4 and surprisingly I passed (however I'm not banking on it because it was offline).I'm happy to take it because for the last couple of days I had been debating on reviewing Biochemistry especially molecular. That NBME showed me that I forgot my strongest subject.

Also I don't seem to be improving on my weak area which is Pharmacology. I have no idea how to improve in that area. Its quite depressing actually. Microbiology and Immunology were my other weak areas according to the NBME however I feel like I'm improving but need to spend some time on Fungi and parasites, I seem to confuse them way too much.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Friday: Molecular Biology- Kaplan, Biostats
Saturday:Genetics-Kaplan and RR Chapter
Sunday: Pharmacology and drug withdrawals
Monday: Pharmacology and toxicology
Tuesday:Cancers every organ system and Neoplasia section, Cytokines
Wednesday: Pelvic and Leg anatomy, Fischer 100 cases-skim the harder cases
Thursday: Shocks and Neurology review- demyelination disorders, images
Friday: FA rapid review pages and Cal pages.
Saturday-Sunday: NBME 7/11.
June 3: UWORLD START!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PS. I love this posts I feel like it helps me sort out my progress and it gives me great ideas on how to study. THANKS EVERYONE!!

ok guys my update.

So far been doing DIT reached Day 6

Am kinda thinking of doing DIT from morning till evening 4pm and then switch to my UW notes are read them per subject so that by the time i finish dit will be some where done with my UW notes.

Thought of this plan because doing Dit with 1 block of UW is kinda hectic for me.
So if its just my uw notes thing would move even faster.

Will try my max to finish DIT by next week hopefully. and then read Conrad fisher book with

Doc.Skirovski and Gayathri has recomended
and after that i full review of FA and Pop NBME 11(online)

What do you guys think of this plan??

Your plan looks good man. DIT & UW will definitely make your NBME mark go up. When are you planning on taking it?

First time. Kinda regret leaving it for so late in the game, so the plan right now is to hopefully finish the 1st pass in July and then continue the second pass into August.

I was planning on doing 1 block a day because I'm sure that will take me at least 4 hours. Also I wanted to review KLN, Pathoma and Goljan in the afternoons.

Oh! I thought your exam was in June as well Well then you have time and I think its good you're already starting UW. I'm sure you can finish it in 2 months and do a 2nd pass by August. You're at good pace now so keep it up

Default Micro

Hi guys!
What's the best way to do Micro?
I did half of Bacteriology today (FA + kaplan LN).. Seems like kaplan and FA both have the same stuff.. Should I read kaplan or just put that time towards memorizing FA.
Plus how did everyone memorize all of micro? I am having problems memorizing it
Any suggestions/advices will be great!

I guess the only decent background I have is micro, but anyway, I think FA is just enough

Done with it, final score 89/102 correct questions (I can say that I feel the improvement)

To whom it may concern: it can be done within 6 hrs. (cover to cover + reviewing wrong Qs)

I believe he mentioned 3 hrs to read the book.
I agree with him.. It takes few hrs.. If you are a slow reader like me... May be 5-6hrs.. As long as u put your time to sit and read it doesn't take much time at all.

Yeah it took me a very little time to read it and understand it. Its a well written book and actually engaging so it makes it a quick read.

I'd really love to know is there any reliability/predictability based on so called "simulation" in usmlerx or any other qbank. If u, lets say face more than 2/3 unused questions and u just do 4 blocks straight of it and based on the percentage u sortof predict the score...

All the standard deviations do not really make sense when talking about the score. I mean does not work for me, I set the score I got by the calculation as the upper limit and a range of 20 points below this upper limit.

Do u guys think it has any reliability if we talk about USMLErx in here, which is a qbank based on cold facts from FA?

if i had 20pts for every number ive gotten at this library, id be a 99er by now.
but sadly, the correlation is closer to zero than anything else.

Good job on finishing DIT.
It's such a lag and gets repetitive in the last 5 days of it.

I'm done 11 days so far. As expected, this weekend was horrible for studying. Had so much family dinners/lunches etc going on and I didn't get much time to study. I have till Thursday to finish up DIT, review whatever I can and then take the NBME.

Next update on Thursday after my NBME and then I'll see what to do from that point on wards. I have been following a schedule I made for the last month before my exam but coz of this weekend, I'm already behind!

Good luck to everyone.
